    HMT 1 Dot Question

Have you guys experimented with the location of the dot? I had 4 Dots on and it was only reading as 1 dot so I peeled all but the top toe dot off and the readings stayed the same. My thing is I don’t like the dot in the middle of the club and don’t mind it top toe. Anyone know if having it on the toe matters?

I don't KNOW but with what the one dot is reading I don't know why it would matter. The HMT reading the 1 dot when there are 4 is the issue I started having with mine. It ended up being the LED arrays needing to be replaced. It's about a $500 or so repair. DId you get yours second hand? Seems like this is a wear and tear part but they don't advertise that now do they. The thing that drives me nuts is the "refurbished" ones they are selling don't have the arrays replaced. Anyway....

The HMT is fine. I bought it new from Foresight. The stickers wear off and then it reads 1 dot. The instructions say middle but the readings are the same on the toe. I prefer 1 dot on the toe. 4 is hard to look at.

I would think that having it on the toe is just going to give you slightly higher club head speed readings due to the rotation through impact (the toe moves faster than the heel). Any other path calculations should be essentially the same as the middle of the club unless you had some really crazy release going on. I think I saw an article on trackman that showed the raw output from the radar and it could differentiate the speed of the toe from the hotel but the difference is something on the order of 1 mph.

Yeah, that is a good point. Pretty negligible though.

Trackman says on average there is a 14% difference between heel and toe. Heel and toe being defined as 3/4 inch from center. The difference further out towards the heel or toe would be even greater. So a heel shot of 100 mph would have the toe moving at 114 mph.

It's not just the closing rate of the toe but also the greater distance from "grip to toe" vs "grip to heel" that causes the difference.

Bottomline it isn't negligible. I don't know what the HMT measures.

Also Trackman references CHS to the center for SF reasons. I don't know what the HMT CHS is referenced to (ie if their SF is directly comparable.)

I would expect the HMT is measuring d/t=s since it is measure a dot. At the end of the day does the actual number matter? You can compare apples/apples per club and that is the measure that matters. Ideally you'll use the manufacturers recommendations to get the most accurate data but it's up to the user on how they want to use the tool. I don't think moving it out towards the toe will mess you up too much unless you are comparing the numbers to what you got in the middle. Obviously, I haven't tested this so it's just speculation.

Even comparing the new toe numbers with the previous center numbers may not mess anything up *if* the HMT references CHS to the center.

I'm assuming the HMT knows where the stickers are but I really don't know how the HMT measures or references things (does anyone? ) so it is all speculation.

I think it matters when people (including Foresight reps) are trying to compare their product with TM and trying to ask how TM can be so far off from their device and arguing that TM must be wrong. It’s things like this that everyone must keep in mind when trying to compare one unit from another

This is pretty easy to test so I did. I just used an old 4 iron. The difference from heel to toe was around 4mph so centre to toe would be around 2pmh. That's with clubhead speeds around 94mph. Smash was more effected as it was 1.5 on heel and 1.43 on toe.

Interesting that HMT reads like Trackman. I thought they measure club speed a little differently. Also, I noticed 1 dot when 4 dots didn’t get measured correctly even though it had all 4 dots.

If you only see a 1 dot reading with 4 dots occasionally it probably means you are getting a reflection. If the system sees more than 4 it will fall back to the 1 dot reading. If you always get 1 dot or nothing your LED arrays probably need to be replaced.

Or the stickers are shot. They don’t last forever when used in dirt

Yes, that is a good point. If you are having mis-reads change your dots as a first step in troubleshooting.

How long do these HMT dots lasts in your opinion and what do you do to maximize its life ? After my actual rounds obviously the clubs get dirty (wedges esp) but seems like changing dots after every round is going to cost a lot. Any advice ?

They last quite a while. I’ve got 12 rounds outside on my current ones.
