  • Cutting through the jargon... What matters?

I am looking to build a bay in my single car garage. I am a high handicapper looking to improve. I love video games as much as anyone, but my goal is to fix my lousy swing. Effectively the space is 12'Wx16'Lx9'4"H. The garage door opener is about 12' off the hitting wall.

It seems like there are plenty of options out there, but I am having an issue cutting through the marketing jargon. The sales sites seem intent on making it worse.

I like the ball metrics, but it seems like they are all measuring the result as a necessary input to the video game. I am using a ball metric launch monitor at the PGA store. It tells me when my shot sucked, but I can't tell if I toed it or opened the face.

It seems to me, fixing the idiot with the stick in his hand is most important. Club face impact point, face angle at impact, club path (horizontal and vertical) seem like the critical feedback elements. Ideally an integrated view to help identify problems with my swing seem technically achievable.

Assuming my budget is 10-15k, what's the launch monitor to help me augment my range lessons with the practice feedback inputs to get better.

I think you would get the most bang for your buck with a device that shows strike location and club metrics. GC2/HMT combo does both and right now they are pretty cheap to purchase.

I'd also suggest a 2 camera setup so you can see what your body is doing. What amazed me the most in my swing was "real" vs "feel". When you can see your take away, position at the top, shoulder rotation, hip slide................

First I saw my swing in slow motion ..........let's just say, it wasn't pretty. I'm not saying by any means I am that much better now, but when it goes wrong I do have a way to see what I'm doing.

GC2/HMT could be a great way to go.

GC2 measures the ball metrics that you are currently seeing with your unit, but then HMT will give you the Club data it sounds like you are after. Going for any of the latest units that show this data is going to eat up too much of your budget, and you want to keep a chunk to make sure you have a decent mat, projector and screen..

The Software can actually be the cheapest part of the whole setup...GSPro with GC2 works great.
