Painting on the dots would be a real chore as they need to be on five or preferably 6 spots on the ball
making it difficult to do in one step
london says he’s getting four sets to work placing the ball in a certain position but my preference is a full 6 set applicable

its possible to paint them but I’d imagine at least 2 application of 3 3 dot sets
to not make a mess of things

Actually it was quite easy by using a outside caliper to hold the ball. The points on the caliper legs allowed me to spin the ball to make a straight line. When I first did it I used a piece of car molding tape to stick the ball to a rod and small curved piece of aluminum. Either way rotating the ball was simple. Dabbing paint into dimples should be even easier.

Sadly just filling dimples isn’t a big enough dot

I tried to marker in some dots but the unit needs dots to be pretty close in size to 7/32

It’s calibrated to read a certain size and pattern

I know your just trying to help and I’m not dissuading it

Just that so many things have al ready been tested out
By me and others that a lot of ideas guys just jumping in have while good , parts of them have already failed
Or proven to be very hard or very time consuming

Your idea may work great but I certainly don’t have the artist skill to scuff measure mark and paint the dot pattern on one ball
        Let alone several dozen

One process improvement I just made is by starting the drilling with the bit on the left just to get a hole started then finishing with but on the right. Makes for a smoother hole. That forstner but looks interesting and might try one if I notice any negatives with my approach.

fyi bit size is 3/16. It ends up with a hole about smaller than standard. I tried a ball with a larger hole, but the edges were too abrasive no matter what I did in terms of trying to smooth them out.

I found 7/32 to be the size 5/32 was one too small
if you look around any sharp flat tip wood bit works nicely the lesser of a taper point the better
i found a few at Home Depot
couldnt find a forstner smaller than 1/4
but it did make a nice hole

i was up early ( Damn cat)

so I did a little testing of my own
I had a theory and sadly it proved out in my eyes

ill post a little info or a lot
        draw your own conclusions

i drilled 3 balls with 6 sets each and used a ball with stickers and a new untouched ball

drilled one all the way through to black

one I shaved off just a hair below the clear

one about 1/2 way through the white

took the balls to a controlled environment
        very very hard
        very very smooth flooring surface
found a nice level spot and made a target
        measured off 36 inches high
and proceeded to drop balls as accurately as possible

im sure by now most of you know what happened next
new ball bounced true every time
        sticker ball bounced true everytime
And to my eye the two shaved balls also bounced true
with only a slight variance in sound

the ball I drilled all the way though to black
sounded and reacted very different and erratic sometime right others left some straight

and I’m only talking about dropping them from a few feet and observing over 16 or 20 inchs
        the space the unit reads

        my thoughts are this
this process will work if the depth of the holes is closely monitored and kept to a bare minimum then blackened in with a sharpie and possibly clear coated

Also of the other few balls I cut most don’t have a black layer under the skin
        titelist pro v does

        srixon z doesn't

i don’t think I’d have any confidence in my ball flight or path
hitting a diy ball done like this
something done in a shop with some reasonable control
        i think has promise

this May to the variance may not mater or even show up
at the speed a ball is struck and launched
But it exist in my testing

Interesting test. I found the same to be true with the larger hole ball I tried but the small hole didn’t bounce as funny. More importantly, if you test to ensure the ball lands on an un-drilled part of the ball, it should bounce fine. Implication: when hitting, need to position the ball such that the club contacts an un-drilled part of the ball first.

            I can see that

            I drilled all six spots

I do in the back of my mind believe that the thinner the shaving
( just deep enough so there’s no ink transfer)

the more accurately the Depth is maintained
the more integrity the shot will have

the diy version will work Just not for me
If I hit a bad one I gotta know it’s me and not have a ready made excuse

I don't think that just the inner cover is reliable enough. If you watch the video of the ball picking up the dots its spotty. I can post a video later.

It is enough to get the ball to read most of the time though.

I believe your on the right track
                shwag33

                limited removal of the cover
                at a consistent depth
blackened in dots ( workable on any ball)

ive been drilling balls all day just to pass time
and it’s very very difficult do do accuracy
without a jig ,a drill press with depth adj
even adding the black with a sharpie is a royal pita

I can get it to work but I’d never be satisfied with the result

Sharpie will rub off on the screen not a ton but you will notice it. So i wouldn't hit those ones unless you don't care about getting a little on it.

Did a couple of playing tests today. Back 9 at Cabot. No misreads and was able to stick it on 16 (which I haven’t been able to do with bridgestones). Tidy 1-over from the tips playing the drilled ball on every shot. Then went to augusta par 3 course. Had no problems until the 8th hole (I think?) where I needed to hit 54 degree wedge for the first time. No matter what I did it kept coming up as 888/222. Then dialed back to PW and it was fine.

Next I went to the range and started experimenting. If I hit directly on a dot, squirrelly stuff started happening (massive sidespin on some shots).

So I guess it is a buyer beware type of thing...if you are willing to put up with the occasional misread and rewind, my DIY solution gives an opportunity to hit some shots with much better spin numbers than the stock ball without a significant investment. Probably not for the guys who need laser precision 100% of the time.

                      Gonna keep tinkering.

these are the same kind of results I saw with the taylormade ball. Wonky side spin on 1 big misread and a few wedges on the range went 888-222... other than that no issues at all. 1 rewind during an 18 hole round is not an issue unless you are in a tournament then tough luck

Some guy on Facebook uneekor group did black nail polish and said it didn't mark the screen up and seemed to last longer than the sticker dots. Has anyone tried to copy that method yet?

I think what he did was different then what others have tried. He painted only INSIDE the dimples. I think that way the paint never touches the club because it’s contained in the dimple.

His pattern wasn’t correct tho, and the dots are smaller then the regular dots because they are only the size of the dimples. The uneekor seems to read them tho anyways.

Wife didn’t have any black nail polish so I haven’t been able to try it myself.

Nail polish does come off, it may last as long as the vinyl dots though. If you've ever seen seen a golf ball compress the club will make contact even if it's just in the dimples. Really the problem with nail polish is it's not that flexible. With the ball compressing that much it eventually separates.

Wedges don’t compress the ball that much though... wedges are Problem not driver.

For sure, but they still compress; the nail polish flexes and eventually comes off.

                        I agree it’s more wedges
But having some experience with paint n epoxy on surfaces that move and flex

Nothing you apply to a shinny urethane surface that hasn’t been scuffled creating a mechanical bond on somehow treated ( softened ) to create a chemical bond
Isn’t going to adhere well, especially dabed on nail polish that’s just to thick and the dots are so small bruising it out is nearly impossible
Hard enough with the clear I apply over the printing
                        Damn near impossible with black

Honestly I’m surprised the cut printed dots hold up as well as they do being applied on top of urethane

I’ll go out on a limb and say that black nail polish won’t or doesn’t hold up with any club for more than 25 or thirty shots with any club and I think I’d be being generious
