  • Upgrade to GCQ or add HMT?

    Hello,

I have had a GC2 for close to 4 years now. It got a lot of use through the winter when I first got it, then I moved to a new house and it has seen some use in the summer here and there. Now I finally am getting to the end stages of my golf sim room, and am getting a ton of use out of it again. Right now my focus is on improving my game, and 99% of my use has been on the FSX range. I'd really like to have club head data, and am considering the differences between upgrading to GCQ or adding HMT.

From what I can tell, the logical decision is to add HMT. I'm looking at like $3500-$4500 used, vs about $10,000 to upgrade ($11,000 GCQ plus $4000 for clubhead add on minus $5000 ish to sell my GC2, I already have FSX 2020 so I think they wouldn't require me to buy that?) From what I read, the accuracy difference is negligible (twice as accurate but the GC2 is so accurate anyway that the difference isn't noticeable, right?)

That said, the GCQ is still in consideration. I understand it has less misreads, which is really nice. I hit about eight 56 degree wedge shots in a row yesterday that didn't register, and that can be particularly frustrating when playing a sim round. The larger hitting area would be nice also, as I assume that it would be large enough that I could set it up so that it would read the fixed tee, an iron shot, and a putting strip all at once? The alignment stick feature would be nice also.

Any other benefits I'm missing? Anyone make the jump that wouldn't mind sharing their thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Bob

I recently upgraded from the GC2 + HMT to a quad and have been beyond happy! I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you have the funds I would get the quad. I don't think there has been a single person that regretted upgrading. Twice as accurate is twice as accurate. The aim stick feature is beyond nice.

mmlincon ...reflective stick has to be one of my single favourite features, that and the convenience of a nice backlit screen with all data

Hubbahub gave me good advice on the GCQ. But...if you think that you won't get misreads with the GCQ...I hate to disappoint but I will. The issue you ran into about wedge shots not being picked up also occur on the GCQ. They weren't full shots and more chip shots with my wedge but I had a hell of a time getting them to register unless I moved around the ball to the center of the hitting zone. I haven't really figured all the possible 'edges' where shots come up 100% of the time. But...it's way better.

My GCQ though needs to be moved around. My SIM setup is in my garage and it gets hot where I am. I don't have AC in the garage and for the fear of someone walking out with the GCQ in case the garage is left open, I always bring it back inside every time I am done playing.

Knowing all this, would I still get the GCQ vs GC2/HMT? YES! The alignment stick is amazing. The portability is awesome. The resale value is very good too.

What is the resale value from private individual? I know it's 11k new and 9.9k refurbed from foresight. 4k club etc..

Not disagreeing with you, but as a counter experience, I get zero wedge misreads. Flops, chips, bunkers..all good.

I've seen 14k including fsx2020 a few courses with club data.

Are people now playing TGC2019 with the GCQ successfully and consistently? If so, i was thinking of upgrading to it perhaps? I just love the CG2 and HMT but i have a hole in my pocket.
I just need to talk and see people playing the TGC2019 with it consistently, then i would like to upgrade to it.

I’m playing with it almost nightly. Love it. Feel free to message me with any questions.

If you have the funds for the Quad I am certain you will not regret the purchase. It's a great unit.

I am not sure about the misreads issue. I see exceedingly few ball misreads -- basically never. Sometimes it does not catch 4-dot club data (usually means one or more of the fiducials needs to be replaced) but that of course does not affect sim play.

Alignment stick is also great. You can align the unit to tenths of a degree. In fact I hardly understand how one plays sim golf without this feature. Particularly if you want to putt with it.

I agree. I don’t see any misreads and no reads. The only no reads I get are when playing TGC. Maybe once a round I will have to hit a putt 2-3 times. Usually only happens once and it’s only ever while putting.

I second the alignment stick! Game changer. No guessing involved for those of us who take it in and out every use.

Hubbahub32 ...I get the putting issue too on TGC, my solution is to initialise the ball with my foot and putt from as far right/across as possible.

I'm pretty close to talking myself into it... just gotta convince myself...

Create whatever logic to make you rationalize your decision. That's how I ended up with the GCQ. "Sell my Skytrak for X profit, sell this and that...Hmm...still short many thousands. Well if I play Z many rounds of golf on the SIM, over a 5 year period, I will have paid for the GCQ itself".

Don't think of it like buying a car. Think of it as both an investment in yourself, happiness and love of the game. If you keep the GCQ for say 10 years, isn't $1800 per year worth it? PLUS, YOLO!

Well, I talked myself into it. I bought Soupy's unit. Thanks everyone!

I had GC2+HMT and still upgraded to Quad. I saw two key features with Quad that made me upgrade.

1 - I bring the Foresight out on the actual golf course often. It is WAY easier to drop the Quad down on the course (all in one device) and take a quick shot vs. GC2+HMT that has an awkward magnetic design and link cable.

2 - I wanted to upgrade to FSX from the FR1 software to get swing cam integration. As most used Quads came with an FSX license, i didn't want to drop separate money to just get FSX.

Ended up picking up a Quad with club AND putting for $13,000 from a seller on here and sold my GC2+HMT for about $8500. Difference was worth the upgrade to Quad+FSX.

I didn’t know TGC now works with the quad, that makes the quad interesting.
Are there any training programs for the putter on the quad?

You can do the PEAK training on the foresight website. Level one is free but you would have to pay for level 2. It goes through the club analysis data and what it means. Gives suggestions on fixes as well. I found it very informative.

            • #13
GCQuad has a highly sophisticated putting analysis function. I think some specialist putting studios can do more, but it's good. The problem is, few people (myself included) have the knowledge to take advantage of it. I would be really interested in any guidance on that.

For $2500 add on it gives you the all the numbers include angle of attack, club path etc and all the other numbers which is great, is there any skill based software that comes with it?

you use the fsx club data for analysis but then you have to know what to do with that data
