  • Flightscope Mevo+ Putting - Questions and Findings...

I just tried out putting for the first time this weekend, and its raised a lot of questions on how to make it work best….

Thought we could use this thread to pool together questions for Flightscope (and hit them up once), and also share any findings….

    Questions for Flightscope
    • What is the shortest distance putts we should expect to register?
    • On the recommended putting setup - the strip is the right side of the Mevo, can this also be setup on the left side with the same results? Any reason for one side to be preferred? (see Par2pro’s posting https://www.par2pro.com/FlightScope/...up%20Guide.pdf)
    • Its mentioned metallic dots can be used on the balls, although is there a benefit to putting with dots? Will it help with reads?
    • Is there a benefit to having the putting strip off-centre from the Mevo line of sight? Or will it work just as well putting direct in front of the Mevo?
    • Why 7 feet from ball to Mevo for putting? Is this to give more time to roll, or because it registers better if closer to the Mevo? For example, if people have a longer roll distance do they still have to move closer to the Mevo when putting?
    • In the future - Could there be a way to attach markers to the putter to help Mevo better capture putts?

    My Findings
    • My setup: 8 feet from Mevo to tee, and 8 feet from tee to screen. A 1.5 inch raised mat, relative to the Mevo height. My putting space is on the left side of the tee (looking down the line), versus Flightscope’s recommendation to use the right side. I’m using the same grass surface as the hitting mat, not a dedicated putting strip
    • I need to roll putts at least 8 feet (distance of my screen), anything shorter would not tend to register.
    • Anything further than 15 inches perpendicular to the Mevo camera line will tend not register
    • Metallic dots did not seem to improve the missed reads
    • Putting directly in front of the Mevo seemed to work as well as putting from the side
    • Putting 7 feet (as recommended) versus 8 feet from the Mevo did not seem to change the results.
    • Sporadically I'd get a strong pulled putt, yet the physical ball would be going straight.
    • Putts would rarely register with 17 degrees tilt on the Mevo, and would work best at 12 degrees (simulator setting)

Consider turning on Straight Putt. This removes any pushes/pulls and will start the ball straight every time. My experience is that mevo+ isn't accurate enough to get HLA right so I remove that variable. It's also the norm to do so on most Tourneys online.

'straight putt' is that specific to software? TCG2019 for example?

Straight putting patch is TGC only..... It was implemented to help with the random 3 degree HA from Skytrak.

@Virtualadam - Did you ever ask your questions of Flightscope and get answers?

Been so busy lately haven't had a chance to get back to this. I'll send off right now, and post any findings. Cheers.

I just updated my mevo+ to 0.17. I'm one who had no luck with 0.16. Constant ghost putting with my projector on and my air heater on. I called to get it rolled back to 0.12. It helped, but putting under 15-20 feet was almost undoable due to non-reads and short chipping wasn't great.

I just used the driving range for a few clubs, tried the chipping range, and tried putting. Then played 18 holes with 3yard gimmes. This is all in TGC 2019. It is now playable! I'm having very good luck with it. The driving range seemed good. Chipping was much better! can do pretty short chips now. The shape of the shots isn't always good, with lots going much higher than the actual hit, but the distance is better. I can now successfully putt under 8 feet! Haven't tried really short putts yet though. In the 18 holes, I sunk 6 putts instead of gimmes. I hadn't sunk more than 1 before this. I did have maybe 3 non-reads on the putts, but that was it. It definitely was the least buggy, most enjoyable round I have played yet.

A couple odd things. The TGC interface app is acting a bit funny. It now recommends 10 degrees tilt for me, but the tilt is not showing up in the app. I needed to hook up my phone with the FS app to set it. Maybe just a bug? At this point, I'm gonna need some new features to warrant updating it now! haha Its definitely worth trying, you can always roll back.

I've heard others say that TGC recommends a tilt for them...where do you see this? I always just set it at 10-11 degrees. Curious if there is guidance.

Good info back from Flightscope, hopefully this helps others with setup:
        • What is the shortest distance putts we should expect to register?
          • We have reads from Mevo+ to tee distance of 4ft, 5ft and 6ft but with 7 feet being the optimal distance giving us the best results.
        • On the recommended putting setup - the strip is the right side of the Mevo, can this also be setup on the left side with the same results? Any reason for one side to be preferred?
          • Again, we have seen best results to the right side in terms of the tracking path of the ball and tracking accuracy but you may want to give this a go for yourself
        • Its mentioned metallic dots can be used on the balls, although is there a benefit to putting with dots? Will it help with reads?
          • For putting the dots do not need to be on the ball, the dots are only used to track the spin of the ball.
        • Is there a benefit to having the putting strip off-centre from the Mevo line of sight? Or will it work just as well putting direct in front of the Mevo?
          • Sometimes the putter gets in the way of the tracking path of the ball so having it off-centre provides more room for the sensor to see the ball.
        • Why 7 feet from ball to Mevo for putting? Is this to give more time to roll, or because it registers better if closer to the Mevo? For example, if people have a longer roll distance do they still have to move closer to the Mevo when putting?
          • As said in a previous answer, we have found best results at 7 feet in terms of accurately tracking the movement of the ball. If people have a longer roll distance the distance behind the should still remain at 7 feet, but the more roll distance you have the better it is for the Mevo+ to track as it is able to track the ball for longer.
