  • Replacement flash circuit board

I first want to thank Tretee from the other forum for his help troubleshooting and everyone who has worked on ways to refurbish GC2 flashes. When I saw that the superflash price was way more than I would want to pay when my flash eventually burns out, I went ahead and designed my own circuit board since I didn't have a spare. I followed goatbarn instructions for taking apart the housing which are here.
As I posted awhile back the flash module is really easy to disassemble with a heat gun and a utility knife. I finally got around to replacing the xenon flash

Once you get the case apart once, it is easy to swap out circuit boards as many times as you want. I'm not sure how long my circuit board assembly will last, but I have the 3.5.1 firmware with the flash counter so I can at least track it. I played a round this evening and did not have a single missed shot. To be totally upfront, I'm not trying to claim that this is as good as the superflash. I am using the same $6 tube ($13 for shipping it) that is referenced in the thread above, plus a trigger coil off aliexpress. All I am claiming is that the performance should be comparable to refurbishing one of your old flashes according to the tutorial and that this would be easier if you don't feel comfortable soldering.

Is a circuit board assembly like this something that other people here would be interested in? Replacing it still has some DIY element of getting the case apart, but at least you wouldn't have to wait several weeks for the xenon tubes to come from overseas or do any soldering. If there is enough interest, I would go ahead and get a run of circuit boards made and order a larger batch of components to save on shipping costs. A pricing structure that I was thinking of would be something like this.

Assembled replacement circuit board: one for $40, two for $75, three for $100 (including shipping to the US)
Opening old flash case: You pay for shipping it to me plus $10 fee for opening it

So if you didn't want to do anything, you would send me your burnt out flash and $50 and I would open the case and replace the circuit board.

It took about 3 weeks last time for me to get the flash tubes, so these could potentially be ready to ship in about a month.

andygg1986 Just checked my flash after reading your comment. What do you know i actually have a super flash from my GC2 bought at golfsmith. I guess I won't be needing the spare circuit board anymore if anyone is interested I'll send it to you for the same $40.

I also have a regular spare flash from foresight, does anyone know if that will still work with my GC2 after being modified for a super flash ?

The spare flash will still work. I bought my gc2 new, and it also came with the spare flash which I have tried.

docsmilez : Is it convenient to post a photo of the super flash or its board? Kind of curious with what one looks like, not that I'll ever want to get one. My first one (a regular one from 2014) is still working after 30+ months. FS may have only adjusted something very slightly to create the current superflash.

If anyone wants one of these I have not opened mine and will ship it to you for $40 as well. Please PM or email me at ali7098@gmail.com

bk1106 don't think I want to risk opening it up or messing with it but there is a video on YouTube from foresight that shows it (don't have a pic on me now/ too lazy). After 30 months of regular use I wonder if yours is a super flash. Seems like most people are getttong 12-24 months from a regular flash. Obviously it all depends on use.

The super flash wasn't out 30 months ago.

I don't have a superflash, but I found these pictures online for comparison of the two. If anyone ever has a superflash that dies, I would love to see what is inside.

andygg1986 would it be worth it to have a group of forum members (myself included) purchase a superflash for you to disassemble and try to recreate the board and what not so we could all be running super flashes, but not going through Foresight? Just an idea.. not sure of the logistics so maybe it's not feasible.

The biggest problem that I can see with that is my GC2 is pretty old. I have read somewhere that only the newer ones will work with the superflash, so I couldn't test new designs without sending mine in for an upgrade which would be around $100. Even if I did send it in, $500 is a fair amount of money and I don't know for sure that it can be duplicated. For all I know, Foresight may have an exclusive contract for custom flash tubes. I have contacted several flash tube manufacturers about doing a custom tube that would be more durable, and haven't had any luck finding someone to do it.

In principle I like the idea of everyone having access to a cheaper superflash, but I don't feel confident enough that it could be done to ask other people to risk their money buying one to take apart.

Fair enough, just figured if it could be done, I would definitely be willing to chip in to get a super flash for you to reverse engineer. I also don't really care to upgrade my GC2 if it isn't compatible with the superflash. I would need to pay the $500 transfer fee plus the $100 for the upgrade. If it ever becomes an option though I'm all in!!!

I have issues with wedge shots. It drives me insane. If the ball is not at the top left of the FOV I get a ton of no reads. I replaced the flash with a new one. Still happened. I tried different lighting. Still happens. I called Foresight and they said "you need the super flash". I'm ready to buy one. I ordered Andy's flash and will see if that's better. It's bizarre. I never have a no read on any shot other than a 100 wedge where the ball is not at the top left of the FOV.

Have you tried different relative elevation between GC2 and ball? I remember that having GC2 looks down onto the ball is preferred. FS' suggestion was not helpful, there were a good 6-7 years of normal flash working perfectly before superflash came on the scene in (late) 2016.

It looks like it would be about the same amount as Europe. Add $5 to the prices and it will just go first class us postal service which might take a couple of weeks.

I got my flash from Andy today. I hit 50 shots and I'm a happy customer.

I'm inquiring for future reference on a supply of a cheaper flashes. I'd be willing to donate this flash for R&D purposes if it does crap out and is a super flash. I bought the unit used from Foresight Canada.

Mine is 1/2" x 7/8" so that must be a superflash. Be sure to let me know if it dies because I would love to take it apart!

Is there any way to tell how many flashes have been used. I've heard of a flash counter, but thought it no longer is available.

I think firmware 3.5 is the last one that has a counter on it. Not sure if it works with a superflash though

    • #56
Do you still have any of these available, Andy? Just had my flash go out in the middle of a round with friends last night and don't want to wait weeks for bulbs to come in. I would be in for 3 if they're available. Thanks!

Great. Just sent payment via Paypal for 3 boards. I'm still on 3.5 firmware and play pretty regularly, so I should be able to get you some feedback.
