  • GCQ Initial Impression/Early Review

Anyone following the other thread I figured I would start a new one in case anyone wanted to get impressions without having to hear about the ordeal of a day I had

I got my GCQ on Wednesday but it was held at Fed ex for a day so I received the unit last night. I spent most of last night and nearly alll day today getting the software set up. the Quad only runs on FSX version 3.0 which is a Beta for now (soon to be released). The engineers at Foresight were amazing today and patiently worked on things remotely until I could get it running.

First impressions is that it is beautiful! The case and the display are amazing. The backlight it helpful but in daylight you can read it well. Ergonomically its easy to carry especially coming from a GC2/HMT. If you never move your unit around this is likely less of an issue, but I will be using mine at my club and at home. Some folks thought it looked big from my first photos but the GC2 was a foot behind it so the depth of field was wrong. I'm including new photos (hopefully they work as I did what another member suggested and scaled them down on my laptop as my iphone 7s files are too large)

Its very fast to boot up and the extended ball capture is a huge deal, especially if you go from driving off a tee to hitting off the turf. My 5x5 country club elite mat is really worth it now as I can use most of it instead of a small strip.

Accuracy is amazing. Ball data is right there with Trackman. I took the unit to my pro early this am and we tested them head to head. Ball data was spot on. Club data is better than on Trackman. Club head speed in spot on as are smash factor (Trackman tracks club speed after the ball is hit so the club head speed is always slower, but ball speed is accurate, giving false elevated smash. Impact point is perfect (tested with contact tape)

One of the best new features is the alignment stick. Anyone who has fiddled with GCS/HMT knows its easy to be off a few degrees which screws up your numbers. That is all but gone and ball flight is exactly where they should be feel wise and numbers wise since you are literally setting your target line. This is really great when playing on FSX courses.

FSX 3.0: WOW, detail is much improved especially on 4K. Its more responsive than 2.4 by a lot, not much change on driving range except there is a new shot viewer where you can see your averages etc on the side of the driving range without having to go into the info page. Courses are more clear with better graphics all around (all upgraded to 1.8 version)

Downsides: Yes there are some of those too. Especially being an early adopter. Im having the same issues with lots of my smart home stuff and my self driving Tesla so to be expected. However, the connection issue is a bit of a mess. They have the Quad set up to connect via Wifi, ethernet and USB 3.0 . One of the techs says it also has bluetooth but its not turned on yet. The problem is FSX requires a internet connection to be active and your computer if using wifi (like mine is) can't accept two wifi connections. The same is true with ethernet. Either the wifi is on or the ethernet is on. See the problem? One of the engineers said you can use both but we couldn't get it to work. They understand the issues and I'm confident they will get it working soon. Thus for the time being only USB 3.0 will work and the cable that comes with the unit is small so I had to get a powered extender. Anyway, It was a bit of a PITA today but Im happy now.

Anyway, thats all for now, outdoor impressions on the course to come if we get some sun this weekend..Take care..

Very nice.. I'll never be able to afford it but glad you like it. If I got one those I'd definitely be getting a divorce, since I had to buy my gc2 behind her back anyways. Lol. But very nice indeed..

RCorsa. Can you please elaborate further on FSX graphics compared to previous version. You mentioned 4K. Do you have 4K projector? Thank you.

Glad you are enjoying it and your liking the way its performing for you I would have mine if it was not limited to just FSX, I hope they get this figured out with the third party software in the near future as the GCQ would be a nice addition, and has a lot of potential, have fun with it for sure.

Awesome! And definitely get a much better perspective on the actual size of it the with the ps4 case. Didn't know this thing had headlights on it too, that's crazy. It looks super slick.

Looks awesome, I'm glad you finally got it up and running. Bluetooth would be so much easier... On a side note what driver are you using? I can't ever get my spin that low

I stopped by RCorsa's house today and the quad is extremely nice. It's solidly built, looks fantastic and I just can't get over the auto target line adjustment. RC's got an awesome setup to boot. I'm happy for you man, enjoy!

I'm torn between a GCQ and Trackman 4. Currently a GC2 owner. Any thoughts? Great review, if GCQ comes with Star Wars then its a no brainer!

would the new flightscope X3 be in the same league as GCQ/trackman 4 ?...i haven't heard much about it being a option . seems it would be good for lefty/righty setup

If money not an issue I would think T4 would get the nod. It appears from early reviews both with accurate ball and club data. What favors T4: a) left and right handed sim play; b) many third party software options. Based on Foresight new LMs they appear to want to eliminate third pary software. Many options with TM: E6, JNPG, and I believe TGC.

This brings up an interesting point with the FSX lockdown. Taking away consumer options will cost you sales.

The goal is maximizing profits, not sales. The optimum strategy depends on the product and market.

2 big issues about on that decision. First is left vs right hand play. It's a non issue with TM. I'd be interested to hear if you can do it with the Quad given the bigger field of view. Second is software. With the quad you have all of 1 option and with the TM it's E6 or JNPG as far as I know. That's an issue.

Don't mind me, I'm a bit slow, I'll just mosey on through hahaha. Well there are some sort of cool headlights on the top of it for a reason I'm not sure why then

he is just lighting up his ball area for better reads, this is not part of the gcq

Thank you for the advice. I should mention it will primarily be indoor use only. I'm leaning more and more toward TM4.

Wigalo great meeting you too. Let's definitely get out and play some real golf soon.

Good comments all around. Yes the lights are dirrected LEDs that light the ball hitting area up without shining in my eyes and allows to keep the hitting area dark enough for outstanding graphics and contrast on the hitting screen. My sim bay is totally enclosed and I find elevated spot lights are distracting.

With the quad you can do left and right handed golfers by just hitting a button.

As far as getting a quad or a trackman 4 they are both excellent. Trackman numbers are not as good indoors as spin rates are estimated (which is why you need at least 16-18 feet of ball flight for it to work). We found that the quad and trackman are similar except spin rates are higher with TM and club head speed is slower (measures after ball contact so club is slowing).

If you are going to use outdoors you have to remember there is also no display so you'll need to bring an iPad if you take it on the go to the range.

Financially I addition to being $7000 more upfront, Trackman also has a $2000/year service fee. My pro says this drives him crazy as he has 8 Trackman units ($16,000/ year). For those that winge about foresight business practice they all want a pound of flesh. Also the TM trade in policy is a total joke. They offered him $2500 for one of his Tm3 units in trade for another $25k Trackman 4. Of course I offered him $3000 no questions asked so I could have both (jk)

Honestly I considered both (without really the cost factoring into it) this time and for the indoor superiority, added display, better club data (including face contact) and the alignment tool I chose GCQ. Obviously both are great units.

You need a big area for the TM4, as it needs about 15ft from ball to screen for it to see the shot, plus the TM4 needs to be about 10ft behind the hitting position in the first place. You'd have to check the exact numbers - but they seemed quite far to me.

I was out at my pro getting a lesson on a freezing snowy day a couple of weeks ago and suggested him getting an indoor net / screen, rather than hitting out into the range with his roller door open. When we worked out the space needed, it meant you'd need ludicrous amounts of height... as hitting irons from that distance would go pretty high!
