New owner, what’s your most efficient practice routine?

Hey guys, new owner and excited but it seems daunting to get lost in the rabbit hole that is FSX. Just wanted to hear anyone’s current routines on how they most efficiently practice. My space is limited so hybrid/driving iron is as much as I can hit over the next few months until I get outside.

I plan on picking a par 3 and trying short game distance shots and knowing my bag carry distances (which I’ve done on a Trackman anyway) as well as trying inside 6 feet game and the glass house. The putting seems very odd to me to try and make realistic bc I don’t have a current club membership to judge green speed and to coordinate etc. I would rather hold off on playing courses since I’m limited off the tee bc of space.

    Thanks!

^^Good timing I guess for this indoor practice post as it’s currently snowing several inches in the northeast!

I can’t hit my driver indoors either. Ceilings not quite high enough to really stretch out, but also just way too loud. So I use a 2H or grip down on a 3W and just play shorter tees, or play back tees and hit longer approaches into Par 4s.

I use the practice range when I’m trying technique changes, want certain data or to move through the bag. And then I pick certain holes (like CDA 14 or Pebble 17) to practice iron tee shots.

You will get used to the putting and most likely find it will improve your strike (is quite accurate in terms of putting line). Distance/depth gauging is a real challenge in FSX so you just learn to hit the distance by number.

I've had the GC2 and FSX for about 3 weeks. I start each session by going to the range and hitting a few chips then 50% wedge shots then 75% wedge shots then full wedge shots. Then I go to my custom skills challenge which is copied off the Trackman Combine. Then I do the Monthly Skills Challenge, Closest to the pin, Long Drive Contest, finally I end by playing 18 holes.

I am seriously considering never playing golf in person ever again, that is how much I love this thing.

Apologies for digging up an old thread… Im intrigued by your custom skills challenge for a Trackman Combine-like test. Did you manage to create a scoring system / proximity points system that makes the results comparable with a real Trackman combine test?

If you have access to the custom rules in the xml file, would be great if you could share!

Good to know. Thank you. And keep the computer aiming on putting straight at the flag and just hit the ball on your line essentially?

Love this. Did the Trackman Combine twice this winter and I think it really helped. Saw what I was deficient in even though the handicap was actually spot on to the number and then worked on all my carry distances and the dreaded 50-70 yard shots, and one month later added 3 points to it.

I REALLY wish they had something better than the FSX Skills and it correlates to handicap go show improvement. Doesn’t even SkyTrak have that?!

+1 on skills, but you can also make your own skills challenge for the distances you need to work on. Also, the last one says driver, but you only need to hit it 200 so keep that in mind. Use whatever club works.

Also, if you like par 3s, you can make your own course consisting of whatever your favorite par 3s are (as long as you own the courses). One course that I like for that is the pitch & putt course. Also, Longleaf is a good course because it has so many tees, including a very short one (which makes it great to play with kids because you can select long and short tees for diff players).

            Have fun!

Thanks! Just tried all these suggestions and it was great. Feel like I got a lot of practice. Seeing the ball data launch angle and spin on my wedge work is fantastic. Can’t wait until I can see it on the HMT that will be here next week.

Only annoying thing was the Inside 6. It gave me so many shots on one silly hole that was 215 yards away. I thought it was going to I be short game stuff? I guess I will be stuck on level one for a while...

Inside 6 feet has an issue in 2020 for Blue Bayou. You'll see what it's supposed to be like when they fix it, but it is fantastic and amazing for your game. Just not so amazing when you need to make a chip shot go 200 yards. I think someone said they were teeing off from the water on one BB hole.

You'll have to wait on that one.

Interesting. So do I have to buy other courses to play them so I can do another level? It won’t let me go onto the next level and I am stuck at 200-215 yards for Level 1....

Just play inside 6 feet for an hour every day and watch strokes magically disappear from your handicap.
