Touble with xbox controller in designer mode

Finally getting back to completing several courses I started last year. Started up but could not get Xbox controller to work.... since its been a while figure it is something simple. Have looked several times now with no luck, so asking for help.

Here is what I am doing... please help

1. Turn on controller
2. start Program
   1. Note: controller recognized as "Hit A" to proceed is on start
3. Go to unpublished courses (using controller to get there)
4. Once in designer mode, defaults to Mouse/ keypad (see pic).
5. Tried to change in settings no luck

What am I doing wrong?!
