FSX 2020 stuttering graphics in 4k- help requested

Alright, so I took the plunge and invested a pile of money into building what is in my opinion, one of the nicest home simulator builds money can buy. Sunday, I had the first foursome round since building it, my normal IRL Sunday group coming over to play inside golf as the outside temps in Maine are plummeting and the remaining days are numbered. What I ran into was a disappointing issue where progressively the graphics performance of FSX 2020 slowed more and more as the round went on, to the point where conservatively I'd estimate that the shot animation took 3-4 times as long to play out, and the round took close to 6 hours, with "fast putt" turned on.

Major note- this was a "no expense spared" build. So, my PC absolutely positively should not be the bottleneck running FSX 2020's 1990's texture graphics, even in 4k. It should be noted- running the game in 1080p would run smooth as butter, but full screen 4k mode progressively slowed down as play went on. My setup:

    QCQ launch monitor
BenQ LK 953ST native 4K/60hz projector
Enclosure is a Carls Pro with Carl's Premium impact screen (obviously no impact on the graphics quality, but I wanted to paint the mental picture a bit.)
PC: custom build, no expenses bared best of the best circa late 2019 PC:
Intel i9-9900K processor, stable overclock locked in at 5.0 GHZ, all 8 cores. Stable overclock achieved via Asus Z390 motherboard and Corsair liquid cooler, full ATX case with three full size ventilation fans
ASUS ROG Strix 2080 TI OC graphics card- this is the binned (hand selected out of a batch of silicon chips for top overclocking performance) factory overclock model running a stable overclock
    32 GB DDR4 3200 MHZ memory
    Windows 10 pro
    Corsair HX850I power supply
    Samsun 970 EVO SSD

Long and the short- this can play any 2020 AAA title maxed out and look smooth doing it. Yet it struggles with FSX 2020 at 4k.

Hoping for some help from those who know more than me about this type of thing!

    Thanks,

    Bob

This is a tough one. Were you running another monitor and was it displaying something different? Could it be that the refresh rates were set differently between the two monitors? Sorry, but I Reaching for straws on this one.

I am not an expert by no means and will probably not help much...but here are few things to check:
      1) Do you have a high-speed HDMI connection to your projector? (i.e., 8K fiber optic HDMI cable) (Not sure if this will matter since the stuttering is on your computer) Or, do you have 4K capable Displayport cable connected to your projector?
      2) I read if you turn off anti-aliasing for 4K, it might run better (and it is not needed). The "expert" online said: "at such a high resolution, at best use smaa or fxaa."
      3) Sorry, I have to ask...but, did you go into your GPU card settings and set them up so FSX uses your 2080Ti at the highest quality settings?
      4) I also read: "Keep Vsync OFF do not use it... also using any GSYNC etc adds input lag which imo makes games feel horrible... If your FPS is higher than your monitor refresh rate which i'm assuming is 60hz you shouldn't experience any stuttering or tearing."

Let me know how you get this resolved as I have a high-end gaming pc arriving in Nov with a 3080 card and will probably run into the same issue. For now, FSX runs smoothly in 1080p on my simple Dell gaming laptop.

The fact that this gets worse over time suggests a memory leak. You should check task manager next time to see what is going on. I too am starting to have players over as the weather is going south. I played with 3 last week and didn't notice any issues and I'm running 2 gigE cameras with it. The projector cable is important, make sure you are getting 60Hz at the projector but that should have any affect over time. My computer specs are a bit below yours so you should be fine there.

You could also try switching FSX to balanced or performance for the graphics settings to see what happens. Also, try a different camera view. No way 4 guys should take 6 hours. That's way too long!! Can we play through?

Yes, running a second monitor. FSX running only on the projector though. The second monitor only had a browser window open playing Pandora.

Can’t see that being the cause of the issue.

1- Yes, I have a Riupro active fiber cable, pretty pricy and one of the top reviewed cables I could buy. I was having issues getting 4k/60 and this solved them. It isn't the cable, TGC2019 runs smooth as butter in 4k.

        2- I could try.

        3- Yes.

        4. I'll try that also.

        Thanks for the input.

That's what I was thinking. I did try lowering the quality, it didn't make a difference. Yes, I'll wave you through next time, I'd hate to be stuck behind us at that rate!

I am wondering of your power supply is undersized for what you are drawing. the HX850i is a great unit but you are pulling between 500 and 550 Watts without any overclocking - not accounting for fans, peripherals etc....Overclocking both CPU and graphics card will add to the power draw......might be worth ruling out something simple .......

Highly doubt it, 300W is a LOT of headroom. And this is specific to FSX.

Possibly not but the problem is your overclock - expect 50-60 watts for a CPU overclock - the 1080Ti pulls almost 250 watts underload factory, and as much as 400 Watts depending on your overclock. Add 15-20 watts for your three fans and I bet you are closer than you think depending on what USB or other peripherals are pulling power as well. Anyway - just a thought ..... my two cents

could it have anything to do with possibly over shifting the projector image????

              Just spitballing ....

Your bio says that you also have tgc2019. Do you encounter the same issue when running that?

And if you have tgc, why not run that?

No, the way I understand lens shift, it is all optical via lenses. What is happening is at the software level- the ball literally takes much longer to fly.

No issues with TGC2019, though this week will be the first run of a full group of 4 for a full round. I ran FSX last week because I do actually like it.

As somebody mentioned run task manager as the starting point and see what’s happening over time, check CPU usage and memory carefully.how is the Quad connected to the PC? If it is not via direct Ethernet try that, it could be the data from the Quad to the PC is slowing down by say a bad WiFi signal? Maybe somebody here knows the sequence of data transfer ? For example does the software only start the ball flight once it has all the data or does it do it on the fly so to speak? I assume on the fly because at least the initial strike seems to have no lag where ball leaves the club? I am spitballing here but maybe could weigh in?

i have a similar setup though run dual Xeon processors with an Nvidia P4000 And an insane amount of ram and don’t seem to have the issues you are having.

                      good luck

I gotta agree with bm11 I wasn't familiar with the PSU model but after looking, the 850 watts is a tremendous amount of power availability. I agree it's unlikely the PSU is the issue
