  • How much space behind side curtains for shank protection? Other space questions!

    Hi All,

Long time lurker! Started with a Spornia SPG7 net and their sim screen but moving up to a Sportscreen and Impact screen. Most items ordered; received sport screen today so was doing some layout testing to see where it should be placed. Setup is in the garage.

Question on placement, mostly a question about how much space is idea behind the side curtains for shank protection. Since it's in the garage, the setup will have me hitting with the garage door behind me. Two car garage, so if I offset towards the right, the right side curtain would be against the wall pretty much, so assuming I should still put foam tiles on the wall to help protect it? there will be about a foot closer to the screen where there will be a metal storage shelf behind the curtain, so that will be a risk.

Offsetting to the right I think would allow for the most amount of space for friends to be over so they can be hanging out on the left side. All are righties so left side would be the safest to be. I can always move the mat closer to the right wall so there's even more room to the left, and just adjust sim software to hit offset instead of middle of screen.

Other option is to just be more on the left side of the garage, then there will be plenty of space behind the right curtain, but then less space for folks to hang around waiting for their turn. TBH, it isn't often to have folks over, but that can and probably will change when covid 'slows down'.

Photos are below. pros and cons to both left or right side setup. Think I'm leaning more towards the right side, but concerned about space behind the curtain with the wall and storage shelf.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Rob

I have about a foot between my side curtain and the concrete behind it. I don’t think a ball has ever contacted the concrete. If it has, it wasn’t moving fast enough for the bounce back to be noticeable.

I’m using heavy duty canvas painters drop cloth. I was skeptical at first, but it works perfectly. I’ve considered upgrading to nicer curtains, but it would purely be for aesthetics.

I have a similar issue. What type of drop curtain is best for this purpose. I was thinking of just getting a heavier type of curtain that can run along ceiling rails so I can push them out of the way when not in use. But I also like the idea of just netting but I'm not sure how I would make the netting heavy enough without anchoring to the ground.

I am in a similar situation. I have a two car garage. If oriented from the perspective of a car pulling into the garage, I am in the right bay which means my back as a RH is to an empty bay (wear my idiot friends get drunk). The right side net is only about 6 inches from a the wall. I keep it fairly taught, but never actually had a ball make contact. Typically, shanks just dont have that much velocity compared to a straight shot.

good point of shanks having less velocity. I mounted the sport screen the other night and ended up going on the right side garage bay. I'll have about 5-6" of space between the wall and the curtains on the right side. I'll even go with some of those acoustic foam panels for part of the wall.

What I did notice is when I mounted the screen due to wear the beams and such are, and where I place my hitting mat, I have about 5.5ft from ball to the screen. I'm able to swing driver fine without touching the screen and even the longer orange whip no problem. it just seems close.

how much distance are people usually doing from ball to impact screen?

About 9-10 feet is the norm.
