    The rough on FSX courses

    I have 11 courses

The rough on Celtic Manor is great because sometimes you get `lie penalty` and sometimes you get `flier chance`.

However on every other course (inc Emirates Doral Linfield Blue Bayou, Pebble Beach Wentworth) you get `flier chance ` every time.

Basically this means that there is no course management, just hit the ball as far as you can on the latter courses.

Also I would welcome peoples thoughts on the `lie penalty` Is it too harsh? If I`ve got 100 yards to the green, I am having to hit a 150 yard club to get to the green. That`s pretty unrealistic.

Yeah, I've found that it depends on the course for whether you get a lie penalty or flier chance. Some of the lie penalties are extreme and some of the flier results are unrealistic, but you get used to it. It all seems to even out with the score in the end even if it is frustrating. The 50% fairway bunker penalties are the ones that bug me the most. Most lie penalties I've found are more like 12-130 yards for a 100 yard shot. Unless you mean the Severe Lie Penalties...

Severe Lie Penalty seems to have been largely taken out of the 3.0 version courses. I think I've only seen it once (and I don't hit it *that* straight...).

I have not figured out quite what Lie Penalty now means. Sometimes it seems to only take off around 10-15% of carry distance; other times it seems harsher than that. This may be intentional - it does add a level of uncertainty which I guess is fair and realistic. But you can't see how bad the lie is and make a judgment, it's basically hit and hope.

I also don't like the fairway bunker penalties -- too severe in many cases, and you can't really tell how close you are to the lip so how long a club you can safely hit. Overall it seems to take off around 35-40% of carry distance. No big deal for greenside bunkers but it means you can basically never hit it more than about 140 yards from a fairway bunker, which is unfortunate.

Yeah, not being able to actually see how bad the lie is a miss in the software - I thought that would be obvious to include.
I wouldn't want to know how badly the lie will affect the shot as in TGC2019, but some kind of visual indicator make sense.
Hopefully they add it at some point.
Other option is to just turn off lie penalties.

you can see how bad your lie is if you use the green contour view. If your ball is completely buried in the rough it is seeming more like around 20% penalty. If there is a bit of the ball above the grass it's more like 10%. More ball than that and it appears to a flier chance. Some of the tall grasses seem to be acting more like trees where your shot will bounce off of them. Like the fescue on Prairie Dunes. Very weird. Note, to the the 3D grass lie you'll need your graphics set to balanced or Full Graphics.

I find the lie penalty occurs when I am in the heavy rough or sand and possible flier lie happens in the first cut of rough.

It's more realistic than TGC 2019, but I think the penalties are a little too severe and the fliers are a little too long.

I have to correct my note above saying Severe Lie Penalty has been disabled in 3.0 versions. I had a bit of a wild round today on Carnoustie and felt like I was in it off the tee every other hole. And, it was knocking off seemingly about 40-60% off shots. I could not predict how much. But, very severe. Drive into that and you are happy to escape with bogey. It's significantly more penal than hitting in fairway bunkers. I made 5 doubles today which is pretty unusual for me. Poor!!

But, as in real life. If you drive it into the dunes at Carnoustie you are not getting away with par. Hard to complain too much. But Carnoustie 3.0 is very tough indeed.

I agree the fairway bunker lie penalties are ridiculous.

Ya I also agree that I can't stand the Fairway bunker penalties. They are ridiculous. You could be like 170 out in a fairway bunker and no chance to get there. I have been doing some testing and when 100yds out it takes about a 160yd shot to get there and that's including the run not carry. So you need fairway running up to the green can't carry it that far for sure. Wish they would change that. I like to play with lie penalties on and still do just make sure and not go in any fairway bunkers.
