I have done some practicing, trying to set up to the ball with a little bit of side-bend as you suggested, and did notice a pretty big improvement with strike. Hitting lots of sweet-spots, and hitting alot fewer fat shots. However it does seem to make me push a fair number of shots way to the right.
I think I am actually swaying my hips more to the right than I used to, as it feels a little strange to me to set-up with the slight side-bend. I feel like I am trying to straighten back up during the backswing and swaying my hips to the right to do that. I think with more practice I will figure it out.
