  • Wedges, Chips, and Putts Oh MY!!

Ok I've had a few rounds under my belt now and my biggest complaints are the full wedge shots and putting. I hit the ball very well tonight and still ended up shooting +9 because every green I hit wedge into spun all the way off and I mean insane spin. Is there some sort of adjustment for this? I spin the ball outside but, nothing like this. Also the putting is next to impossible to make one. Once you move the guy depending on the special green flashing things that suppose to tell you something you lose sight of the hole. The chipping I don't mind and actually I would take a 30 foot chip over a 30 foot putt all day in the game.

    Rant over...

I've been trying to duplicate your sand shot issue as well and I can't.. What were the GC2 backspin numbers on that crazy sand shot? I hit some sandshots with 5000 backspin that wouldn't back up like yours on flat greens. Did yours go higher than that?

Js and mm, please post your GC2 firmware. Maybe that is what we're dealing with.

HW your roll out looks more natural. JS and myself are having a "sticky" feel/look of the ball rolling on the green. Like going uphill almost. In JS video he carries the ball about 16yrs and it rolls out about 6. He is hitting into a slightly higher elevated section of the the green then you were so theoretically he should get even more roll( it also looks down hill but not sure about that). His angle of approach on the green is pretty low. Without excessive spin I would expect it to roll more. In the real world his shot would be more in the 45 -carry /55 -roll range. I can't tell what the slope of the green is where he is landing. Looks like he's on the back of the green. Could you try your test from there?

mm, what happens if you hit a PW from 30 yards and land it at 10 yards or so? Same thing? It's funny you mention the word "sticky", in version 2.1 I had a problem with Sticky putts. They would always look like going uphill. They fixed it though and I dont think most people got that version.

Also watching his shot again, its almost a duplication of my second shot. Mine goes 16.4 and his about the same except he has a bit more spin. They both roll about the same amount. Now was his shot downhill? I don't know.

Running firmware 3.7.0.0 - the numbers on gc2 match whats on tgc analysis screen for all shots except putting and the slight rounding of ballpath and launch angle that protee does on all shots - cant see how that could be it.

I hit a bunch of sand shots tonight and can get over 6k spin- but i am hitting them like i do a real bunker shot (out of habit) setup open and cut across it some. probably not representative and getting a lot more spin off the mat vs a real bunker. My video was the only sand shot that had crazy spin but i do get some spin back on most of my tgc green side sand shots.

With 6k spin you can expect that bunker shots will not roll out unless downhill. You may get a bit of backspin for sure. That's normal behavior I think. That other shot though, that was crazy. Hehe

I'm on the same 3.7.0.0 firmware. I haven't had anything like the crazy spin example, just the "sticky". We've been focusing on Pinehurst here. I didn't notice this as much on Westchester but I think I had a few that didn't seem quite right. Spin out of the sand is tough to simulate as you can very it greatly depending on how the shot is played. I do think there should be some spin penalty when hitting out of the rough though. I've had shots spin off the green hitting from the heavy rough. While possible, not going to happen very often.

Already discussing this. It's a great idea so it will be done. Just need to figure how much spin to reduce.

The difference between Pinehurst and Westchester is the theme. pinehurst is the Boreal theme, Westchester is the fall theme. If I remember correctly each theme has its own attributes in regards to course firmness. I think maybe same variation is applied to textures. In this case the Boreal theme has course sand (less spin) and the fall theme has white powder sand (more spin). Can someone test, I am not able to until later this week. You can actually see the pebbles in the sand around the borders in the Boreal theme.

Yeah, I recall this coming up. Maybe 25% for light rough and 50% for heavy? Or if you want to get real fancy use the game displayed penalties for a lie and use that range to reduce spin. I don't know how difficult it would be to use those values at this point since we are ignoring them with the current penalty system. It would make the rough more unpredictable and more realistic I think.

Just to let you know, when we were testing with those penalty ranges we found that it only applied the highest number to the penalty. So there was no variation at that time and all penalty shots were getting hit with the max so they decided to scrap them and just use set penalty numbers. I also would have liked to have those ranges work but if they can't, then the way we have it now is better.

That's a bit of a bummer with the penalties it would cool if we could've used the variance. Anyway, I played a round a Pinehurst again tonight and spin is actually working pretty well. I did a lot of rewind shots and tried to get different spin rates. What I found interesting was things look pretty good until I crossed over the 10K mark on spin. A good example was a 9300 pitch shot. It checked up and gave the slightest hint of backing up and stopped. Pitch shots in the 10500 range would spin back 5-10 yards depending on green slope. I hit one full sand wedge that was 11500 and spun off like a banshee. I don't know that a little over a 1000 more rpm should be causing quite that much back spin. Also, spin does seem a little exaggerated from the sand as well but if that is by design then that is fine with me. All in all the more I play on this the more I'm liking it.

Just wanted to check on others for their thoughts on this for major break in putts:

For putts that have some major break right at the ball, it seems like first of all if the putt actually stops there then the break should not have been that severe in the first place but when you go to putt, the first 3 feet or grid square, seems to really make your ball break off line very early. So when you have a 30 or 40 foot putt the first 3 feet, even with a pile of break, should not be as severe as that and also this is where your putt speed is the highest and should run straighter through the break.

I have seen several now that the first few feet of the putt break too much in the putts that your putt speed needs to be quite high. We all have said that the putt does not take off of the putter at the right speed and seems too slow, however the putts run out nice so end results look ok. Just wonder if the slowness of the ball off the putter could play into the above issue.

Just something to watch for when you are playing those types of putts.
