  • Mevo+ optimum depth and interference questions

Hey guys, I have just got wife approval for a garage golf sim - happy days!

Now, my hitting space is 11' wide and 20.5' feet deep.

My budget will allow for a 1080p projector and PC with a gaming graphics card and for the launch monitor I am trying to choose between the Skytrak and Mevo+. I guess im leaning towards mevo+ if I have the space - as it 'seems' like its more accurate based on various videos I have seen on youtube. I plan to use the unit 90% indoors however the abillity to take it to the range as well could be a big help. At my club our range doesnt have the length for drivers - however we have a practice net I could hit into from 15-20 feet away no problem.

A couple of questions if I could guys, any answers much appreciated -

    1. Is there a big difference in accuracy of the unit between the indoor setup and short indoor setup - is this where the difference is made for short chips and putting? I could just manage the indoor requirements however the unit would be just in front of the garage door, which is constructed of aluminum panels - could this cause interference with the unit?

    2. Would a ceiling mounted projector interfere with the unit if it was 6' or so in front of it, but on the roof. Im assuming this is how most folks have it?

Im getting close to pulling the trigger on this so again any advice for those using the units would be a huge help!

i'm a recent entry into the home sim world - originally intended kind of on a whim for my kid to hit balls year round. so, i didn't want to invest too much if it ended up not working (or being used) in my space. so, mevo+ seemed like the best value to me - i liked that lefties and righties could hit without moving unit, that it is really good outside, and that it comes with 5 ios courses for free. i started this whole process just before the pandemic, so some of the tech stuff was easier and cheaper to get (refurb projector was ~$500 and got a cheap PC with a decent GPU for ~$500; mevo+ took about 3 1/2 months, tho). Actually used r-motion while waiting for mevo+ as another test to see if sim golf would work/be fun for the fam.

Not at all disappointed with mevo+; HLA, VLA, ball/club speed, etc all great indoors. well hit shots go where they're supposed to; same with fat shots...back spin was prob a bit too high with driver - raised unit 1/4" over the hitting surface and it seems much more realistic (haven't brought to driving range, so just guessing by looking at carry distances, tho...). side spin may never be as good as the camera systems, so I accept that. All signs point to flightscope continually improving their products, so there's always hope.

i have projector mounted on ceiling a couple of feet in front of mevo without any trouble that i can tell. i have projector on eco mode, so it is very quiet. a loud fan in projector might be a problem; however, i have a pretty loud window A/C unit running about 10 ft to the right without noticeable interference. Not sure about the garage door since my set up is on 3rd floor of house, but there seem to be work arounds for garage doors, i think. could always reach out to flightscope prior to purchase?

regular indoor setup is impractical for most since it requires 13' (i think) of ball flight. i'm at 11', lots of people report success with 9-10'. i don't think short indoor vs indoor has anything to do with short chips and putting - just how much ball flight the unit tracks, but i could be wrong. chipping and putting has been surprisingly good once i got a flat surface from mevo to screen - maybe once per round it misses a putt. the most frequent weirdness that i encounter is on soft high chips like with a 60 degree - unpredictably gives super high VLA and often too much distance. i figured unit is getting confused with club and ball, but not sure what the issue is...i just try to keep chips lower - more bump and run style and that works much better. only flop when absolutely necessary, which is probably the way to do it in real life as well!

good luck - i'm having tons of fun and playing more golf than i have in years!

The projector should not get in the way if it is centred although I am not sure you noted your ceiling height. My only caution would be to check with other owners of Mevo+ if you will find yourself hitting into a garage door that is metal. If you are, then you will want to check to see their experience regarding interference. Also, 11 feet wide is tight but likely manageable if you hit offset. You likely should go in their and take some practice swings with your driver to make sure you are comfortable.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with everything and please keep everyone posted on how things proceed.

Thank you very much for the replies guys. My ceiling height is only 2.5m or 8'2' - but i have practiced swinging a few clubs including my driver in there and it fits without me feeling like i am altering my swing. Im only 5'6" so that helps but I might not be able to invite any tall friends over to play! In terms of the width yeah I figure im going to have to offset slightly but from my practice swings it all feels doable.

Im really looking to get this unit to try and lower my handicap - i have been playing for a few years but i struggle to get the time to get out more than once a week and practice time at the range can be tricky so i really dont practice enough / at all. My handicap is still way too high at 22. My short game is reasonable, its off the tee im pretty wild and inconsistent with both driver and 3 wood, my long iron ball striking can also leave a bit to be desired. As well as having the fun of tru golf - the real 'driver' for a launch monitor is to hit lots of shots and get feedback to hopefully improve.

When i mentioned the garage door, I meant the garage door is closed to save on ceiling space, but that it would be directly behind the mevo unit - not hitting towards it. Does anyone know if this causes issues for the unit?

I got my mevo+ about a month ago and was having some issues getting putts to read. Not only would it miss putts but it would randomly think I hit a putt when i didn't. I contacted flightscope support and they got back to me immediately. When I explained my setup they suggested the fan inside my overhead projector (8ft in front of unit and 8ft high) was interfering with the radar. To test I hit some putts with the projector off and sure enough it worked flawlessly. Their recommended solution was to wrap the projector in a mesh screen to create a sort of faraday cage (like the screen on your microwave) to "block" the radar from picking up the fan motion.

I would think based on the projection of the radar that having metal behind the unit wouldn't interfere. That may be why they suggest placing the unit 1 foot off the wall. Worst case perhaps having some wire mesh behind the unit would help. If in doubt I would just contact flightscope support... they have been great!

Thanks MJ It doesnt look too tricky to do, i guess you just leave the lens apeture out of the case so you can project...I think i will have roughly the same setup so will probably have the same issues

Yes, pretty simple. In fact FS support suggested just covering the bottom, back, and sides (the parts in the radar’s field of vision I suppose) and not worrying about the front or the top. I just bought 3 small screens from
amazon ($9), folded them into a box shape, and slipped it over the back. Probably not the most professional look but working fine. I bought these ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086YP27DM..._kU2oFbZ5HT3NQ
