  • DIY option for Uneekor balls

Like many of you, I’ve tried a lot of different things to be able to use premium balls. One that works best is to simply drill out shallow holes (equal to the diameter of the dot). In essence, just removing small circular sections of the cover. In a prov1, the outer core is virtually black, so you don’t even need to add any colour to the holes if you don’t want to.

I de-burred the edges of the holes just to make sure it won’t do any harm to my screen...after about 50 shots with all kinds of clubs I can’t see any damage.

My driver ball speed is around 165...faster guys could have problems, I’m not sure. My 9-iron spin is about 9000 with the new ball, and even with that there’s no noticeable screen damage.

Also didn’t notice any degradation in ball speed on longer clubs....that said I’ll probably use the Bridgestones for tee balls just to limit wear/tear on these ones...at least until I run out of supply.

Anyway here’s a pic of the ball. I just put it in a clamp, marked where I wanted to drill, and then went to town. Took about 5 mins for one ball.

I should also mention...wear safety glasses and don’t go too deep. No idea what’s in the center or some balls and wouldn’t want liquid to get in your eyes. Safety first!

How many sets of holes did you drill

      looks like one

Four sets of three. Used a measuring tape to approximate the distances between sets

With 4 sets are you putting it down in only one direction
id think it wouldn’t ready some shots without at least 5

and even in a short distance of the holes aren’t of equal spacing and depth wouldn’t the ball be off balance

i could see milling it off to just thru the outter shell
but drilling with a standard pointed drill bit seams like it would get a littel deep by the time the Diameter was right

          im just spit balling
          not knocking your procedure

Haven’t got any misreads yet. But ya I generally make sure the dots are visible to the camera before hitting.

You can modify this approach however you want...or choose to ignore completely. Just telling you what I did and how it has worked so far in the spirit of sharing info.

              No I appreciate it
And thank you for your efforts

just trying to get more info before attempting
              to modify

I would think that more of a milling bit with no tapered point

                would offer a shallower hole
but harder to control at the start

this isn’t in any way a lack of appreciation of your efforts or sharing

just an appreciation of the topic and efforts so far applied to it

the more minds and hands on it the better off we will all be

Oh for sure there are ways to improve. This was just my easy way of doing it with the tools I had lying around the house.

I’m going to sacrifice on of my 100s of previous experimenting balls and try it out

                      I’m thinking this is what
shwag33 is perfecting at the moment.

                        Me too
and and I’ll be happy to let him do mine

but it’s great to see so many different options being worked on

                          To those trying this
                          i just had a thought

A forstner bit may be just the ticket for this

That looks like it will cut a cleaner hole than my bit. Would save the de-burring step

Swag33 is working on a Méthod that I don’t think goes all the way thru the white
Just shaves it down enough that the dot areas can be colored black
But are low enough below the surface to not come in contact with the screen

It removes very little material from the ball

Im expecting a test ball in a week or so

Fingers crossed I’d rather pay a guy to do them on a milling machine than do them myself
I’d end up with a drill press and a jig to hold em
I’m just to anal to just punch holes in them

I don't have a dog in this fight since I use a GC2 but I'd think about using urethane bumper paint for cars to color the required dimples applied with an artist fine point paint brush.

Bumper paint is flexible after cured, sticks well and has excellent durability. It usually is applied by first using an adhesion promoter and then the paint itself followed by a clear coat if more gloss is desired.

Years ago when I had a Vector Pro which needed a line I did this before balls like Titleist started coming with alignment lines. It seemed to be durable and didn't transfer to the impact screen. The downside was the paint was fairly expensive but I had some leftover from painting one of the race cars.
