  • Comparing measured Path data in FS to algorithm in TGC

Just finished a 90 minute hitting session today. Got everything aligned, completed the drills my pro is having me work on and then hit for 30 minutes on the FS driving range and then 30 minutes on the TGC range.

Of course the ball flight on the TGC app consistently was more exaggerated than the FS golf app. I honestly don't want to make a strong statement about which algorithm is more accurate but I noticed the following:

In the FS golf app my measured swing path was consistently between 0 and 4 degrees from out to in with the highest on any swing being 6 degrees out to in. FTT was usually around 0 so on good swings I had a consistent pull fade with a 220 yd carry and usually on target +/- 5 yds. This matches what I typically see on the course with good swings.

In TGC I know the algorithm estimates a swing path but I think a comparison is interesting. TGC's estimated swing path never gave me anything less than 6 degrees from out to in and usually between 8 and 10 degrees out to in with the FTT fluctuating quite a but more than the FS golf app. The TGC 2019 estimated path matches well with the slicey ball flight it was giving me but not with the ball flight I usually see in the real world.

    So 2 questions:

Is it possible that the consistent disagreement between mevo's measured club path and the estimated club path in TGC 2019 is a strong indicator of a flaw in the TGC algorithm?

I want to take the Mevo+ out to the range to check for accuracy. However I want to keep the Mevo+ set to short indoor so that I get a truer comparison to my home set up. I think I read that when set to short indoor the device stops recording at 7' 10" before it hits the net but will having the device at the the range but not hitting into a net have an effect on accuracy even if I leave the device at sort indoor?

I agree Dizz. The TGC 2019 club data is based on the new flight laws given you hit the center of the club and reduce the possibility of gear effect. It is more accurate with irons than woods. Its not perfect but certainly provides reasonable estimation. I have a GC2 as well as the Mevo plus and have been doing many comparisons over the last year. I absolutely trust the gC2 over the Mevo plus even though I think the Mevo plus has been very reasonable indoors other than the short chips, putting and certain shots where spin axis is off.

I have setup the MEVO plus with the Pro package with the FS app on my Ipad Pro along side with the GC2 connected to TGC2019 on my computer. That allows me to compare the ball and club data between both simultaneusly. What I am seeing is ball speed, vertical and horizontal launch are bang on with both. Spin is very close as well but gets wonky with the Mevo plus on higher speeds. Spin axis is often underestimated with the Mevo plus vs GC2 but 90% of the time in the same direction and occasionally the polar opposite to the Mevo plus. Usually that's with tight straight draws or fades and not massive hooks vs slice. When the spin axis and numbers are siilair between the 2 units the club data is close between the estimated TGC2019 algo and the measured Mevo Plus. I suspect the club data gets off on TGC 2019 when a lot of gear effect is a factor. I would trust the Mevo plus club data over the TGC 2019 estimated club data in general.

My only area that the Mevo plus struggles is the short chips and putts. I absolutely love chipping and putting on the GC2 but struggle with the Mevo plus. I think the Mevo plus is an excellent unit for full swing but short chips and putting are the areas that are suboptimal if you want that in your simulation play. Hopefully that will improve with software updates just like the very low carry distances I am seeing between the GC2 and Mevo since the last update.

I absolutely hate the short game stuff with any simulator. The short game is typically the better part of my game but on the Mevo+ or my friends Skytrack, chipping is like giving a cow a gun. I miss having the feel of the green.

I Agree, In simulation with Mevo before fusion tracking I set auto score at 60 yards, now it is not perfect but I will give a try at 15 yards and I think 30 is safe. Putting distance is still a joke but at least the shots are read and the direction pretty good now. 6 feets gimme settings will always be a dream with Doppler units whatever the firmware …

Accurate camera units like the Foresight or Uneekor are way better with the chipping and putting. Nothing is perfect like real life but pretty good on distances and feel. Short chips and putts react very well. Try it if you get a chance. I hate chipping and putting on the Skytrak.

As with putting, short game (<15y) is practiced easily enough elsewhere that I have no real use for it in the sim, other than for flavour. Not to mention that, in the event that I've missed an approach shot, I'm almost certainly looking at sand, rough, a truly suboptimal lie, or any combination of the three, so hitting off a pristine surface doesn't really translate to that part of my game.

Hopefully I'll have something better than the Mevo+ in a year or so but, for now, I'm happy with dialing in partial wedge distances, approach clubs and working on positive AOA with driver.

I fully agree bubb. Simulated golf is best for the long game and one can never completely simulate rough, sand, divots or even soft/hard turf. Even chipping and putting on sims are pure feel and more for fun. I am curious to see how the short game app will work with the Mevo plus now that it has the fusion technology. I would also be interested in hearing from current X3 users on how they like the short game app? Correct me if I am wrong but aren't Mevo plus users getting this with the updated FS app?

I owe Pro tee an apology. I was super disappointed with the physics of flight within the TGC 2019 app. SO much so that I put away the app for 5 days. Did not finish the tournament I was in at the time and was trying to figure out if I could sell my license and recoup some of the money I spent. I was having to aim 15-20 yards left of the fairway on drives hoping the ever present slices would not be so severe that I was not OB on the right.

            1) During those 5 days I focused on my swing by doing the club path drills my pro had suggested. The FS golf app suggested I did need to do these drills, but that there was no way I should have been seeing the severe slices I was seeing in TGC 2019.

            2) I went to the course and played 18 on Thursday and Saturday to confirm I was not on crack and that I have a slight fade and not a dramatic slice on good swings.

            3) I went to the drawing board and worked on the alignment of my system.

and then I discovered that when I had to reinstall the flightscope interface when the pro-package was purchased that the interface reverted to indoor mode instead of short indoor.

            4) I changed the setting on the interface from Indoor to Short indoor.

All of a sudden I am able to aim at the target. Now instead on a 40+ yard curvature on the ball flight I am +/- 5 yards of curvature on a good shot.

Today I joined a no putt society tournament again ... I was +2 until the long par 3 16 at cypress

Bottom line ... I am pretty sure the work I put in on my swing was not the difference maker. Failure to follow directions was the root of all my problems.

            Sorry Pro-Tee
