Public Service Announcement - My MEVO+ died a few weeks out of warranty...

It would not power on or charge. I thought that it was probably just a dead battery, so I ordered a replacement battery from Nitecore. Shipping was quoted as 7 days. So while I waited, I also contacted customer support at Flightscope to see what they suggested.

FS support suggested I try two things: 1)remove the battery and then place it back in the unit to insure proper contact 2) try a different charger. I thought the advice was odd, given the documented problems caused by using chargers other than the proprietary one that comes with the unit. But I tried both suggestions. Neither worked, so I emailed Flightscope and asked for a next step.

Today they recommended I send the unit back and purchase their "Mevo Protection Plan" for $500 to cover repairs for one calendar year. I wasn't too thrilled with that suggestion, to be honest.

But the new battery from Nitecore also arrived today. It took about 5 seconds to pop it in, and the Mevo+ powered right up and was fully charged in no time.

I love the unit and I'm happy to have it working again, but I'm a little disappointed that customer support wanted me to send them $500, but never suggested trying a new battery first.

Shout out to Nitecore for the $20 fix.

    Ouch..

My Mevo+ died about 10 months from my purchase.. not a battery issue though, and was replaced under warranty.

Personally I think a requirement for a flat $500 fee for 1 year of service/repair is a bit steep for a consumer device that costs $2000. Maybe for the top tier units used by professionals, fitters, coaches that make a living using an X3, and need fast service and repair, sure.. maybe there's value there.. but for a consumer level device I'd like to see more reasonable options, maybe something like this:
    • No protection plan - $50-75 fee for analysis + an estimate for any repair costs.. and provide pricing/options for repair or replacement if can't be repaired. That might be much less than $500 such as your case where it was just the battery, or if non-repairable, maybe give a break on pricing of a refurbished unit
    • $500 annual support plan that includes continued tech support, expedited repairs at no cost, other service related perks..
    • $250 annual protection plan that covers repair costs only for those that don't need hand holding and support for setup, troubleshooting
    • Maybe some kind of reduced pricing for adding a support or protection plan at time of Mevo+ purchase, like initial 2-5 years covered if purchased with Mevo+
I have no idea what repairs would cost on one of these, so maybe the $500 per year for this type of service plan is in line with the risk of needed repairs, I don't know... but I can't imagine there's many consumers that would spend an additional $500 EVERY YEAR on a protection plan... and then having your device with zero moving parts need a repair within the first couple years with no other option than a flat $500 fee regardless of if it needed a new battery or significant repair, seems a little steep to me.

I'll take my chances... No way I'd spend $500 every year for insurance on a $2000 device... this is probably the only area where Flightscope Mevo+ value is a bit lacking..
