  • Mevo+ for beginner golfer

    Hi All

I am looking to purchase my first Launch Monitor for home to help improve my game. I have been playing for about 6 months and tend to hit about around the 100 mark. I feel as if I really need to hit more frequently if I am going to improve but getting to a course / driving range more than once a week is near impossible.

I have just purchased a golf cage for the backyard, already have a nice hitting mate - now I just need to pull the trigger on a Launch Monitor. The Mevo+ is where I am leaning (possible the Full Swing Kit but the release of this has been AWFUL).

Ultimately, all I want is a Launch Monitor that is relatively accurate on distance and shot shape. I am not at the level where I need to know all of the other numbers that come with the high-end LMs.

Is the Mevo+ going to give me what I want and really help me improve my game?

    Simple. Answer is YES.

As long as you don't have a metal fence or metal shed etc right behind the cage/net (e.g. on other side of where the ball hits the net), Mevo+ will work well and will be all you need. It will make you hit way more balls at home than without one, and it comes with FS Golf, FS Skills, and basic E6 Connect (iOS only) all for free. As for the FS Kit, it will be 2x the price of the Mevo+, yet it won't make you hit any more balls or make you a better player that's for certain. But it may measure more club data if you really feel the need for meaured club path, dynamic loft etc. (even that is not certain at this point) But yeah, it sounds like you won't need it. (which is fine, as majority of people do not need it even if they think they do)

Garmin R10 would also be a contender if your budget is really tight. But it doesn't measure some key ball & club data, and so you end up with less accurate (and sometimes, outright wrong) shot shape compared to the very accurate Mevo+ (and FS Kit assumpted). So personally, I recommend Mevo+ as a minimum, and only go up to FS Kit or GC3 if money is less of a concern and want something more premium with 1~2 extra measured club data. (but know that they would still not measure enough club data for accurate club fittings like the Trackman, X3 or GC Quad etc.)

Thanks - that's some great info and reassuring.

I did look at the R10 in detail but I've seen so many videos of ball flight being way off (opposite shot shape to higher end LMs) that it worries me I'd be teaching myself the wrong thing and would end badly on the course.
it looks like the Mevo+ is the best bet for me. Id have about 10m between the net and a metal fence, which I'm hoping is more than enough to avoid any interference.

Can't be certain but I would think that should be far away enough for the radar reflection to really cause any issues. Most people who had issues with Mevo+ or Trackman were those who had a metal garage door right behind the net.

But someone was able to fix that (link before) with a metal mesh as the radar gets deflected and doesn't reflect straight back due to it. But yeah, that would be for the worst case scenario.

I've recently started working on my first simulator setup in my garage. It's semi-permanent, consisting of archery baffle netting on a curtain track (the kind you find in hospitals). Next stage is choosing the launch monitor... I was going to go with Skytrak, but decided to wait until the PGA Merchandise Show to see if there

I think the mevo+ is a great tool for improving your game, and offers so much data that can really hone in your valuable practice time. I use the skills app a lot and think that combine type practice is very useful translating practice to course play.

I also highly recommend finding a local pro who uses a LM in their lessons to take a few lessons with and tell them you have a LM at home.

Very few golfers ever take lessons despite them costing about the same as a round of golf. I think for a new golfer it is even more crucial as you have a chance to nail down the fundamentals the right way before hitting thousands and thousands of balls ingraining bad habits.

I took lessons for the first time this year at 42 and I've been amazed at the change just a few lessons has had on my own golf performance. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner, the little tweaks resulted in quick improvements, and my ball striking has never been better after just a handful of lessons.

Thanks mate. Appreciate the feedback. After seeing Flightscope's announcement yesterday (and assuming it is additional data being unlocked), I have decided to pull the trigger.

Completely agree with you re lessons too. The only lesson I have taken is for the short game and that made a huge difference. Definitely need to book a few more! Well worth the money.

Even if it turns out to be more software compatibility or Android e6 or something else, the monitor has a ton of utility and no recurring user fees (yet). It's a beast at the range and though it's not perfect indoors, it's significantly more reliable than the Garmin unit and easier to align properly.

My only gripes are reporting slightly higher driver spin numbers than GCQ and that you can't do a wired connection with it to get rid of the half-second shot delay from WiFi data transfer, but those are pretty minor.
          Working...
