Hey All - this is a great forum and I am hoping to get some advise from the knowledgeable members here before I start my build. Early on in COVID-19, I decided to build myself a backyard putting green and that has been great. It really gave me the itch to pursue the simulator at home and pulled the trigger on a SkyTrak recently. If this works out, maybe I will upgrade to a GC2 in the long run but I didn’t want to invest too much $ until i know what my space will end up looking like.
I need some advice on where I should put this simulator in my house. I want a full setup, not a take down and put up setup and I want it to be an experience for family and friends. I don’t want to do anything crazy to my house, while I want it to be permanent, I want to take it all with me if I ever move. Depending on cost and if its possible, I would look to raise a ceiling in a second story if needed. I am in the PNW, not too cold and not too hot, but I want to use this all year round.
Below are my options and would love some advice on what would be my best path forward. I also have an indoor cycling setup using Zwift app and smart trainers (Wahoo) that my bike goes on. I’d like to have an option to setup my bike in front of the screen and do my virtual rides in this studio as well.
Option #1: It’s currently our guest bedroom, on the first floor so it has 9’ ceilings but is only about 11x11 of usable space given the closet and doorway. Other consideration is that my kids bedroom is right above, so would need to put some sound paneling on the ceiling at least, shortening it.
Option #2: This is currently my office/man-cave/game room. This room is slightly bigger than Option 1, but it only has 8ft ceilings given its on the second floor. I could maybe look to build up a tray ceiling but I know the attic is pretty tight up there already and assume would cost a good deal of $.
Option #3: The garage is a 22 x 20 total with almost 10’ ceilings, so height should be good other than navigating around the garage door opener. ThisSeems like the most logical space but I dont want to have to take the car out to play. I am fine taking out if we have a party and need more space to stand around, but don’t want to have to do it to make it work. It seems I could dedicate at least 11’ wide and then about 13 - 15’ deep. My thought would be to build a frame a few feet in front of the fridge/hvac, essentially building a hallway behind the simulator allowing to access to the fridge.
One downside is that its not in in the house and finished space, but its perfectly comfortable in there all year round.
Options #4: Build a shed in my backyard and dedicate it to a man-cave/golf shed. This is obviously way more work and expense, but could be exactly what I want it to be. Other than cost, I worry about having to exit the house to access it, but it would eliminate sound issues.
I would love to get some thoughts. I could probably make all these places work with an iPad, net and hitting mat, but I want a whole simulator setup that looks professionally done. Thanks again for reading and any advice on which route you’d go. I am going to be in this house for the next 5-10 years, so moving isn’t an option!
