  • FSX 2018 on PC in Other Room

Are any forum members running FSX 2018 from a computer in another room? I have a centralized server room in my basement that is about 70’ away from my soon-to-be sim and I would like to put the PC there. The reason for doing this is to take advantage of infrastructure already in place in that room (UPS units, stereo receivers for speakers I will use, etc.) and to keep a clean setup.

My launch monitor will be a GCQuad. I was thinking I would run HDMI over CAT6 using some HDMI baluns/extenders to get video to the projector and maybe use a USB-over-Ethernet extender to put a wireless USB receiver close to the sim for a keyboard and mouse. I realize I would need another HDMI-over-Ethernet run if I wanted to use a second monitor for shot data. This also makes adding swing cameras much more challenging (would need more USB runs).

Has anyone else done this or considered it? I have never used FSX 2018 (or really any other sim software), so I would appreciate any advice before I get in too deep. Can the GCQuad work reliably over WiFi or is it much preferred to be wired with Ethernet?

I have a very similar setup, just quite as long. I used 60 foot optical HDMI cable from mono price worked fine. But hdbase is another way to go. I use the USB over Ethernet and it works fine. I have my quad hard wired would not trust WiFi personally

Thanks for the response. I suppose I could hard wire the GCQ, but I was trying to avoid an ethernet cable running along the floor. I have an ethernet jack behind my projector screen, but I don't have turf covering the entire floor so the wire won't look so good. I will give wireless a try and switch to ethernet if the performance and reliability is not acceptable.

Has anyone tried using the Air Keyboard App with an iPad instead of using a physical keyboard and mouse? I see that many users on this forum have done this for TGC, but I was curious if anyone has built a custom keyboard layout for FSX 2018.

I’ve thought about doing something similar but closer and haven’t. You definitely want your quad wired as the wifi seems to constantly lose connection to FSX, even though it doesn’t lose it to the computer for some reason. Maybe it’s just my quad, but I just tried it again the other day. Also, fairground seems to work best over usb and you’ll need usb to update the firmware, so you may as well just run it. Yes, cams will be difficult. You could try some fiber usb cables but they get pricey that long. I have this one in a 30’ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...e?ie=UTF8&th=1

Please let us know how it works out.

I have my PC is a media closet so it isn't in the room. I'm using wifi but I've had to run an antenna cable through the the wall to get a solid connection to the Quad but it works fine.

For cameras I'm using gigE cameras and they work fine. They are not as fast a USB3 cameras though. With cameras you are going to have trade offs no matter what. Hopefully in the near future we will start to see 10gigE cameras at affordable prices.

That is likely the direction I'm going since I have a closet right on the other side of the wall. I moved everything to the other side of the room (where the closet is) and just laying everything out trying to get used to it. I looked at GigE cams but yeah, they seem much slower. I'd rather just buy the Fiber USB cables, but I really just hope FS gets support for IDS to make my life easier. I've been using a crappy ebay cam for FSX lately because it works but would rather just have one cam in the back and not two! Still need to figure out a couple other things though too.
