  • Mevo+ Usage tips?

    Hi all,

    First post here.

I received my Mevo+ last week (8 weeks after getting on a suppliers waiting list, no up-front payment or deposit required, great service from www.golfswingsystems.co.uk). I'm using it in Indoor Short mode hitting in to my 3m3 practise cage in the garden. The garden slopes downhill a bit - levels are probably a bit off so I'm sure I can get better results with some setup tweaking but overall I'm already very pleased. Having only been playing for less than two years this is a really useful tool. I think distances are a bit off - a good strike with the driver registers about 205 yards total (E6 range) while on the course with a good strike I'll drive 220-250 depending on the fairway slope, wind, temperature etc. Irons seem closer, perhaps +/- 10 yards. I'm sure this is just because I need to tweak my setup. Shot shape seems accurate and this is really what I wanted a launch monitor for - so that I can work on my swing and get useful feedback about launch direction, draw, fade, slice and so on.

I went for the Mevo over SkyTrak for the outdoor capabilities and because my wife plays left handed, so it seems more likely that I can work out a setup enabling us both to play from a central strike position without too much faffing around. Something I need to work on a bit but I believe it should be possible. I'm now thinking about building a 5x8m garden golf studio / gym so we can enjoy a virtual round or practise in all weathers but that'll require some thought and planning - probably a project for next year.

The only bad thing I can say is that it's annoying that the unit connects to devices using a WiFi hotspot rather than bluetooth (which the RPi inside the Mevo+ has the capability for).

I have a few questions regards using the software - hopefully some of you guys who have had your units for a bit longer will be able to advise me. I have FS Golf on my iPhone and E6 on my iPad (standard not pro).

    FS Golf -

The video capture is a great idea but a lot of the time I don't want it and this seems to slow the whole process down. Is there some way I can set it up to use purely as a range/shot tracker rather than full tracker/video capture?

    E6 -

The first issue I have is that if I launch E6 in online mode, then switch to the Mevo+ WiFi, then switch back to E6; I find E6 often doesn't pick up the Mevo+ device. I then have to kill E6 and open it while connected to the Mevo+ wifi which puts E6 in offline mode. Irritating and a limitation caused by the Mevo+ using WiFi rather than Bluetooth connectivity. Anyone else have this issue and how have you worked around it? If only Flightscope gave us the option of joining the Mevo+ to an existing WiFi network this would allow E6 to operate in online mode while connected to the Mevo device. Most IoT devices allow you to do this and if they can't find the WiFi network you have configured they then revert to hotspot mode. Perhaps something we can request Flightscope to implement in future?

Secondly is there a way to have the E6 range display the AoA parameter? The Mevo+ is capable of delivering this number as it's available in the FS Golf app. I'm just not using that for the reason stated above which make it really slow and clunky.

Overall I'm enjoying and am happy with the unit. Hopefully someone can give me a few pointers on overcoming these niggles so I can get even more enjoyment out of it.

    glad you're enjoying!
FS Golf - there are icons on the upper/upper right portion of the app that you can choose to get you out of video recording mode, i believe
E6 - Switching wifi would be a pain; Having E6 on PC with ethernet connection allows PC to be connected to internet via ethernet and mevo via wifi. works perfectly. There are ethernet adapters for ipad, but i'm not sure if iOS allows a simultaneous dual connection.
    - i'm guessing AoA isn't available to E6 as of now, but not 100% sure. if not, E6 is continually updating, so maybe in the future? others may know for sure

That's great, thanks. I found the 'view' button in FS Golf whereby I can choose to see the modelled shot rather than camera output. Hopefully this will mean faster turnaround between shots, if not I guess I'll go back to using the E6 range. I'll give it a go once the rain stops!

I might consider E6 on a PC in the future once I have a full indoor studio setup, but $2500 for a license... crazy, that's more than the Mevo+, surely not worth the cost unless you have money to burn. I'm still learning about all of this but seems like TGC2019 would be cheaper and offer better value. In terms of staying online while connecting to the Mevo+ I had a similar idea and rigged up a MikroTik mAP Lite with a £16 lightening port to LAN adapter to give the iPad a second wireless network connection. Seems to work fine.

I agree $2,500 is a lot to spend but there are other options with E6 Connect. You can subscribe to the basic package for $300/year and that includes 27 courses and online peer-to-peer play. Or $600/year for the expanded subscription and you get their full 96 course library. https://trugolf.com/technology/e6-connect-software/
