  • GC2 and range balls

I predominantly use my GC2 for sim golf but since I am getting my garage ready for my new impact screen I decided to take the GC2 to my local driving range.

I was hitting a lot of drives but noticed that most were only going 230 yards carry. On my fr1 software my drives regularly carry 260-270 yards.

Are range balls designed to carry less? I was really pounding my driver...

    Strange....

not all range balls are the same, some range balls are flight limited, some are not. and even the flight limited ones could be 80% or 50% limited flight, i always keep a few old normal balls in my bag for the range to hit if i want to be confident that the carry and spin numbers are correct, usually i'm just working on ball flight and strike at the range, i wouldn't do gap testing with range balls.

Thanks Tommy. I was actually testing out a new driver I had been lent so probably not the best place to test numbers. I'll have to get my home simulator back up and running so I can test with proper golf balls!

Just for kicks, here's a golf digest article on range ball distances. The big takeaway is they can be very inconsistent if very old. https://www.golfdigest.com/story/gd-tested-range-balls

I think Mark Crossfield did a video on this a number of years ago.

I am thinking of buying $30 worth of premium refurb balls and hitting them on the range vs range balls. I was told that limited flight range balls do have shorter and lower distance. I definitely felt that my carry was about 10yds shorter whenever I used range balls.
