  • Device to use for awesome golf.

I have recently received my mevo+

I don't currently have an iOS device so not currently using the free e6 courses.

I'm looking to buy awesome golf so the family can also get some use out of it and hopefully increase their interest in golf.

I was wondering on people opinions on what device to use?

I own an android phone and a MacBook Pro both incompatible with most software!!!!

So my choices are to get an iPad? Is there a big difference between the regular iPad and iPad pro? I'm looking to buy second hand. I can pick up an iPad pro 9.7 first gen for a decent price.

I can pick up an iPad 5 for about £60 cheaper....

Or I could look at getting a Windows laptop?

iPad is the preference as I can then use the e6 courses.

Just to clarify I don't intend using a projector and happy to just view the app on the devices screen!

    Thanks

NO personal experience as I decided to go the Gaming PC route, but when I was considering it, my research showed I would be better with the fastest iPad available for the E6 software performance - I had it narrowed down to the iPad Pro 11" or the new iPad Air.

I think th iPad 5 and iPad Pro 1 have the same processor - but the Pro model may have better GPU performance.

If you were to buy new Apple has a pretty good return policy if it doesn't meet your expectations.

I don't think I could bring myself to by a tablet for 1k+ especially when only using for one purpose.

I'll have a look at the specs

      Thanks

Yeah, that's the conclusion I came to also - hence the gaming PC. depending on the price you see on the used market - the latest iPad (8th generation) with A12 Bionic chip for 329 (with a return policy) seems decent. What would worry me about the iPad pro 1 or iPad 5 is they are the starting point on E6 spec requirements.

There is a difference in quality between the pro models and non pro models. There have been a few videos posted by Golf Simulator Videos about iPad models. There are also several threads in this forum about various iPad and iPhone capabilities and display qualities. Read and watch them to see what will work best for you.

I have both a gaming PC and an iPad pro and am finding I use the iPad pro the most, and have had no performance issues with e6, Awesome Golf, FS Golf. The trade-off is you need to make sure you iPad is always charged before playing, and that the iPad has a cell phone connection (as FS will take the WiFi).

I still use the gaming PC for TGC, and will probably start to use it more once FS provide PC software (and hoping e6 will to).

I prefer Awesome Golf on the iPad because it's convenient to use the touchscreen to set the aimer in various games. It's definitely a great family game, my kids really enjoy playing it.

Can't you just tether to your phone via Bluetooth for internet connection? I've seen this mentioned a few times.

Can't you have an iPad on charge whilst playing??

Looking into purchasing a Mevo + with the TGC for next winter, what kind of gaming laptop did you go with? Thanks.

I cover them both in the channel. They look the same essentially iPad or PC. Awesome Golf was designed to work well on most devices with low GPU requirements. Here is the playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...u0rJetbQUnVp8q

Thanks I've watched a few of your videos must have missed the ones comparing the iPads will have a look. Graphics arent really too much of an issue for me. As long as they are playable I don't care too much of its HD quality. I'm not planning on using a projector although that may change

I use my iPad 6th gen with no issues on any of the FS apps, Awesome Golf, or E6. E6 can have a slight stutter at times, but its barely noticible unless you are specifically looking for it. Since iPad resolution is scaled down for E6, personally I don't really see any need to spend for an iPad Pro or Air for the minimal improvement in framerates or graphics they may provide.

I would go withgon iPad 6th gen or newer though. 5 is the bare minimum spec for E6, so if E6 does push an update for iOS (its been rumored) it may get outdated quick..

I project my iPad using an apple to HDMI adapter which also has a power port to keep iPad charged up.. I also tether my iPad to my cellphone via bluetooth to share my cell data when playing awesome golf. I play E6 in offline mode.

              Hi Danny,

I got an Ipad Pro from Sky for about £20 a month - with a small amount of data plan. I think its a 4 year plan - but you can upgrade whilst in the deal if necessary. But these iPads are normally good for that length of time.
That was for the Pro - the normal iPads were about £10 a month and the Airs were about £15.

With AwesomeGolf you have to be aware that your machine have to be connected to the internet at the same time it is connected to the mevo+! Therefore you need to have the LTE Version or you have to tether with your phone while playing AwesomeGolf. You can also use a ethernet-dongle to connect via LAN

I use an iPad 8(WiFi only) with no issues with my mevo plus using E6 golf. It’s actually a pretty smooth set up because I use an old Gen 3 Apple TV hooked up to the projector and just Airplay(screen mirror) the iPad. I actually bought the iPad 8 because it has the latest GPUs from Apple. Just less cores active than the top of the line iPad Pro, which doesn’t matter because the workload doesn’t even come close to leveraging those extra cores.

One thing that bothered me was the lost internet connection error message when the iPad 8 connects to the mevo plus. So I Bluetooth tethered my phone to the iPad 8 and that error message went away. I download everything using home WiFi, the only data usage is for updating mevo plus firmware and getting rid of the error message. I think you don’t need to do this if your iPad has cellular data, but I wasn’t going to pay $30/month just to have it for a dedicated golf simulator device.

One key item. Make sure your Apple TV is also connect to your mevo plus WiFi network. It will ask if you want to troubleshoot because there is no internet connection. Just say connect anyways. Then screen mirror on your iPad and you are all set.

If you want sound, I also put an optic audio converter box for the Apple TV to 3.5mm plug so that can play through my speakers. The screen mirror for Airplay also mirrors sound.

                    Hope that helps!
