  • New Mevo+ user - advice for better ball speed and push draw reads

    Hi All,

    Intro

I've had my Mevo+ pro package a couple weeks and have been using it a lot - about 10 sessions in FS golf already. So far my experience is overall positive - it seems fairly accurate with my short end of the bag. But I am getting some issues in the mid-long irons and woods and would love to pick your brains on best setup distances and such for more accurate reads. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and respond.

I have an open ticket with Flightscope and I will have more info after I get to take it to a real range and compare actual ball flights to Mevo+ detected in the outdoor setting. Then I will swap over to short indoor again and compare actual ball flight to Mevo+ predictions.

    My observed issues:
    1. Ball speed is measured too low with longer clubs. My club head speed seems fairly close, but ball speed and thus smash factor are way low. 5,6,7 iron are iffy where sometimes I just question my swing, but 4 iron and longer are significantly off consistently.
      1. My expected / past trackman smash factors are as follows:
        • Driver - 1.49-1.5
        • 3 Wood - 1.48-1.49
        • 2 iron - 1.45+
        • 4 iron - 1.43-1.44
        • 5 iron - 1.42
        • 6 iron - 1.40
        • 7 iron - 1.36
        • 8 iron - 1.30
      2. My observed Mevo+ smash factors have been:
        • Driver - 1.43
        • 3 wood - 1.41
        • 2 iron - 1.39
        • 4 iron - 1.34
        • 6 iron - 1.35
        • 8 iron - 1.3
      3. As you can see it measures accurately at the 8 iron and below but everything below that is off - with even more significant drop off in the reads at the 4 iron and below where the ball speeds relative to the club head speed DROP. I have had some good shots on the 4 iron where the carry distance is shorter than my 6 iron which is evidenced here.
    2. My push/draw shot shape is not registering or captured properly by Mevo+ with the longer clubs. It captures it beautifully with short irons. But more often than not, with a 6 iron and below, shots that I KNOW are drawing (even overdrawing), are showing on Mevo + as straight as an arrow pushes. We are talking club path numbers like 4-6 degrees in-to-out so nothing crazy. And all FTP numbers are left. Some a couple degrees others even 5+ degrees and still no draw. I even tried to hook the crap out of some and it doesn't register/ This is all while aiming right down the red line too.

My answers to your sanity check questions:
    • I'm on latest firmware and aware tilt should be 12 degrees now in FS golf.
    • I'm hitting outdoors into a net. Short indoor setting // Ball to net measurement: 13 feet // Ball to Mevo+ measurement: has varied (7 - 8.5) feet, but I always tape measure and put exactly the right number in.
    • My tee height has been 2-3 inches to get the right target alignment. I hit off a Fiberbuilt mat on my grass and my lawn has a slight uphill slope in the direction I am hitting.
    • I'm aware of potential environmental factors and don't think anything is interrupting reads.
    • I've tried the silver stickers on good balls, the RCT proV1x balls, no stickers, and all get same issues.
    • I'm a 3 handicap that's played 20+ rounds this summer and could close my eyes and tell you if I hit a push, pull, toe, heel, thin, or fat shot.
    • I have lots of experience with launch monitors and know how to interpret stats.
    • I have very recent data points from trackman for my entire bag for a gapping analysis so I know what my stats on good shots should be.

    My questions:
    • Ball to radar measurement: do you recommend closer to 7, 8, or 9 feet in my case?
    • Does tee height make a huge difference so long as you maintain the ball in the white ball picture on target alignment tool?
    • Is the slight uphill slope (5 degrees tops) impacting my readings perhaps? Should I try going downhill instead?
    • Have any other high speed or push draw players observed similar issues since the latest firmware update?

is your hitting area flat, or also at an angle? This would also suggest that your radar is below impact location?

Yes my hitting area is flat and I can elevate the Mevo+ to get the tee height down to 0-1 inch if needed. I suppose my radar is slightly below impact location but I get the target alignment to put the red square right on top of my mat and the golf ball right in the little white ball overlay in that alignment tool. I will try tomorrow with the zeroed out tee height by elevating the Mevo+ unit slightly and see if that changes anything but not getting my hopes up.

I use 9' for Mevo to tee.

Not sure what your specific issue might be and it certainly isn't the only factor affecting smash, but Trackman and Flightscope measure at sightly different points during impact (max compression vs initial contact) so there's a few numbers that aren't directly transferable. You can see this when you compare the Trackman tour averages against Flightscope and there's a few discrepancies in AoA, Smash and CHS.

There's likely something else at play here because you wouldn't lose 0.06 smash on a 2i from the measurement difference.

      • Ball to radar measurement: do you recommend closer to 7, 8, or 9 feet in my case?\
        • Flightscope recommends 8 feet for short indoor and is better than 7 feet as that extra feet allows it to see the club a bit sooner.
        • So i would just stick with 8 feet for shot indoor mode.
        • Personally, I feel it still works best at 16 degrees with FS Golf tbh so I never use it at 12 degrees. YMMV.
      • Does tee height make a huge difference so long as you maintain the ball in the white ball picture on target alignment tool?
        • Never really felt it affected much.
      • Is the slight uphill slope (5 degrees tops) impacting my readings perhaps? Should I try going downhill instead?
        • Not sure but if you place Mevo+ on an uphill slope, it being sat at 12 degrees from flat would technically mean it is only 7 degrees?
        • So Maybe try increasing the angle?
      • Have any other high speed or push draw players observed similar issues since the latest firmware update?
        • I do regularly hit push draws and when I do, it picks them up very well with latest fw I noticed.
        • My ball speed with the driver is ~160mph for reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptmr_LVT4VI
        • And ~145mph with my 3 iron (P750 Tour Proto)

I tried everything from 12-18 degrees today on the tilt and still exact same problems. It seems marginally better when I put the unit 7 feet as opposed to 8 feet from the ball but the distances, ball speeds, smash factors, and lack of draw on my push draw shot shape continue to be a problem. I tried all of these on short indoor and on indoor with 14 feet ball to net. I’ve triple checked alignment. I even tried tee height 0 inches and 2” and 4” trying to elevate the unit to be level with the ball on my mat or bring it down still same issues. I absolutely flush a 4 iron that I know is drawing and should carry 225+ and it reads a straight push carry 195 smash factor in the 1.3s. Then I hit an 8 iron from the same spot and it Reads correctly 3 times in a row carrying 175+ with a perfect baby push draw and a smash factor of 1.3+. Again it’s only an issue with longer clubs so it has to be a radar speed or a dynamic loft measuring related issue.

Yeah that's strange. You may need to contact Flightscope to see if they have a better idea or is a known issue etc.

I've had a couple of sessions with Flight Scope, initially getting a number of bad reads/no-reads on short shots and putts so they replaced my unit (also with shots in general shorter than IRL). Then I had to make some modifications to my setup. I converted a bay of my garage to a sim room and built a flat platform/hitting area (about 12' wide 12' deep) elevated 3-4 inches due to garage slope, hitting area is perfectly flat. The area behind my hitting area is floor level, so I had to build a platform 20 inches wide about 6 ft. deep so the Mevo+ Pro was positioned at the same level as my hitting area which when previously elevated to the same level alone created a valley which is not good according to flight scope(similar to what elevating your mevo might do). I have 10' ball to screen, 8' Mevo to ball as recommended by Flight Scope. I don't get "no-reads" and chips and puts are good now, but longer shots still come up shorter that IRL. I have been using the RCT balls and have not done any significant analysis. But based on previous posts will switch over to the dots until RCT is formally adopted and do some deeper analysis and comparisons... Anyway, I would check with Flight Scope regarding your elevation changes, if you have to elevate your Mevo sounds like you will create a valley. Maybe try getting a laser level and from the hitting area point it to a vertical ruler where the Mevo sits to see just how low it is, if not already done.
