  • Unfortunately I have not been able to get my ES16 unit to play TGC. It will not stay connected long enough to get a shot off.

Make sure you don't have the regular ES16 app open while the TGC interface is open and vice verse. They will interfere with each other.

  • Finally got TGC working . . . Kind of . . . Can't get it to work with my anti-virus software, which is a pain. Then when I do get it on if a ball registers it takes anywhere from 15-30 seconds to show up on the screen. And I can not get a putt to register at all. This was all in the online tournament (ATT-Byron Nelson). I have not tested it in a regular game mode, except hitting a few shots when the tech support guy was helping me get it all connected. Shot delay was pretty long, but not nearly as long as the tournament. Any ideas? Especially putting. It's a 100 percent no go right now.

Should be nowhere that long. Perhaps try rebooting computer and unit.

  • Steve:
I got my unit back and had a chance to take some data. I made sure I calibrated the unit correctly before all this data were taken. I also made certain the unit was parallel with the target line and the target line was pointed directly at the center line in the ES 16 software image projection.

To get the measured and calculated numbers, I place a high speed camera behind the golfer in line with the target line. With this setup one can see how high the ball hits on the screen and where the ball hits in relationship to the center line. Also, it can be determined how long it takes the ball to get to the screen, although this is not the most accurate way to measure ball speed. I find one can only get within about a half frame length.

Most of the numbers, I think, are self explanatory, but in the case of strike positive numbers mean towards the toe or high on the face while negative numbers mean below the sweet spot or towards the heal. In general, negative numbers mean down, closed, left or out to in and positive numbers mean up, open, right or in to out. Most of the ES 16 reported numbers and the measured and calculated data are close. In fact, closer than I would have thought. My swing speed, with driver and some irons, tends to be a bit lower inside then out, so I keep that in mind.

The second 8 iron swing is an example of a misread. I might normally throw that swing out, but did not in this case. The club face of -5.6 degrees, closed, with a 9.6 degrees in to out swing path, that is way off. The reported launch direction was -1.6 degrees while the measured launch direction was 1.7 degrees. Only a 3.3 degree difference, but the spin axis of -23.1 degrees makes that result very suspect. I only got this one while doing this testing. I hope this type of results continue. I used Srixon soft feel golf balls, because it has a bold black logo and a green number and alignment lettering. It seems to me that ball is one the best to produce fewer misreads with the ES 16. I object the this overall, but decided to use it during this testing to see what happened.

Lots of data to digest. Please look it over and let me know if you have questions. The format shown is the best I could get it.
The results here speak well of the ES 16, although given my past experience I need to use it more.

Numbers look good stonebattle, I'm glad the experience is getting better for you.
I bit the bullet Friday and ordered a gc quad.
Can't believe I'm spending so much but I'm excited.
Good luck with the ES16 and hope it starts performing consistently for you

  • I just finished my first TGC round at Protee's Pebble Beach and I have to say it was great, although putting is tough to get use to due to green speed. I was impressed with the ES 16's ability to detect putts. I had one I questioned, but most were right on and in fact the unit often picked up on my tendency to push my putts a degree or two right. Chipping was an issue in that I had to go into putting mode to get soft chips to read, but after I did that, chips were read fairly well. I got 6 misreads and had to rewind when I took a practice swing to close to the ball. Before I sent the unit in it never did that. The unit is much more sensitive now. Some of the club data looks off to me, so I got my P3proswing back from a friend that was using it. One cannot swing on the P3pro and the ES 16 at the same time because they both use IR, but I think I can set them up on opposite sides of the mat and hit alternate shots between the two to see the differences.

    • Steve:
I have not had a chance to swing on a GC Quad, but GC2 with HMT was great and I have to believe the Quad is equal or better.

To provide others some additional objective info, I took 5 swings each on my P3proswing and on my ES 16. I took the first swing on the P3proswing then took the next swing on the ES 16 until all 10 shots were taken. I have to say, the ES 16 results were good. The only area that seemed a bit off was club head speed , it is low. The ES 16 reported an average smash factor of 1.38 for my 8 iron. That smash factor is a bit high, it actually runs more like 1.33. Otherwise the numbers are very good. I would like to know how others are seeing this. Do others have have any objective data they can share.

To me this unit is quite accurate, since I got it back, and it is now good enough for game improvement, because the data is showing me why I am spraying the ball and scoring poorly.

      • Great to hear Stonebattle. New update improving outdoor use is up next. They are also working on horizontal accuracy.

Also... does anyone think a protective case like full metal jacket will even work with es16 due to the extra measurements being taken??

Not sure about a FMJ case unless awisnia wants to design one. I suspect the outdoor update will be out soon. Then the horizontal improvement.

          Bubba:
I don't use my unit outside, so for me the horizontal accuracy consistency would be the area needing improvement the most. I was more than a bit surprised at the test results. I thought I would find more variation in horizontal measurements. But, that is not what happened.

          Lefty:
I have been giving this some thought as well. I suppose a metal frame with openings may work for the front of the unit. For the sides there are materials that are transparent to radar frequencies, so I suppose that type of material would be necessary.

      • Was finally able to play a few holes of TGC. Short chips and putting was still touch and go. Had to hit 5-6 chips to get one to read on shorter chips. Shorter putts I had to hit 2-3 to get them to read. Longer putts were not an issue.

My short putts and chips are pretty good on jnpg. I use a provx which has a louder sound when you chip or putt it. I think that helps.

That's interesting. I'll have to give that a go. Yesterday I was using the MG C4 ball due to its larger logo.

I've played a few holes now in TGC. I find I have to go to putter, but then hit a chip. It reads more often, but I have noticed some issues with launch.
The shot mine misses the most is soft struck L or S wedge with higher launch angles. I still use the Srixon soft feel golf ball. Seems to work well.
Putting works very well in TGC, although once in a while I see a ball go far right, 8 degrees or so. I don't think I am doing that, but could be.

      • Played another round today. It was a bit frustrating in that I had several high path and face angle misread with several clubs and had to rewind. I was not getting many of these when I first got it back, but now I seem to be. See the attached photo. Note the 12 degrees in to out path with a 19 degree closed club face. This is an extreme example of course. Does anyone know why we are getting these types of misreads and how to resolve the issue? I did recalibrate and it seems to be better, but I just recalibrated a couple of days ago, so it would not seem reasonable to have to do it again so soon.

        • I did not a couple of crazy left swings like that as well.

          Comment

          • Well, I carefully recalibrated and hit about 25 shots with several clubs, wedge to driver. All seemed quite reasonable. I'm not sure if I am doing something that would make these strange reading more likely, I mean the unit is just sitting there reading shots and it is not even sitting on the same mat I am hitting off of. The shots that were displayed like the photo above were not hit fat or thin, or off the heal or toe to any significant degree.

Have you noticed if a certain type of shot produced these results?

I have not done enough testing to determine that. I've been outside too much lately.

          • How sturdy is this thing? IE does it need a protective casing?

            Comment

            • It is pretty sturdy, but I did accidentally hit a ball on a practice shot straight into the face of it, knocked it over... it was a 6i 95 mph swing and a 130 ball speed (it still recorded the shot, despite being knocked over).

it still worked after that, but something was loose inside and a got a couple more misreads, so I sent it in.

              Comment

              • Wow, it still worked. Did Ernest Sports tell you what was loose?

                • Anyone have any updates on ES16? I have done some very brief testing as my time is limited during the summer months. I had to uninstall the ES/TGC interface and reinstall it. That got rid of the HUGE delays. TGC was "playable" as far as delay time, which was comparable to my SkyTrak. However, shot shaping seems to be off especially with shots inside of 50 yards. Right now my miss with my irons are a fade that starts on target and fades away from the target. Not sure where that has come from, but it's irritating as all get out, but that's another thread :-).

I did have a couple of those shot shapes, but especially in the ES16 app I saw far more dead left pulls. That shot is a possibility in my game, but not on as regular a basis as I was seeing in the app. I think every shot inside of the 50 yard margin showed as a dead left pull even though I was hitting roughly in the middle of the screen. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the mat (CCE mat) and possibly setup. I generally have a very open chip/pitch setup, but hit the ball relatively straight.

Putts were again an issue. I had 5-6 no-reads on an 8-ft putt and the putt that did end up registering went 5-6 ft by the hole. I had a 16-ft 4in downhill put that took three putts to register.

At this point I'm still pretty disappointed with the unit.

I do gimmies on the green to save my sanity. Putting on a sim does not help my game so I don't do it.

I find a lot of my short shoots being different inside than they would outside, but I think that is because of the mat l turf.

                • Just wondering if anyone has tried the new firmware 1.52?
