How do your scores on FSX compare to your scores in real life? Haven't been on a real life course since using FSX. Bonus points for people who have played courses in real life and on the sim.

I am probably 8 strokes better on FSX. Still killing me that this difference exists! But, my explanations are:- I make few double-bogeys on FSX. Other than the courses where you have real tree problems or Severe Lie Penalty (Carnoustie, Valderrama), I can mostly get down with bogey even with a really wild shot. No lost balls, unplayable lies.
- I use 6-foot gimmes, always. I make fewer 7-12 foot putts on FSX than I do in real life. But I rarely 3-putt in FSX. I think the balance is in my favor, overall.
- Up-and-downs are easier in FSX, mainly because I am always playing from a flat lie. I'm thinking at least 50/50 chance of getting up and down from 20-30 yards on FSX, including bunkers. I am not that good in real life.

I concur with delaloi's assessment. I am a high handicapper and find that I shoot about 8-10 strokes better on the simulator. I also use 6' gimmes, which certainly saves a couple of strokes, but the biggest differences are the ability to get close out of greenside bunkers and never having the unpredictability of a poor lie in the rough or playing on uneven ground. I am usually good for 2-3 totally wasted shots per round on the course that I rarely have on the simulator. Friends of mine that are better golfers have less of a differential on the sim, but still 5-6 strokes.Comment

My variance is lower but I use auto putt. I don’t find putting as a necessity as much as others and it helps the game go much faster. I mean, let’s face it, if you had 6 foot gimmes in real life your scores would be much lower so not really a fair comparison. I get a little miffed when it gives me 1.5 for some 6 foot putts due to the terrain but it all works out. I thought the decimal score would lessen my experience but it really hasn’t after I played a round or 2.Comment

Sand is definately an advantage in the sim vs real life. I actually prefer the lie penalty out of the rough vs flier lies as the lie penalty is more predictable.
Fairway bunkers are a huge penalty as I can see 100 yards less on a shot where in real life that wouldn't happen.
I have gotten used to putting in FSX and actually enjoy it. Only complaint is way too many lipouts than in real life.
Can't wait to get out on a real course and see how close my scores are to FSX.Comment

I've found that if you have the penalties enabled and you actually putt (can do 3 ft gimmies) that even though play may not be exactly the same, your scores will be similar.Comment

Funny thing, my putting in real life is much better now that I don't putt on the sim. Plus auto-putt puts a premium on hitting it close. I'll never go back.Comment

Last 3 rounds on FSX 78,73,69
Last 3 rounds in RL, 95,92,89
Biggest differences:
6ft gimme's
poor lies in RL (including sloped lies)
Chipping
Bunker play
pressure
time between shots (easier to get into a rhythm on the sim)
My handicap had dropped a lot and I was scoring better in RL, but it's going up again, ironically as my sim play is improving a lot.

Yeah, I don't agree. Change the settings on FSX to match, get used to what a 10 foot putt on the sim is and bring it to the course.
You need to make your sim game help you, not give you a false sense of scoring.
How many putts per round are you averaging out of curiosity? Where are you losing strokes when playing RL?
My own hdc jumped up a bit when I started playing too many rounds instead of practicing things. I was a 7 and now high 9. Averaging under 30 putts per round and mainly losing my strokes on the approach (which is more what I used to practice, because that was always my main loser). -
Averaging under 30 putts is absolutely amazing baller. You either don't hit many gir or are absolutely a magician with the flat blade. I'm usually 31-32 average. I don't get many rounds in the 20s.

Haha, yeah, it comes and goes but I think I found it for good this time. I’ve been on fire and it’s not just at my home club. Playing Spyglass Wednesday. So we’ll see what I do there. I love those fast slopey greens but ya never know how it’s gonna go. And yes, my gir is a big issue and my wedges are good. Have not broken 80 much lately though.Comment

I have not been a fan of putting on FSX. But I have worked on my putting stroke outside the sim this year, and it is absolutely certain that I have become a better putter on the sim because of it. A couple of years ago I would often play a full round on the sim without holing a single putt (with 6-foot gimmes). Now I usually hole at least a couple. I do think sim putting can be beneficial practice for real-life in terms of tempo and distance control, as well as hitting your start line.
I may try turning off the gimmes and see how it goes.Comment

Yep - practice putting on real greens or get a home green. I suppose if a person is a very mechanical putter that dials in distances based on backswing and follow through lengths they can practice on a sim, but I am more of a feel putter, seeing how hard I need to hit it.
