  • Avoiding shadows - must I use a short throw projector?

Just joined this great forum. Huge wealth of information here.

Currently in Lockdown here in the UK, and browsing, whilst missing golf, discovered the quality and reasonable cost of home practice equipment, initially thinking about a net in the garden but soon discovering the simulation software and quality of the graphics that is now available I began dreaming of building an indoor simulator in my double garage, moving the car out when I want to practice and rolling up the screen and pushing back the side curtains to return the garage to its normal use afterwards.

i have most of the equipment and ideas to install ready in my mind, but some technicalities elude me so I am missing some answers.

Found a couple of reasonably priced projectors, with the help of Projector Central. The better one, Epsom EH TW650 needs 4m throw distance, for my planned 4m wide screen. My screen image dimensions in inches are going to be 160 wide by 90 high, ie screen gross size will be 4m x 3m. The Epson seems a much better HD projector but I am worried that at 4m, or 160” back, there will be player shadows on the screen image.

However, I am sure, given the increased cost, that not all simulator builds involve short throw projectors

The other option is an Acer H6517ST, short throw which needs only 2m or 80” back from the screen and could be sighted over the tee position, to be out of the way of a right handed persons golf swing.

Any thoughts or advice on projectors for this set up. If I am stuck with a short throw model, my choice is much more limited and prices are likely to be higher.

5m deep garage. Ceiling height to be increased to 9’ 6” to 10’ - currently in discussion with my carpenter friend. Screen will be Archery Netting initially to limit costs, WGT played via iPad, again, initially, to save building a gaming PC, but intent I would be to purchase TGC 2019, and I will be purchasing a SkyTrak when they come back in to stock.

Another question I have is whether I can play WGT in HD 1920x1080 via a projector such as those mentioned above, when run from an iPad, as this is above the screen resolution of the iPad? Not quite sure if outputting this resolution from an iPad via an HDMI to Lightening adapter into the projector is possible?

Many thanks and apologies for the long winded post, explaining my ideas, probably only necessary as it is my first post

    Keep safe!
