I only found this forum a few weeks ago, but have been wanting to build a simulator in my house for about 8 years! I have never really had the space (and still don’t for what I really want to build) but with COVID and the amount of time I spend at home, I figured it was time.
I went with the GC2 + FSX 2020 and have TGC 2019 and picked up a 12x9x5 All Sports System SuperBay second hand from a local seller and cut it down to 10’3”x9x3 to fit my space. I got some foam padding for a floor covering and used some leftover SynLawn Precision Putt turf that I had left over from a putting green build in my backyard and a tee strike 4x6 stance and hitting mat. I also put up some blackout curtains (outdoor/waterproof given its in my garage) around the area to help separate it from the rest of the garage and reduce light.
I’m currently using an Optoma EH460ST, it works well and has high lumens but I am probably going to get a different projector, possibly a UST as I am tight on space and it currently sits on the floor close to my feet, so its out of harms way but in the way. The overall area is about 11x15x9’6”, so its tight but doable.
Still left to do:
Remove overhead garage door opener and install a wall mounted Chamberlain RJO20 that I picked up on amazon and either get a floor box for the projector or mount it over head, but my garage door is going to get in the way. I pretty much have to play with the garage door closed, there is a support beam in the ceiling, so the garage door sits about 8’6” above the ground. Good enough for some irons but nothing else with the door open. Would love any ideas that others have to work around this support beam/garage door? I have hit the support beam once with my driver, it was a really bad swing that I came up on and finished really high, so I will probably install some padding up there just in case it happens again so I can protect my club! If I could solve the problem of the beam, I may go as far to frame out this area of my garage and make it a completely separated room with HVAC, etc.
I would love some ideas on how to take this thing to the next level in V2. I think its very sufficient for practice and what I am doing in there - but I would love to make it feel like its not in the garage or at least forget that I am in the garage.
