  • TGC 2019 Scramble mode

Let us know how the ideal scramble mode should work in TCG 2019. Rules, gameplay, setup, all the nitty gritty details so we can get an idea of what needs to be done to get this implemented at some point.

    Thank you.

the option for just 2 players to team up and play a round scramble style is huge for me. If my wife and I decide to play pebble, she goes from her tee, I go from mine, we both hit our tee shots, we choose the best positioned ball and we rinse and repeat that for 18 holes. Pretty simple but I'm sure not simple to implement into a game but I hope it happens in this version. Not sure when any of these odd 1 vs 3 combinations would ever come up but the more options we have, the better the game gets.

That is the way my wife and I play together IRL.

In practice, anything is better than nothing, so I would be delighted with just about any form of Scramble.
        Given discussion is invited, here are my suggestions/thought provokers;
        - Ideally be able to choose from any number of players. Is there any reason to limit to 4? I often have 5 people round and it unfortunately means we have to handle that extra person somehow, i'm sure others are the same. (see rdh with similar comments)
        - Each player should be able to play off different tees - enabling beginners, females, seniors to join in the same games as longer hitters.
        - Ability to play team vs team locally. Would it be possible to have a 4 v 4 scramble locally? At the very least 2 v 2 would be fun.
        - For vs matches, strokeplay and matchplay formats, whilst hitting balls between team members in a Texas Scramble way.
        - When choosing which ball to play from, have the ability to cycle through all options and see the shot that faces you, lie, distance to pin etc, then select which ball you want from the options. Game should try to offer them in order of which is likely the best. Pretty much as Keither5150 describes. iskuo too.
        - Any desire for game settings that set the min number of tee shots you can choose from each player. IRL we've played 18 hole vs scramble matches where the rules state that you must use at least x number of tee shots from each player. It brings a tactical element to the game where you have to choose which tee shots to use, so as not to end up in a situation where you have to use someones drive on 18 in order to meet the min tee shots criteria. To have this configurable may allow you to turn it off when you have beginners playing, but to turn it on if you have a full quota of experienced players and want to add a tactical angle to it.

Texas Scramble mode really would be the icing on the cake for TGC2019 - it was the only reason I ever played JNPG.

Scramble mode would be awesome! It's one of the only reasons I purchased the E6 software for new simulator setup in addition to TGC. That's just one of the biggest advantages to E6 software.

When winter comes our group plays every Saturday night. We usually have 8 guys all together & play a 2 man scramble. (Four 2 man teams) Takes about 4-5 hours. But it's a great time & everyone loves it.

So the ability to play at the VERY LEAST up to 8 players locally is key. Having the option of playing 4 vs 4, or 2 vs 2 vs 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3, or 2 vs 2 etc is very important. Also important to be able to deal with odd number of local players as in one 2 man team vs one 3 man team. Basically I would just use how E6 as a template & go from there.

Also as mentioned in above post #18 each player able to chose different tee boxes if needed. Also agree with ability to have stroke or match play but if I had to chose one I vote for stroke play.

All you need to do is allow for up to 8 players (either 2 or 4 man teams), and play it as any real life scramble works... Everybody gets and choose the best shot and play the next shots from that spot. E6 has a great scramble mode!

Oooo. Would love that. Simple local (non-online) play with different tee boxes (so couples can play) would be a lot of fun. Would also be great to play in less time.

We do scrambles now and then on the real courses when the wife and I play with our grandsons. We will also use the grandsons balls at times even though it isn't the best just so they feel they are really a part of the game and not just tagging along, so to us a override on ball choice would be nice.

I would love to see at least a 2 man scramble mode with match play. Use the shot each team wants
We play with another couple every Super Bowl and swap wives, (well kind of).
The men are into it, the women do what they do best, flap their lips between shots, sometimes even when they are hitting!
We used JNPG the last 2 years, as stated above, their scrambles work really well.
IMHO it's the best for when friends come over and playing other people online.

I would also like a scramble mode. While I understand the desire for more than 4 players, that may require HB to implement and out of the realm for Protee to put in. Just a guess on my part.,

how does E6 and JNPG handle choosing the best ball. Do they give u the ability to view each shot from the fairway etc and then cycle thru all of them till u pick one

I know there are cool features of this that others have mentioned and I am sure they have their merit; but for me, just allow me to play with up to four total players and allow the captain (designated) to select the best shot after each stroke and everyone else play their next stroke from there. Simple to say, maybe hard to implement. Thanks for working on this.

I agree with the comments above. This format would be better known as "Better Ball", where the team hits their shots and your team takes the best shot and everybody on team then hits next shot from the last best shot. These better ball tournaments are probably the most common tournaments you see. This allows less good players to play and have fun on a team because they get to hit their shots from a better golfers shot. I would love to see this feature added to TGC 2019. This would allow many new golfers/higher handicap golfers to enjoy and play with a group and have fun, instead of getting very frustrated with multiple bad shots and taking forever to finish a hole. I'm a big fan of adding this feature.

“Better Ball” and “Best Ball” are NOT the appropriate names for a Scramble format. This is a common mistake when describing the Scramble format. In “Better Ball” (2 man teams) “Best Ball” (more than 2 per team) each player plays his own ball through the hole and the team takes the lowest score.

in a Scramble format everyone hits and you select the best shot and continue in that manner through the hole.

Kevin_C You are right. I looked it up. I always thought "Better Ball" was where players hit from teams best shot and "Best Ball" was team players hitting their own ball. Looks like scramble is the correct term for this format. Thanks for setting me straight...lol. Yes, this would be great to have added to TGC 2019.

Better ball, best ball, and four ball are all the same format and can be played with 2 or more players.

Until we get a scramble mode , u can improvise a decent way to play now with more than 4 players or include weaker players. I just did this with 3 couples over the weekend. I set up 3 teams (players), one for each couple, each couple played alternate shot on their own ball. Most times, the guys teed off each hole, so not strictly alypterante shot, but a way to keep things moving. Guys were regular golfers, wife's not. That way, each player isn't hitting a shot each ball also, which speeds things up. Still not fast, nine holes took over 3 hours, but wives were also taking breaks, ha ha. Just throwing it out there.

Is there a reason most of you refer to even number of golfers? I would think with guests or family members it's as likely to have an odd number as an even number.

For me, scramble should work with only 2 players (that's how my wife and I play) up to maybe 8 players. If I play with my wife and grandson that's three of us and I play solo and they play on a team (ie 1 against 2).

We should be able to create all our players and then separately assign them to teams in any combination. IE, Player1, 2 and 5 can be assigned to the "Red" team, Player 3 is his own "Green" team (because he's good), and Player 6 & 7 are assigned to the "Yellow" team, etc.

In actual play, after everyone's hit then show the distance and lie of each team member grouped by teams. A default selection would be nice but not essential. For sure have an easy way to select the desired shot to hit from next, all the info needs to be shown all at once and not cycled through otherwise it is too slow and cumbersome. See all the shots at once and just click on the one you like.

This format also supports "Worst Ball" for any given group, handy if you have really good golfers on a team...they have to play from their worst ball while the weaker teams play from their best ball.

Local and online would be nice.

I don't see why you would need to specify 2v2 or 4v4, or any number really. Just add players to the game, and then assign them to one of how ever many teams you want. JNPG does this through assigning colors to each player. Any players with the same color are on the same team. This way, you could have a 3v2, 2v2v2, 5v2, or whatever you want. I could see why you might have a team number limit because of scorecard and HUD limits. Also agree with the above post that best ball and scramble are very different formats.
