  • Mevo+ Pro Package first impression from a rookie

Hello first time on the forums,

I have been playing for 2.5 years and have become a10 HDCP golfer on the East coast. I am a member of a golf club and average 200 rounds per year over the last two years. This fall I put in a driving range net in the back yard. In December I purchased the Mevo+, in January TGC 2019 and this week I upgraded to the Pro Package.

    Pro Package thoughts

    1) Installation on the FS golf app and connection to the unit was super smooth. I purchased the Pro Package update from rain or shine golf at the discounted priced. Within 12 hours I received the update code and had no problems upgrading the device.

I run the the FS app on my IPad and since I only have 1 internet connection it was a little bit of pain to update in following sense. Several times during the registration and upgrading you need to toggle back and forth between connecting to the Mevo+ and establishing a internet connection to talk to Flightscope. I was worried that minimizing the app, going to settings, changing what the device was connected to and then reopening the app back and forth several times would cause problems. But despite being a little clunky this went well. Absolutely no complaints.

    2) Hitting balls right away was easy. I opened the FS golf app and went to the range. Immediately all of the club path metrics were available and I was able to sort what was of interest to me onto the screen so I can watch ball flight and examine metrics. I was most interested in club path at first because this is what I am working on now with my teaching pro.

In the app and on the course I have always had a slight fade that evolves into a slice if I fall into old habits. But for the most part I think I have this resolved IRL, but every once in a while a wonky shot shows up. In looking at the club path and face to path it was easy enough to visualize the D-plane and explain any curvature of the flight. These numbers always seemed to agree with what the simulator was showing (which is not surprising) but also with what I experience on the course.

Of course I needed to play around with things so I took several severely out to in and in to out swings. While my shot shape was all over the place the Mevo+ was pretty good at telling me what I was doing with the club. I also started playing around with opening or closing the club face in varying degrees of severity and in each case the Mevo+ gave me a numbers I expected. During this "play period" it is hard to know if the path the Mevo+ provided matched what would happen in real life because these are not things I have done in real life .... but consistently the numbers matched the crazy things I was doing.

    3) Connecting to e6 or TGC was not as easy. Once I had done the requisite playing around I decided to play a few holes. I wanted to see if the club metrics would be transferred to TGC of if TGC would still be doing their estimated stuff. That is still not clear to me BTW.

First, I had the app updated and the pro package turned on. When I went into TGC 2019 the message I received was something about being unable to arm the sensor. Thankfully there was another post where someone else had a similar experience and the ProTee folks had posted a link to update the interface software. It took about 30 minutes to get through all of this stuff and re install the interface twice. The first time did not work, so I deleted all the old stuff and re-re- installed the interface and this did the trick. I was thankful ProTee was providing updates and was on the spot ... but I was disappointed that this was not more seamless. Surely Flightscope coordinates with the platforms their devices work with right?

After TGC did not work, I went to E6 to see if I could play one of the 5 included courses but in that APP there were no messages, just it appeared like there was no talking between the device and the app. Shots simply were not being recorded. Since I could not find an update and there was nothing useful on the forums yet, I abandoned the e6 and went back to work on TGC and eventually got that to work. I have still not been able to get e6 to work.

    4) Working with TGC. The flightscope interface looks a little different but there was nothing different in the game itself which was nice. As has been true for the last 3 weeks, I continued to find TGC a little more slicey that the FS golf app. I was hoping the fusion stuff would resolve this, but it has not. I am making the assumption that the Mevo+ simply sends ball data to the program for the first 10 feet (Net) and then the FS golf app and TGC apply their own algorithms to the initial ball data to predict outcomes. I prefer the the FS golf outcomes to the TGC outcomes but they are close and it is hard to know which one was right.

I am now trying to improve agreement and accuracy by fine tuning my set up. I have designed an adjustable base to get roll and elevation angle of the unit to optimal placement and I am seeing improvements. While the angle used to be 12 degrees I am waiting to see if the preferred elevation angle changes because everything is green on the set up screen now and I find it hard to believe that angle angle will work.

Beware that there is bugd in the new FS SKILL too. It has crashed at startup and after several times.

Thanks for the heads up ... although I do not use the skills app very often.

I have enjoyed the Mevo and think its a great tool to get better at golf. TGC must use a different algorithm than FS. I wish FS would share this with them. Small swing flaws are amplified on TGC. If I hit a pull on TGC it is going to be in the next fairway. If I leave the club 2 degrees open at impact it acts like I hit a bad slice. I have jumped over to FS golf app a few times after getting some weird ball flight on TGC to check my swing and FS golf tells me my swing isnt that bad. There are a few things TGC could improve on and this is one of them.

Interestingly enough, I find the FS app range to be too forgiving. My unit has been off since the update wit low distances on all software.

Great information. I just started using M+ with TGC2019 and FS app so it's great to hear other experiences.

            Hey,

So I've had my Mevo+ for a 3/4 months now. Nearing the end of my build. Will post photos soon but it's pretty textbook. 10ft of ball flight, 8 feet mevo+ to ball. Completely level surface. Turf arriving this week, still need a projector & I havent decided whether to get an iPad or gaming PC yet. I'm not sure how much I want to invest in sim software & gaming computer or get an iPad & stick with the free courses on e6. I havent even activated my E6 yet as I only have an android phone.

Anyhow, I done a lot of research before purchasing Mevo+ & I understand the device is not a trackman or gc4. It's going to have some short comings. I know a lot of people struggle with putting which I haven't tried yet as I have only used the FS apps & I know most people aren't convinced about driver spin numbers. I am pretty happy with the unit so far. I cant say whether Fusion Tracking has made much difference, I know there are further updates to come to FS apps. For me the most frustrating thing is shot shape. I am a 5hp & I pretty much draw most of my shots but I find the mevo+ under estimates my shot shape. I am meticulous when setting up the unit but it just simulates me hitting consistent straight pushes. I doudt there is anything Flightscope can do to ever improve this for the unit given the limited flight indoors.

This got me thinking about the reliability of the pro package numbers (which I probably won't purchase). I know I usually deliver a negative FTP number on trackman. If the mevo+ is showing straight pushes all the time for me it would bring me to question the reliability of the club data on pro package.

I experimented moving the unit more to the left if you were looking down the line & aligned it slightly to the right so it was more aligned to my in to out swing path. I was hitting the ball straight down the line then on the FS app. Still no real shot shape.

This was a bit of a long read but I just wanted to share my experience so far. Im not disappointed I bought the unit by any means but the shot shape issue for me is my only real gripe.

            Thanks!

You should be getting better results than that with the amount of flight space you have. Have you tried RCT balls? They make a big difference in spin. Might help accentuate the draw better for you.

That's interesting JakeGeezy. Perhaps try the RCT ball pipe. I am able to hit hooks and slices with a regular dotted ball.

In in the UK, RCT balls aren't easy to come by just yet.
