I think most agree the FSX 2020 software graphics are well below par, but has anyone tried it with a 4K projector? If so is there one projector they recommend? Thank you

I have not, but have wondered the same. If you look at the pictures on Foresight, they look tremendous. For example:

The version 3.0 courses, with Reshade, look pretty good IMO. But not *this* good, on my system. -
Seems to look good in 4K if you’re using a nice big screen (eg 16ft x 9ft or bigger). More pixels, more definition over a large area.
Overall though, impact screens just don’t produce a brilliant image like movie screens, so I don’t think you really get the full benefit of 4K with golf sim.Comment

I agree about the screen. I have an optoma 1920x1280. When I was building the system I projected it on a plain white painted wall and it looked fantastic, so much that I thought seriously about dropping $20K on a 4K projector until somebody mentioned the impact screen effect. I use the a premium impact screen from Carls, and whilst its great for absorbance it really impacts the picture. The difference is impact screens are highly woven materials and not flat like a movie projection screen. All that texture creates optical specular effects and really hits the picture quality.
Until somebody builds an optically perfect high resolution impact screen I think 4K is overkill. I truly believe there would be a large market for a really high quality impact screen (optically)Comment

Faux 4K is the way to go. Get a pixel shifting laser PJ for the 4K effect. I can confirm it does make a difference. I recently upgraded to a refurbished Epson Pro L1100UNL with separate short throw lens and could not be happier with the setup! All in I it was like $3.5k including the PJ ceiling mount. I would also recommend that if you have a second monitor hooked up on a mirroring mode that the monitor is also a 4K monitor or the pixel shift won’t work appropriately.Comment

Resolution matters with our impact screen size. They are larger than most home theaters. "DVD" quality is not defeated by the fibers of an impact screen. I wrote the following in a private message to another user. Although, this is related to the modern graphics and textures of TGC2019.

I had calculated the relative resolution of the projected image, at least if your focus area were equivalent to a 55" screen within the impact screen. It would be similar to viewing a 55" monitor with 309 lines resolution when the projector is displaying 1080p. At least with 2160p, it translates to 618 lines, about dvd quality.
2160p matters because we are looking at a very particular target on a large screen from a relatively short distance.
Fun with math.
14' wide screen is 168" wide x 94.5" tall.
55" TV is 48" wide x 27" tall
27"/94.5" = 0.286
0.286 * 1080 =309
or
1080/94.5" = 11.43 pixels per inch
11.43*27" =309

2160p is about DVD quality within the area of focus (a 55" TV screen area from 10') and all of those distant details are resolved quite a bit better. Where do you look on the screen during your address? You look at your target. It is a small area of the screen and the details surrounding it are not limited by the fabric, at least Par2Pro's SQ screen. Also, don't skimp on the brightness. 5000+ lumens unless you are completely light controlled.Last edited by Will; 06-27-2020, 09:03 PM.
