  • TGC Carry vs Recorded Shot Data Carry vs Flightscope Optimizer

I posted this in another thread where i was asking protee to add offline data to the recorded shot data, but thought I should start a new thread since it is a different topic. there is a discrepancy between the carry numbers in the recorded shot data vs what tgc shows. i took screen shots of the tgc shot analysis screen on several shots hit on mthunt's driving range so that i could compare. i know that people have said that flightscope optimizer is not accurate but i threw those numbers in as well. it seems like the higher the back spin, the more carry you get in tgc compared to the results in the recorded shot data. thoughts?

Recorded Shot Data is what your gc2 outputs. TGC carry is altered by elevation, altered boost and other club setting changes and a different algorithm than the GC2. For my set up TGC is a couple of yards longer with irons than the gc2.

These shots were on your driving which I assumed was flat but you would know better. I don't have any boost set in gsx.

I was under the assumption that gc2 carry was ignored and only the measured ball data was used.

In recorded shots, the carry is from the gc2. The range is flat but the greens are raised.

TGC would indeed ignore carry from the gc2, but as mthunt said, TGC has its own algorithm. Going by the wild inaccuracies in the rest of TGC, that algorithm would be very basic. It's supposed to be a feel-good version of golf.

TGC's algorithm is supposed to be based on Flightscope but it varies between different firmwares and different versions of GSX. I don't know why but it does. If you look at recorded shots, the numbers shown are exactly what comes off of the GC2. I use 3.5.1 and the current GSX. IMO, it's close but not dead on. I find the carry longer in TGC than on the Gc2. For me it's super close and consistent. If I hit a stock 9 135 I know I can get 140 out of it but outside I may squeeze to 135. I can handle that. It's like playing in Alberta. When I tried 3.7, it was short. The bottom line is it's super consistent with a gc2

I hit a few shots last night on sfr's range which is flat and compared the carry from the gc2 readout and the carry on the recorded shots website and they did not match. Isn't tgc based on optimal flight?

I agree that tgc and gc2 are very consistent but lately I've been trying to get more spin on my driver bc in tgc they just fall out of the sky when under 2000. I've got an m1 9.5 deg with a stiff kurokage silver tini shaft. To get more spin I cranked up to 10.75 so that i can swing less up on the ball while maintaining a good launch angle. It's good when I hit a fade but when I hit a draw, spin is still too low. I was considering lofting up even more but after noticing the discrepancy between tgc and the recorded shot numbers I'm wondering if the tgc algorithm isn't right about the low spin after all.

TGC has a low spin issue that was addressed in an update. You need to turn it on. To do so, start TGC, turn off server and click settings. Ther s a low spin setting. Turn it on and save it.

I see a "high back spin correction" which is currently set to on. I don't see anything about low spin. Am I missing an update?

How would the data compare with Trackman? I am waiting for the latest Trackman update since I can play TGC beta. I can update my data once the update is out.

Here is a 8 iron..... if you put the data into optimizer, it is off by almost 3% which in my mind is acceptable. Click image for larger version

I thought that my spin was low.....Mthunt assures me that it is ok for a range ball in Alberta. Actually, around here, that will go about 10 yards farther. I might get more spin if I clean my grooves.

A while back, I had the GC2 beside a trackman. Numbers were very close across the board.

I believe that the measured data from the gc2 is as good as it gets for indoor simulation. What I'm questioning is the flight algorithms used by Foresight and TGC. It's been discussed here and on other sites that foresight's algorithm is too generous on low spin drives and I agree with that. mthunt mentioned that TGC's algorithm had a problem with low spin drives but it was corrected with a patch that added the setting "high back spin correction". From what I can tell, it still needs a little work. The recorded shot data carry might actually be the most accurate. I'm trying to get optimal flight installed on my computer to check some numbers but i'm having some problems the installer.

TGC isn't perfect on back or side spin but it's plenty good. I've. Hit 1500 back spin drives outside that stay in the air all day.

Thanks for all of the input. According to trackman data, which I would think is a good as it gets, I should be looking for around 1800 - 1900 rpm of spin on my driver. The TGC algorithm likes more spin, while Foresight likes less. The truth is probably somewhere in between. I think I'll leave it alone for now and try to get outside more. I have bigger problems in my game to be worrying about 10 yards of driver carry.

I see a similar discrepancy on E6. On my GC2 with a low backspin shot ( <1500) the GC2 readout will show a carry distance of 290..... on the E6 range this shows 255-260 .

i see much less of a difference on shots with backspin above 2500.

Now to MtHunts point these low backspin drives are killer on the course, very long andro out ..... however in E6 it seems the low backspin actually penalizes . I see a very similar trend in TGC
