  • GC2 missing putts and chips

I have researched extensively here and other sites, I have spoken with FS multiple times, and have yet to find a solution to my problem so I figured it was time to reach out to everyone here for help.

My problem is that when I hit a putt or chip, probably 25% of putts and 10% of chips my GC2 will not read the shot. When this happens the flash is never triggered ( I can usually hear flash trigger at least on putts). I have seen rare shots that it couldn't read and the dashed lines are displayed I am ok with this as it is usually a weird shot, but this is not the case. I am placing the ball in the hitting area and the light turns green, but when I hit the shot the light just goes back to red as if I just picked the ball up.

As I have said I have spoken to FS several times and I have tried the following:
1: raising the GC2 above the mat.
2: removed everything from the background that could cause a glare.
3: painted the wall black that the GC2 facing.
4: bought a new black putter, was using an odyssey.
5: made sure my shoes didn't have any reflective material on them, changed shoes, I have even hit barefooted.
    6: I changed from firmware 4.0.0.15 to 3.10.
7: I tried swapping the super flash out with the spare (limited life) flash that came with the unit.
8: I have tried multiple brands of balls.
9: I moved the unit to a different area.

Not that it should make a difference but I am am left handed.

The only thing that seems to help at all is if I place the ball as far from the unit as possible in the hitting area. This is not an acceptable solution, I should be able to place it anywhere in the hitting area.

Sorry for the semi long post. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks to everyone in advance for any advice.

Have you tried cleaning the lens covers on the unit? Could just be dirty which could effect detection. It sounds like it's having an issue "seeing" the ball. The calibration utility might be worth a shot as well. Also, make sure there is no movement on the back swing. I've noticed with shot chips/putting on my mat it will lose the ball on the back swing because I'm a little frigidity with bouncing the club on the ground right before the backswing - if that makes sense?

one thing that you can do is use the callaway soccer balls, I see nothing on your lighting either that might be affecting the cameras from seeing the ball properly

My new gc2 won't even recognize a yellow and black truvis ball. Acts like it's not even there.

Thanks, I forgot to mention lighting. I have tried with lights on and off. I use LED recessed lights, but I figured if it misses with the lights off then they would not be the problem.

Yes that makes sense, I have tried lightly wiping the camera lens. I was told by FS that the calibration utility will not benefit the newer units as they self cal after every shot. Thanks.

take a pic of your setup with normal conditions and remember this that sometimes lighting will affect this, especially with wedges and putters as your body is over the ball and casting a different shadow over it as not with long irons or woods. Also are you using a protective case with the unit.

One more piece I forgot to mention is that I was going to return the unit to FS for them to check it out. They sent me a loaner to use while I sent mine back, before shipping mine out I tried the loaner and it was missing shots also. At that point I decided it was a waste of money to ship mine back if I had 2 units doing the same thing, so I shipped the loaner back. Now I do not know what to do.

I do have the plastic cover, and I have made sure the cover lines up, not blocking the camera lenses. I am not sure how lighting could be the issue if it misses with light on or off.

If it was happening with the loaner than it must be environmental. Can you try to reproduce in a different room on carpet or even outside? What mat do you have?

I think lincon is on the right thought the cameras are important but the flash is vital, I opened the port on my flash with the protective case as the super flash window is double the size of the plastic case

I would also remove the cover to rule that out.

I wondered about that. I was thinking I'd want to open that area up for that very reason.

I had this issue recently. I ended up raising my GC2 up higher. it was even or maybe .5 inches above the mat for a long time and recently had issues with putts and short chips very similar to what you describe. I actually thought it was my CCE mat because of the depressions it now has and just was dealing with it until I got a new mat. I ended up raising it pretty close to two inches above my mat and it has been better. Not sure its missed a shot in a week.

let me know how you make out or if you find something different.
