GC2 - Low Spin/Carry Distance

Just wanted to post an update to see if anyone has any insight as to what's going on with my swing or equipment. I received my CPO GC2 but I am still getting low spin numbers - I don't blame the unit and believe its likely picking up accurate data. If it is in fact the units, the only thing that I could think of is that it doesn't like the tilt of the garage floor (though it is sitting on a fibrebuilt mat, the back of the unit would be lower than the front by a slight amount). I am playing a Prov1, warm ball from inside the house, and playing with Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal Pros on KBS Tour 90 Stiff shafts. I was not fitted for these and bought these clubs second hand but they were practically new when I bought them earlier this season. If it means anything, I am a young fit male and believe I have good swing speed but not sure of any specific data on this.

Any advice you guys may have is appreciated!

You're launching it at 13degrees. That's INCREDIBLY low for your speed. Hard to create spin, with that amount of speed, when your presenting such little loft.

Simplest thing to do is take it to the range to eliminate indoor swing. What mat are you using?

Check impact location make sure it’s not high on the face. A fat shot on fiberbuilt will hit high on the face and lose ball speed, distance and spin. Generally a out 20 yards.

You can also try to hit just a couple shots off the stance area and see if it reads higher numbers there and you may be able to tell a little easier if you’re hitting it fat.

OK so I tested it off the performance mat with high hopes. Here are my findings:

I would suggest if you have access to another launch monitor like TM4 or GCQuad do a comparison.

I know with COVID it may not fly.... You can try and give your local GolfTown manager a shout and see if they will allow you to come in with your GC2 to hit a few balls to compare with their GC Hawk (provided they have GC Hawk). Or do a comparison with their GC2. Buy a box of balls or glove so you don’t seem like wasting their time (or see if you can book the their simulator for an hour, used to be able to pre-COVID)

another idea, if you have another set or clubs or can borrow from someone to test...

Good point newer irons are designed to spin lower. I still suspect indoor swing is the lower carry number

Bro, swing doesn't have enough SPEED at that LOFT to create more than 4k spin...

I can recreate your same spin numbers with a 7iron if I took a chip swing.

Well then, bro, something isn't measuring right because I am swinging at my full speed which is quick. I am not taking dainty shots.

You need speed loft and friction create spin. 100mph ballspeed with 16la is not going to get 7K spin. This is physics you are trying to fight.

I usually carry my 7iron 180, ~125ballspeed, launch at ~18 degrees, and spin between 5-6K. I have another 7 iron that I get ~120 ballspeed, ~19 launch, 165 carry and 6500-7500 spin.

Spin is gonna depend on the equipement(ball/club), how fast you swing it, how much loft and attack angle you present at impact.

The only think you should do if u want to carry your 7 iron farther, is swing it faster. It's not the GC2, its your swing.

If you really see different results outside(most people vastly overestimate their carry outdoors), then you probably are suffering from indoor swing syndrome. As tons of people mentioned on this forum.

Unfortunately, your only option now is to take the GC2 outdoors and validate what you. "Feel" and "real" are two different things. It's surprising if two GC2 in a row are producing data that doesn't align with your expectations. What's your driver clubhead speed?

Never been able to measure club head speed and can't swing driver in my sim setup in the garage due to a deck. I will take it to the range this weekend and try things out!

Sounds like a plan. Another question, what's the longest club you feel comfortable swinging in the garage? I'm trying to gauge whether indoor golf swing syndrome is a thing here if you have limited space to swing a club.

The specs on those irons are a full club lower (stronger) than standard lofts. The 7 iron is 30 degrees, they are designed to get the ball up and have little spin. I have the 919 tours and my 6 iron is also 30 degrees (7 iron 34). If you are fairly new to the game you will gain speed as you improve. Based on ball speeds you may consider switching to a higher spin ball (prov1 and prov1x actually swapped spin profiles a year or 2 ago). May consider regular shafts for now as well if you generate 100-105 ball speeds with a 7 (it's really a 6) iron.

Certainly could be indoor swing syndrome especially in a tight setup. my driver always seems a little shy of real numbers but not by much and it's most likely ego.

I have some gapping numbers on different software. Spin, ball speeds, launch angle etc. These are hit with hard non premium balls. I spin the ball too much and dont have as much speed as jacked up above.

Edit. Numbers are fuzzy but shows my 8 iron (close to your 9 iron loft) ball speed of 116 carrying 160.

Have you asked a friend who is also a golfer to try and hit a few balls and see what numbers they get? So many variables to guess what it is. As suggested, go to your local golf shop, take your 7 iron and compare it to another 7 iron from a fitting cart. Use your club as the base line club and see if you numbers generate the 5500+ spin you are looking for. Can you flip around the direction of to where you are hitting? Sounds like you have a downslope in your garage. as majority of the floors drain away from the house, I had to build up my floor to get the mat and GC2 level. take you GC2 outside to a foot ball field or something and bang a few balls and see if you get different numbers. I tend to believe it is your swing & club set up. This has become a very interesting who dun it thread!

I got my GC2 back in August from Foresight (Christmas in July deal) and I have the same exact problem. Distances are so far off it’s a joke. It’s not indoor swing, it’s not on a tilt, it’s not that I need to swing harder, the thing is just wrong. I hit my 7i 160 carry on the low end, and on my GC2 of the 500+ shots I’m guessing I’ve hit with a 7i, I’ve not once cracked 160 carry usually it’s anywhere from 135 to 145. Even if I’m wrong on my distances, I’m not that wrong.

I have some friends who are scratch golfers who used it as well, same results. Let me know what you find out.

Have you factored in elevation? Depending on where you live it could make a carry distance difference of 7 or 8%. Also, mat could also cause there to be a difference? Have your tried different mats?

Where I live is between 500-1,000 feet elevation - so it could be taking it down a little, but not to the degree it looks to be off. My turf is also pretty standard - Wittek Quattro (https://www.wittekgolf.com/Quattro-Mat). I'll test off of some carpet and a few other surfaces and see if that's the culprit, but either way, somewhere in there you'd think I'd break 160.... Thanks for the thoughts!

have you taken it outdoors to a range to confirm? Laser a target at 150 and hit a couple shots with balls you don’t mind donating to a range, you’ll be able to tell quickly if there is an issue with other the gc2

Yes, I have definitely done this and it's clearly short. I'll likely give foresight a call after I check out if it's possibly the surface I am hitting off of (from Dax's comment above) - I'm hoping it's not calibrated wrong...
