  • Flightscope x2 indoor spin wrong

My golf club has an indoor Bay for winter simulation. The launch monitor is a flightscope X2. I played on it quite a bit last winter and had very unsatisfactory results. I started using a metallic dot and and then bought a dozen RCT balls to see if that would help but the spin numbers are absolutely terrible regardless. I'm talking less than 50% showing measured spin and the shots that claim to have captured spin often times giving 5-6k driver readings and 2k wedge readings. The spin axis also seems to be a complete crap shoot.

Additionally the ball speed vs club speed is very poor. The unit nearly always indicates a 1.5 (sometimes better) smash Factor even on very poor strikes with the driver. It will just report a lower swing speed to compensate.

There might be a few problems with the setup and if it would help I can provide pictures at a later date. The first issue is it's inside what is essentially a metal pole barn. I have read this is not recommended but I have also read that as long as there is no metal in between the launch monitor and the impact screen that this should not be an issue. Would covering metal walls not in the path of the ball with some sort of absorptive material help?

There is approximately 10 feet behind and 15 feet in front of the ball before the screen when measuring. I know this is on the short side but should be adequate according to flightscope. The only other issue I can see is currently the unit sits on the floor and the mat is perhaps an inch to an inch and a half raised off the ground (add an additional inch or two for tee height). I have seen guides that say level ground between flightscope and hitting mat is a must but a small incline must be ok if the unit is going to pick up a teed up ball correctly. Regardless the mat and tee height is always calibrated for during setup and has not increased accuracy.

Is there anything I might be overlooking in the setup to get better spin readings or am I asking too much of a Doppler system using it in this environment?

If it was my personal gear I'd have already done some experimenting with the setup but because it belongs to my golf club id like to get some feedback before attempting modifications or taking the request for modification to the board member in charge.

    Thanks in advance.

I have a mevo+, not an X2 but what I would first do is make sure all firmware and soft ware is updated. Next I would contact Flightscope and discuss the issue with them. They would want to conduct feedback analysis on sessions. I believe there is or was a program that can identify environmental influences. With the mevo+ it’s ok for the unit to be lower than the hitting area. There is a setting in the software to allow for the increase mat height, what can cause an issue is if there is a valley between the unit and the hitting surface. Flightscope support was very helpful in helping me with my setup, hopefully they can assist you. Best of luck getting it sorted out.
