OKay, so I know it's a few weeks away yet but Masters week will quickly be upon us. I know we had some debate about course length etc relatively recently and talked about playing majors more like the real thing. Wondering if anyone else is up for playing the Masters at the real length. The pitch and putt version at 6300 just doesn't feel like the monster that place really is. Maybe it's the masochist in me, but I'd love to play that beast similar to real life that if I play my ass off i might be able to break 80. I played a quick practice round around the short one, hit the ball like crap and shot 78. Hit the ball like that on the real course, I don't break 120 and I'm made to look like the donkey I play like. Wondering what everyone else's thoughts are.

Driver-3W-Iron on every Par 4? I'll pass. Have fun though.
the JNPG tour runs a separate event called Playing with the Pros that more closely duplicates the playing conditions and length of the pga tour stop that week.
It's just computer bits. There are LOTS of them available. Setup a second tournament for this type of stuff and make everyone happy.

Thinman I REALLY enjoy the PWTP tournaments over on JNPG. And yes that is certainly a way to help make both sides happy. I have found that on a number of these longer course though it's not the Par 4s that get you. It's those longer par 3s :-). But I do understand both sides of the coin. And on some of those I'm hitting driver-hybrid and still having to chip/pitch onto the green. It's golf, so I don't mind it.

We need to mix it up. We can't simply state that we will only play courses under 6600 yards. As much as it's not fun for some to play a 7000 yard course. It is equally not as appealing for some long hitters to hit driver, wedge on all par 4's and Driver, 7 iron for par 5's. We need to try to mix it up. Sure it is fun to score low. I think that the bulk of the courses that we play are easy compared to their real life counterpart. One of the courses coming up has 3 driveable par 4's. I am sorry but we are not playing anything close to what we see on TV at those lengths. I score way lower on TGC tour due to the fact that the majority of the tour courses are short. We need to challenge ourselves with tough courses on occasion. Otherwise you will get a healthy dose of reality when you play a tough course IRL. I personally don't need to shoot in the 60's to feel that I played a good game. In fact I was disappointed with 68 and 69 on Pinehurst white tees. I had a practice round of 64 earlier. The chance of me shooting a 64 IRL is zero at the moment. Now..... nobody loves playing on the tour more than me. And I understand that it is easier for a long hitter to play a short course compared to a short hitter playing a longer course. But having a sim is not about making you feel good about your golf game. It's about having fun and improving your game. If you don't challenge yourself, you are missing out. I vote for longer versions for majors or at least 3 different lengths. If we don't go 3 different lengths, maybe 3 different pin placements might be fun.
I think that a poll might be in order. We have lots of time to change the course if needed.

In general I agree with you we need a mix. However, 6200-6500 is the normal tees these days in real golf. Just looking at the place I play - Fuzzy zoellers covered bridge and champions pointe - my home course is 6400 yards, some score cards from my office desk pebble beach 6300 yards, pete dye course at French lick, 6700, griffin gate resort - 6200.
these are the tees next to the farthest back or the tees 80 t0 90 percent of the players play.

This is a tough subject. IRL, I usually will not play from a set of tees shorter than 6300 if available..... My 4 courses that I usually play are 6900,6600, 6500,6000. The shortest course is actually the most challenging. I also find that courses 6600-6700 the most enjoyable. The 6900 yard course, I play 2/3 the time from the 6600 yard tees. It depends on the group. At 6900 it plays like a different course.

And why you purchased your sim was to play an imaginary tour? I purchased mine to improve my game , which I have. have fun on the jnpg tour, what channel is that on?

Do not bully, especially not with "how great you are"! You can talk about how well or poorly you think you've done, we will read it with admiration or a sense of "me too". Once you go with "how great you are", that is when some of us start laughing at you. Trust me, "how great you are" does not go well with the great game of golf. We are just having a friendly conversation here, so chill!

Yep, I new course opened up from me about 6 years ago. I was a member the 2nd year and started a men league there. Holy cow, some folks just have to much time on their hands. Some complained who they played with, some complained about the tees we played, some complained about the fee for the money pot.

I'll play either way. I prefer the 6700-7000 courses, but understand we can't always play them. Feeding off an earlier comment, when possible even in the two round tourneys play one long and one short?
Just a suggestion. Again, I'll play what's put in front of me. My long irons and woods need work haha.

Next week's major..... I am pretty sure that we will be playing the ProTee version 6531 yards. For Magnolia.... they have the 6356 and the 6769 ....both ProTee courses. Can we do 2 of the 6356 and one of the 6769.. These two are tested and very accurate and playable. Are there better versions this year? Anyone?

I played the Sunday 7400 yard version of Augusta. It's hard...it's supposed to be, but not unplayable. I just felt like playing Augusta when your hitting 4 iron wedge off almost every par 4 isn't enjoyable and doesn't give that place justice. Is it only protee that can set up leagues. Maybe one or a group of us sets up a tour simulated league so those of us that want to play full length courses, gross can do that and those that want to play with the handicaps and the short courses and do their thing as well.

Duke - I like it... no idea how to set it up but it would be fun to have a play with the pros type tournament that week with the course at full strength.
I played it last night to see just how brutal it was... 83 I think. The elevation changes and green complexes are ridiculous to judge.
Mthunt - any thoughts on additional match plays down the road?

I cringe when I hear the talks about bifurcation. I enjoy the growing group and the "nineteenth hole" atmosphere that this forum provides for those playing the tournaments. The group atmosphere and competition is why I play golf. I think that it should be ok for a few to "vent" occasionally if the courses are too long/short. Keep everything in check. Occasional venting should be ok without "bifurcation" being thrown in there. A mix is the answer. I haven't been around that long, but that is what I've seen so far. Let's try the 3 different lengths for this major. I think it'll be fun.
I average 270 off the tee and play some courses at 7400 yards. It's brutal and I wouldn't enjoy that every week. I couldn't imagine playing it with 210 off the tee though. 6800 is a good yardage for me. If it's shorter than that, I look at it as an opportunity to work on my scoring. 67 on a shorter course is great for confidence.
I vote for 3 different versions for Masters week...

I can see that happening eventually. One net tour and one gross tour. Play either or play both. The current tour is a net tour. Sure, you can see where you stand with your gross score. But points are net points only. I can see how the low handicapper can easily lose interest in our tour. We need to figure out a point system that works for both the high to mid handicapper and the low handicapper. More discussion is needed on this as it would be great if we had the groundwork laid for when TGC2 comes out. ProTee wants the tour to grow and it has and still is. I think that we also need to evolve. We don't want players not playing because of length just as we don't want players not playing because their -6 handicap takes them out of contention. We have to remember that what's great for you or me may not be great for everyone. During this discussion please remember to be courteous and understanding of your fellow golfer's feelings. Every long hitter needs to try and play a round with just 6 iron or less at least once..... I think that I lasted until hole 15.
Maybe we need to start a discussion about where we see this tour going in the future.
