    TGC2019 ball physics vs. FSX

TGC 2019 has less curvature in the ball flight than FSX. Originally i thought TGC was wrong. But then I read somewhere that TGC takes into account something called spin decay (basically ball spins less once it’s airborne for some time) and thus ball flight is actually more realistic. Now I’m confused. Does anyone know which is reflecting more real flight curve?

I have heard this, but haven’t personally noticed a big difference in the two.

Can you (we) run the applications side-by-side to confirm if the results are different? Eg one showing on the projector and one on the monitor

I kinda struggle with this “doesn’t account for spin decay” thing. In practice, spin reduces at a rate of about 4% per second of ball flight, super simple to implement, so I can’t get why they wouldn’t just dial it down over the duration of the shot. Maybe FS have a different view on spin decay to others

I’ll give it a try. I don’t have projector but do have a monitor. The issue though is I had a hard time getting the apps to run on my monitor while using it as a second display. Meaning I don’t know how to run two apps side by side. Will do some research but if you know please tell me how to set it up. Worst case I can take some shots with similar spin and ball speed on two apps and send screen shots of those.

Yeh, I’ll give it a go on the weekend too. I think in theory it should work, assuming windows can multi-task the two applications on separate screens. Have never had the need to try, so don’t know about that.

Have certainly seen people test GC2 and ST side-by-side, but they could be running different PCs/laptops.

It should run both applications at once on separate monitors, the big question in this experiment is will the GC2 send numbers to TGC 2019 and FSX at the same time?

It will if you run FSX off of usb and TGC off Bluetooth

            That’s basically what I’m saying.

On the Quad, GQSX is only supposed to “listen” to the wifi signal, so barring some technical blocker, I think it should be pushed to both FSX and GQSX (hopefully).

On the GC2, andy’s comment makes sense providing the GC2 pushes the data to both comms devices (USB and bluetooth) simultaneously.

Ok here is a few curvy shots. as you guys can tell, FSX calculates a lot more offline than TGC2019

Maybe TGC is showing offline distance when it lands and FSX includes bounce and roll? That would get them a lot closer

Yeh isn’t offline in FSX the final ball position, as opposed to offline carry?

Hmm... I thought TGC is also final offline rather than carry? If it’s the carry then I think they are about right. That said I do feel like when I hook my shots when playing on a course on TGC I Still hit the fairways quite often. Not sure if anyone else feels the same. No scientific way to prove it though coz I can’t measure the width of fairway.

Sorry Alex Ma I wasn’t very clear. What I mean is we can only compare carry distances between the two - straight and offline - as total distance will be affected by modelled assumptions for collisions forces (with the ground) and rollout, which are unlikely to be to be the same.

I’m not sure what TGC is showing, probably total offline as you said, but we can’t reliably compare that to FSX. I think the FS performance app gives offline carry distance, that might be another way of comparing the two if there is a way of confirming the same in TGC.

Also interesting that the straight carry numbers in your examples aren’t always that close either. 3yds difference over 224yds is nothing, but 5yds over 127yds is pretty material if you ask me.

Oh yeah TGC carry is definitely different. Usually higher, especially on low spin shots.

So I played on the course yesterday for the first time in two months. The ball flights were a lot closer to TGC2019 than FSX. On FSX I have a lot of snap hooks but not as bad in TGC. On course yesterday they were going relatively straight.

Maybe at a certain amount of L/R spin axis GC2/GCQ becomes a bit unreliable. The spin decay issue people refer to would make some sense in that the ball just keeps pulling further left or right when it should be straightening out.

Didn't play FSX and TGC at the same time but I played 18 holes on FSX then played 18 holes on TGC 2019 immediately afterwards. The shot shapes and distances were night and day different.

FSX was showing draws and fades where TGC was showing pulls and pushes. I seem to be about 20 yards longer carry on FSX with driver. Irons seemed to be slightly longer on TGC. Pitches and chips seemed about the same.

Something else I noticed, TGC seems a lot darker than FSX.

That’s weird. Pretty much the exact opposite of my experience. Wayward shots in FSX are in fairway or in the rough on TGC.

As far as distance goes, Irons are generally a bit longer on TGC. Drivers are strange. Seems like relatively low spin shots are awarded more on TGC, meaning shots spinning 2000-2500 rpm carry longer in TGC. However, ultra low spin shots (less than 2000) carry shorter on TGC, which i find more realistic because they dont get airborne as much.

As for as darkness goes, maybe. But that’s just graphics design I guess.

Sry time of day in TGC to noon and clouds to none or light cloud. Some designers create courses darker to look better on a Monitor. You can also run Reshade to set things how you want them. I don’t play on anything but noon and no or light cloud.

Totally agree. I have found TGC default is often mid or late afternoon lighting, not bright enough. I set TGC and FSX to 10am/mid-morning.
