  • Flightscope Mevo+ with Almost Golf Balls! Yep! :)

Enough viewers were begging so I had to do it. What do you think?

If it's not giving the same data as a real ball, I'm not sure what the point is.

Thanks for taking the time to test it, though.

I'd guess if someone was concerned about the noise level of a driver and didn't need to know distance, but was working on direction that would be an option, other than that, I agree using this with the Mevo+, while reading the ball, not overly helpful if trying to dial in distance

I wonder if there is a way to program the LM to output the distance as 133% higher (or thereabouts) to output similar numbers to a real golf ball.

That's fair. I guess I hadn't considered noise to be much of a factor.

I also hadn't considered working on factors like dispersion, AOA and CHS with driver while not paying much attention to distance. That, to me, would be a worthwhile reason to use these if noise or screen durability were a concern.

That was one subscribers EXACT reason. They are in a small apartment and can't make noise but want to use a net and iPad with Mevo+ even if distances are short they get to see the flight.

Thanks for posting these videos! If the wedges and some of the irons are close in distance to regular golf balls, wouldn't it be wise to use them for those shots? I'd imagine that these would be much easier on the screens and extend the life compared to real golf balls.

its an option in my opinion. i will use them when i have a late night practice and want to keep noise down.

        Hi all,

I have been using "almost golf" balls for years in my backyard. I also tried them on the simulator using mevo+. They generally work very good, especially if you put on a metallic dot. Just as in the videos they do not go the whole distance on longer shots. In real life they are shorter because of the reduced smash factor and because of them being lighter - hence more affected by air resistance (force/mass/accelaration). Given that with a limited ball flight (9-15 feet) in sim play, air resistance doesn't come into play that much, so it is mainly down to smash factor.

If I wanted to use almost golf balls for simulator play and get the right distances I would do the following:

mevo+ seperates between wood/iron/wedge shots. The TGC2019 interface gives you the ability to adjust boost along the pretty much same categories.. So I would check the difference in smash factor for all clubs used in sim play and adjust the boost accordingly. So if on average I have a smash factor with a driver of 1.42 with regular balls and 1.20 with "almost" balls, I'd adjust the boost accordingly. Maybe one needs to set up the 9 iron as pitching wedge in mevo+ to get the right boost (ore vice versa), but that is down to people experimenting and looking into it in more detail.

My rough guess from experience with almost golf balls:

        Woods: +20-30% boost
        Irons: +10-20% boost
        Wedges: +0-10% boost

I am pretty sure that one can get to a very reasonable approximation that way.

And one more thing: given that a metallic sticker should be on the ball and oriented towards the screnn at impact, "almost" balls deform quite quickly as they are always compressed in one direction.

Maybe someone has time and enthusiasm to try this to figure out a good setting for "almost" balls.

Almost golf balls are good but certainly don't give the same ball launch amounts. We used them in the past and was great for sims that could allow boost option to mimick a real ball flight. They are easier on your impact screen and less noisy at night. I question whether they are bad for your swing as they do feel different than a real ball. Having said that, I used them years ago and I don't think they hurt me golf game.

Hey all, new to the forum (and the world of golf sims). We bought a Mevo+ for our gym/arcade space at work and are in the process of getting our setup dialed in.

Having the option of hitting foam balls would be very helpful, but so far I haven't been able to get any kind of result with foam. I used the metallic dots. Our ball flight distance is about 9' and the Mevo is sitting at 8' and 12*.

            Any advice?

Ive tried the almost golf balls with my Mevo+ and short irons its not too bad. but they dont work when you go to longer irons. Good for swing practice but numbers way off for me

Sounds like I need to get AGB specifically. I just used generic foam balls from the store.

Just to clarify, our primary use is real golf balls. But we will have people using our sim (since it's at work) that are not avid golfers and run the risk of doing some serious damage with a real ball!

Cool! yea try the Almost Golf ball, they are the most realistic foam balls on the market from what i have read and researched. I had to get the from Australia and shipped to the UK as couldn't find them anywhere
