  • mevo+ 35-45 yard pitch spin axis on TGC2019 - help from Uneekor & GC2 users

    Hi everyone,

I have an issue with short pitches on mevo+ and TGC2019. I am wondering if anyone can help out (disclaimer: I am on firmware beta 0.09):

I did some minor re-builds today and then started to play on my pitching arena (mainly pitches between 20 & 50 yards). At some point the pitches seemed to draw and fade massively. I then started to look at the spin axis numbers and got very high values (between 20 and 35 degrees). Not on every shot, but very often. To me it seems that such high side spin is almost impossible on such shots. I then hit around 40 shots with the target 45 yards away and saw the side spin issue again and again (metallic dot on ball, tried 7 feet & 8 feet from mevo+ to ball, unit well aligned). So a few questions:

    1. For those with a device that measures spin axis reliably (GC2, Uneekor, ...):
1.a.) What is the range of spin axis (side spin) that you get with a 35-45 yard (carry) pitch?
1.b.) What is the maximum spin axis (side spin) that you get if you really try to hook/fade a 40-45 yard pitch (not that one would need that shot in real life )?

    2. I then tried a few shots on FS Skills and always saw a spin axis of less than 3 degrees. So I am wondering if it is a software bug on TGC2019.

    3. I hit a few 8 irons to see if there was an environmental issue, but they all looked fine with very reasonable side spin (as I would expect from impact)

    4. I intentionally tried to hook some of those pitches in TGC 2019 and got very strange results - to say the least: most of those shots registered as a fade, which leads me to think that mevo+ does not measure side spin with the ball but calculates it from club path. Any insights on that?

I would be thankful for any help & information.

    Thanks

I will give it a try. I am on beta 0.09 also. I don’t remember seeing any odd SA when I was pitching with 25 yards carry.
Can you get short chips to register? Say about 8 ft.

I don't remember NOT beeing able to do short chips. But when I get to the simulator again (might be a few days), I'll try to confirm.

The spin axis shown in each software is sent by the Mevo+. TGC 2019 software doesn’t generate the spin axis number as it is sent by Mevo+. Now perhaps there can be a bug in the firmware/interface to display the wrong number in whatever software you are using. My GC2 , SkyTrak and ES16 all have high and low spin axis numbers with pitches depending on how much I try to shape them.

Thanks for the input. I am just wondering what the range of side spin is in pitches. I do not believe that 25 degrees and above is a spin axis number that is reasonable for a 40 yard pitch if one just wants a straight pitch. I don't even know if a spin axis of 25 degrees is achievable on a 40 yard pitch (that is not completely mishit).

40 yard pitches can have a high SA. I use a shot for 35-70 yard pitches where I swing outside in quite aggressively. Add a open face to the shot...and you will get a whole bunch of SA. I had a GC2 for about a year and those shots usually saw about 20-30 degrees of SA. On short pitches, you will not notice a whole lot of shape to the shot.....even if it has high SA. If your club path is fairly square.... your SA should be less than 10 degrees SA.

I tried these pitch shots from 20 yards thru to 45 yards and had no issue with spin access or side spin. I hit about 20 shots. They were mostly around 0 or on either side of that. If I tried to produce side spin it would read as such but nothing that would alarm me. It seemed fine. Sorry, not much help.

I get around 20 degrees hook spin with my GC2 on pitch shots. My HMT shows that I tend to swing in to out about 10 degrees with a pretty square club face. It’s caused by taking it back inside and then dropping it farther under. I can get close to zero if I try but that’s just how I have done it for a long time. If you are getting consistent hook or side spin, I would try to video your swing. If you are getting extreme spin both directions though, I would be more concerned about a hardware issue

Dear all, thanks for the input. I just wanted to know if it was me or the unit (not beeing set up precicely enough). And I now think it is the latter. Thanks.
