  • Harbor Shores Golf Club, MI - anyone want to take over for me?

I have the first 9 holes mapped - very detailed. I opened it up in the course designer but I’m lost at this part. Ive realized course designing just isn’t my forte. I spent a lot of time going through and mapping and getting the LIDAR data.

I would love to continue mapping the rest in OSM to the best of my ability. I could have it done by the weekend with everything ready to go and files ready to share.

Anyone want to do the fun part? This course is meant to be for the simulator as well. Would LOVE to beta test for you and give feedback if we want to get it as accurate as possible as far as the course goes.

Please let me know!! This is an amazing Jack Nicholas Course nested on Lake Michigan. Would be great with an autumn base.

    Thanks

Here is the example. Because the "injections" around the roughs are so small the bunkers look complete. I did this for the sand bunkers but skipped the fairway bunker roughs. Sim golf really doesn't penalizes that much and aesthetically not worth the effort imo. Click image for larger version

Of note, I traced around the bunker roughs much larger and actually did that on purpose. If you make them too small they won't show up on the game even though the spline points are there (I learned this the hard way). Think of the designer program using a big fat marker to draw the surfaces when it really needs a fine point pen. For anything super tiny on osm, make your trace bigger.

Anyways here are holes 3,4,5. I'll clean up the water edges, color scheme, and background later.

This must be a real tough course IRL. You it's bad if I'm hitting it in the water when I'm play testing with a keyboard/mouse.

      This looks amazing!!

The locals that come to play are gonna love it.

Course is tough, but if you know your landing spots it’s actually pretty easy. The greens are where you get hurt.

It looks great but it's not that easy of a course. The wind by the lake shore can really wreak havoc with your game. If it was calm sure doable but it's always windy when I go there.

Using the flyovers from harbor shores website to decorate stuff, but would mind doing a tourney addition. Do you know where I could get layouts of stands and scoreboard and I'll add those to the mix? Also if you guys have pin placement info that you could send to me would also be very useful.
Working on it Jtangm04 I'll see if I can locate a program and let you know... You may also be able to find that information at the Kitchen Aide website as they sponsor Senior PGA
    Championship website here: https://www.pga.com/events/senior-pga-championship-2020

Looks good! Elevation is much different in real life. On 6, you should Be more like 50’ above the green and 7 green is like 70’ above the fairway.

The lidar program on hole 6 had a random hill located right in front of the lake on the approach shot but was so steep I thought it was an artifact. I will double check the flyover and will try and raise the fairway a bit on 6 but a 4 story height difference seems too high.

I remember a par 4 with water. Blind tee shot to top of hill. Up hill then down hill?

That’s number 4. It’s a layup to the top of the hill, which slopes back down to the heather/hazard. Then downhill.

Now that I’m thinking about and look at the photo again, it’s only about a half club less down the hill to the green over water. This photo he posted makes sense.

Hole 6 has a false green at the end of the fairway. I did placed a red tee there and it does play 20 feet above the green on the approach.

    • #21
Might be an exaggerated number. Not good at judging those things. But those are some pretty good elevation changes. If the Lidar checks out, then maybes it’s just the way the game portrays it through video. It always looks different in real life.

either way, this is so awesome. I’m very grateful you are doing this.

Hole 8. Tried creating a dune like atmosphere by adding a bunch of scattered bunkers.

calebm1001 does the rough on this hole behave like a waste bunkers?

So sorry I didn’t see this!

Yes, 8 has the wasteland bunkers.

This is crazy! You’re really doing an amazing job. Very impressed.

Yes Jtangm04 - looks about right. Not sure you would call the rough waste bunker, more like very deep penalizing rough in places, and waste bunker in spots, probably very hard to get exactly right. Looks like you've done a good job, have to play it and see

You see it on all three -7 green, 8 tee, 9 tee, but it’s no biggy! Was just curious.

What Wizard of Coz ? you can't miss Lake Michigan from the 8th tee that's for sure, or the 7th green, it's right there. It is definitely ocean-like, if you haven't seen Lake Michigan from that viewpoint, or anywhere along South-East shoreline (where Benton Harbor is located) that's one of the hardest things to describe. It's so big you don't see the other side (not like a lake of any kind you could imagine), and instead more like an ocean... too bad you could not make it look like an ocean there.

      • #24
I think I just remember it on 7 green 8 tee.
I was like this was the big fight over the course being close to lake michigan/ beach/ park. Wow

Well, living fairly close (I'm about 40 miles away now, but once rented a friends house directly on Silver Beach/St. Joseph MI) - it's always a big point how real estate encroaches on Lake Michigan property. It's a protected lake and there are several active groups watching the ecosystem. Recently there was a park south-west of Benton Harbor that was made into a National Park, to make sure it remains protected.

Dude! From a playability standpoint it’s really close. I would just be nitpicking if I gave more feedback outside of hole 16.

the entire left side of the green and down the back is marsh. I hit one over the green and to left and was still able to play but that ball is gone 100%.

other than that, this is harbor shores the golf course!!

As for the other nitpicks let me know. I maxed out the objects I can put on the course but any tweaks I can pull off let me know. Rather gets this as close to possible.

hole #1 - left side of cart path is all tall grass.

In general, and not sure if it’s possible, all bunkers in the fairway have a ring of rough surrounding them.

Other than that I would need a closer eye. I was mainly looking at the course itself.
        Working...
