  • Flightscope Recommended Portable Power bank for Mevo+

In case any of you have been looking at options, Flightscope has recommended this solar powered battery bank:

Click image for larger version Name:	Solar%20Charger%20with%20Mevo+.jpg Views:	0 Size:	100.8 KB ID:	269350

It can be purchased directly through FS on the flightscopemevo site if interested. Would have to hit the pre-order Mevo+ button and it will show up as one of the add ons. Then remove the Mevo+ unit if all you're interested in is the bank. I'm considering it since apparently the device is pretty sensitive to what you use and having this come from FS should lighten any liability on my end.

Found this one on amazon. Was hoping someone could chime in if it’s the same.

Probably very similar but at least the solar cells look to be a little different.

Just make sure it is 5v and 2.4 amp and you will be fine.

Thx man. Are you sure 2.1A isn't enough? I have a few 2.1A, and the one that looks like the FS recommended one is also 2.1A.

I had read a couple places 2.4a is what Flightscope recommended. I cannot say that 2.1a will work or not work. It seems the electrical system on these units is very particular in its needs. So I would suggest calling or asking flightscope for the answer.

Flightscope reps were provided with 2.4a units to use. Flightscope is selling a 2.1a version. So I am guess that both will work.

In reality, it shouldn't be this easy to mess up the unit and have 10 different warnings on how to plug it in.

Thanks Knickerbocker . Agreed, shouldn't be this easy to mess one up.

I was told by a support rep at FlightScope that the power delivery range for Mevo+ is between 2.1A and 2.5A. Transcript from online chat at bottom of this post.

I find it rather unsettling that they are requiring such a specific range, as this points to design flaws in the charging and power circuitry in the unit. If more or less available power risks damaging the battery or power control board, then the charging and power control are inadequately designed/protected. I would like to see an official response from FlightScope on this matter, but I doubt we will hear anything.

Did they/do they have similar issues with previous products?

I removed the link to the recommended power supply in case they change their product recommendation. I don't want to contribute to someone frying their device.

            Chat transcript:
[Me] I also had a question about the charging cable that comes with the unit. I've heard of issues using other micro-usb cables and it causing the charging circuit to overload. People say that they've been told that the cable that ships with the unit is not a standard micro-usb. Is there schematic available?
[Support Rep] The charge cable is a standard micro USB, however it is very short. Based on testing by our development team, the cable and charging adapter will deliver the appropriate charge to the device. We do not recommend using any kind of USB extension cable as these are generally made for data only and do not carry the same charge end to end.
[Support Rep] If you need something longer, I can provide a link to an alternative that we have found to deliver sufficient charge.
[Me] yes, that would be great
[Support Rep] This is one example from Amazon:
[Support Rep] link to raspberry pi power supply
            [Me] ok, perfect, thanks
[Support Rep] The recommended power delivery range for the Mevo+ is between 2.1A and 2.5A. Any more or less, and there is a chance of damaging either the battery or the power control board.
[Support Rep] We are also planning on putting a portable charging battery that will deliver the appropriate amperage on our site, so please keep an eye out for that if you are interested.
            [Me] will do, thanks

So in theory, getting a USB amp meter to monitor the output to the Mevo+ should keep things safe.

The Flightscope branded Anker battery isn't available in europe.
Talked to the european support, they told me that any battery back that delivers 5V and minimum 2.1A is fine by them.
