  • Ryder Cup Vote

Gentlemen, a question has come about the possibility of delaying our Ryder Cup. The issue is that many of us will be traveling during the holiday period. So, there is a proposal to delay the Ryder Cup and play two 2 round tournaments during the period (22 Dec - 4 Jan). This would also allow time for additional players to join the tour as word starts to spread. So, what say you?

Please chime in here and let us know your thoughts and preferences.

I think a delay makes sense. I will be out of town a few days and even the days I will be home it would be difficult to match up due to guests coming and going from our house. Just a very busy time of the year for us.

A delay wouldn't hurt us, plus it would give us more Time to solidify the teams. Ultimately whatever the Captain's come up with is good by me.

I'm good for the delay. Just want to get plenty of participants. More players the better this event will be!

MrHogan, I'm thinking they will setup a match, and then the players can play their round at different times (different timezones). I'm sure it would be great if we could somehow coordinate with our match players and agree on a tee time that would work for everyone in the group. But again, if not, then you can play your round at a different time.

It does give an edge to the player who is playing after the other. Knowing a par is good is a huge edge. Matchplay is man v man and not just comparing scores afterwards. I kinda agree with hogan.

At the very least, the other score needs to be hidden.

Do you over seas guys watch any of the other majors when they are on television? I mean do you wake up at odd hours to watch the US Open, Masters, PGA? I find myself setting my alarm clock for 3 or 4 in the morning so I can watch a few hours of the British Open.

The point I am getting at, is that we can make the match ups work IF we want to. I can and will play my rounds at odd hours in order to play in true match play fashion.

I agree with Hogan's suggestion that IF the folks paired against each other are not able to play their matches together the first players score should be hidden. Perhaps we could require the captains watch the first players match and record the score and keep it hidden from everyone until the second players score is posted. For matches that are not able to play at the same time would it be possible to send an invite to both captains and each player? For example, lets say Hogan and I are matched against each other and can not play at the same time, could you send an invite to me and the two captains and a separate invite with the exact same course conditions to Hogan and the captains? Then our scores would be hidden but able to be verified? We could input them on the ************** web site after the second player finished his round.

Interesting banter....I thought the whole idea of match play is head to head competition with 18 (maybe) stress filled mini matches. The strategy is dynamic and changes with each hole. If you can not see your opponent and adjust on the fly what is the point of match play?

Its actually easier to watch US golf from the UK as we're home from work when their teeing off. I might have to stay up until 12:30am for the masters, I watch the pga tour every week whereas I dont get to see much of the european tour.

Playing at the same time is kinda essential in matchplay forcing your opponent to hit a 230 yard shot over water rather than playing old man par which is what is usually required to win tournaments.

If we're not playing over the holiday season then i dont think it will be feasible to play all matches in true matchplay, so we'll need to come up with someway of making it work. Maybe we have to alternate who plays the 1st round first to level it? I dont know, smarter minds than me will have to chew this over.
