  • New Flightscope External Battery Packs coming soon

Just saw on their instagram live that newly released external battery packs are going to be available soon. You can see a photo of the unit on their instagram page (giveaway post), its sitting on the far left side (flat black bar)

Interesting. It looks like it's a Flightscope-branded Anker charger.

Coincidentally, I reached out to them via chat last week asking about longer charging cables and/or external battery packs and received the following reply:

"Our technical support team recommends using charging cables that are less than 1 foot in length. This is because the longer the cord the more resistance the charge faces and thus diminishes. If the cord is too long by the time the charge reaches the Mevo+ it will not be strong enough to charge the battery.
I do have a recommendation for you which I will put in a link below.
I have included a link to an external battery pack below. I wanted to make you aware that manufacturers do change their products all the time. While the link I have provided you at the moment are approved right now, the manufacturer could change the specs at a later date. I wanted to let you know this because if you decide to order a battery pack at a later date there could be a chance it is not the same product you are expecting. That being said if you are looking for battery packs in the future look for these specs (5V/2.1-2.4A). If it is below 2.1 it will not put out sufficient power. Another thing to be aware of is when you use a battery pack that puts out 2.1 amps it is best to avoid using it outside. The reason for this is that the battery pack can heat up and when it gets too hot (from being outside) it will not put out the necessary power, and your Mevo+ will stop charging.

If you are able to use the charging cord that came with your Mevo+ with the battery pack that would be your safest bet."
So, any external battery pack that meets the above requirement should work fine. I purchased the one in the link and have used it a couple of times and it works perfectly.

I think it's just an Anker with a FlightScope sticker on it. They even called it an Anker in the post. I don't think they're truly releasing "their own."

FWIW I've used a 10' USB cable with mine and it's been fine. It's also an Anker cable.

In Flightscope's Twitter feed today they had a photo of their setup at the PGA show, including the battery pack. Someone spotted it and asked about it, and the reply from Flightscope was that it's an Anker powercore essential 20000.

I’ve been using this for about a year without any issues:

For those of us that are battery illiterate, approximately how many hours of use would a Anker 20000 give you? Flightscope answered via Instagram. Gives you about 7 hours of additional battery life.

Is it not advisable to leave the Mevo+ plugged in all of the time?

I was having charge issues not long ago and asked this exact question - about plugging into an extension cord connected to a wall outlet. While they said it was fine to plug the unit into an extension cord, using an approved USB cable and their charge brick, they recommended not leaving it plugged into the cord/wall when the Mevo+ was turned off.

My routine is: I leave the charge brick connected to the extension cord at all times and USB cable unplugged; when I'm going to use it, a) plug USB cable into the charge brick, b) turn on Mevo+. When I'm done, a) unplug USB cable (so I don't forget), b) turn off Mevo+.

Thanks. Mine is sitting next to an outlet. Maybe I'll have one of those surge protectors with power switch, and just flip that off when needed.

Using the Anker, what is the recommended procedure? Do I leave the M+ plugged in to the Anker all the time, and then I can leave the Anker plugged in to a charger?

I have been using a battery backup since I have had the Mevo+ (a year ago). I have never plugged it into an outlet. There is a post on here somewhere about the power from an outlet seems to interfere with the radar system and give inconsistant readings. There was also mention of "bad power" in a home that may do damage to equiptment.
I either use the internal battery or my external battery. The external battery gives me plenty of rounds before I have to recharge it.
Not sure if all of what I was told was true, but this is how I have used my Mevo and it has been working great.

I just purchased this on Amazon and it's awesome so far. Mevo+ was fully charged when attached and pack has dropped from 4 bars down to 3 in a hour (Mevo+ still showing plugged in). At this rate I'd estimate 5-6hrs life including Mevo+ battery.

I'm not sure if you will see the 20% discount when you click on it, but I'm seeing $35.99 with 20% discount so was $30 with tax to my door.

                    Hope this helps someone.

I worry this external battery could reduce the internal battery life of the Mevo Plus. Per the technical spec for the support chat they recommend a 5V/2.4amp battery output. Your listed battery is 5V/3.0amp output. Basically it charges faster. Just remember with faster charging it means faster degradation. It may not effect the internal battery if the Mevo Plus is already fully charged. The Mevo could also have beefed up battery management hardware and it can reduce the amperage to protect the battery. Hard to say though unless you hook and amp meter on the usb cable and measure the draw at different internal battery levels. It’s a great deal on an external battery pack but I worry about the amperage rating.

I’ll try to find a 5V/3.0 amp source and measure it. I’m interested too.

Edit: Just checked the Anker technical data sheet and it list 3.0amps output as well. So yeah everything I wrote is total BS now…

Sorry Clubrepair, thank you for finding a great deal and sharing it with us.

An external battery can't "push" too much power into a device. the 3A rating means that this is the maximum amperage that the external battery is capable of delivering. It will only deliver as much power as the Mevo+ (or whatever is plugged into it) requires.
