Hello everyone! After a number of years away from golf, I've started playing again and already got addicted. After doing quite a bit of research, I've decided to build a sim room based on the "Builds by Maz" Youtube plans (I'm on a bit of a budget and like building things).
Since I've never done this, I would REALLY appreciate some advice from y'all.
My room has some limitations. I have a 14'x14' square room with a 9'7" ceiling that has some limitations - mainly that it's not 15+ feet. LOL. See pic attached.
The good news is that the opening of the pocket doors on the "south" side of the room is 8.5 feet high and leads into the living room So if the screen is placed on the "north" side of the room, it makes the room a bit longer for purposes of the backswing. As such, that's the way I'm planning to lay out the sim - unless y'all explain a better way to lay it out.
I'm only 5'5", so I can stand 10.5 feet from the "north" wall and not hit my driver on the top of the pocket door opening. But I'd like taller friends to be able to play, as well. So realistically, it seems I'm going to need to place the ball no more than 9.5 feet from the "north" wall. Probably 9 feet.
Which means taller players are gonna be - at most - 8-8.5 feet from the screen after adding a foot between the screen and wall.
My current plan is to build a 10'x8' enclosure placed 6" off the "east" wall where the windows are. That puts the middle of the enclosure in a spot that (for right handers) allows the additional room in the pocket door opening to benefit the golfer. Adding 3-4" for piping, that would put the "west" edge of the enclosure a little more than 3 feet from the "west" wall of the room. Which is enough room to walk in and out of the arch/doorway. Although the depth of the enclosure and how far it sticks out could make that 3 feet feel kinda tight.
I was initially planning to make the depth of the enclosure 5' (that's how Maz did it), but that's really gonna have it sticking out in the room relative to going in and out of that arch/doorway (it's right at 5 feet from the "north" wall to the "south" edge of the arch/doorway, so a 5 foot enclosure depth would be a foot past the "south" edge of the arch/doorway). On the forums I've seen that some people have done 3' or 4' depth enclosures. If I did a 3' depth, I could add a curtain or net along both sides (retractable) and the ceiling for another 3-4 feet, if need be.
Ordered a Square Golf Launch Monitor already. Figured I can play it using the stick it comes with on my TV until I get the screen/enclosure set up.
I had been planning to do a projector around $400-$600, but I found an Open Box BenQ LU951ST for $799 shipped. Laser, 5000 lms, WUXGA Short Throw. Throw Ratio 0.81 ~ 0.89, Zoom Ratio 1.1x, Keystone Adjustment Vertical ± 30 degrees; Horizontal ± 30 degrees, Lens Shift Vertical: -60%~ +60% Horizontal : -23%~ +23% Looked at the reviews and ordered it.
So my questions are:
1: Does my plan make sense?
2: Is there a better way to design the room layout that I'm not seeing?
3: What enclosure depth would be sufficient? If I could safely do 3' depth, I would.
4: Assuming a ceiling mount for the projector, I obviously don't want anyone to hit the projector with their clubs. At 4x3 Aspect Ratio, it's gonna need to be about 10 feet from the screen. At 16x10, it would need to be about 8.5 feet. Given that I don't have a really high ceiling... and given my screen size... would you go with 16x10 or 4x3 aspect ratio? And if it's going to be just above the ball, should I mount the projector offset a bit and use keystone correction?
