  • Computer and Projector Options / Suggestions

In the final stages of completing my sim. I have the GCQuad and FSX 2020. I am looking for some suggestions on projectors and computer set-ups. My screen is 13.5 x 9 and I will be mounting the projector in the ceiling and there is lots of height there. Room depth is about 17.5'. I will also be using the area for teaching fitness classes so I was thinking a projector with a short throw (not super short). With the size of the screen I think I pretty much have to go 4k which is fine but trying to decide if laser is worth it. On the computer end I am curious if the specs they provide are enough or if anyone has some suggestions on some do's and don'ts. Here is a picture from a couple weeks ago. Completed a few more things since then, but gives you a bit of an idea where I am at.

If your pockets are deep enough a 4K Laser would be amazing though search for a read opinions on the merits of 4K for a Sim - impact screens and projection screens produce differing quality of images - many are not quite sold on the cost benefit. For most mere mortals though I would recommend either 4K or Laser (and for me I went with Laser - higher Lumens and no degradation over time with crazy long bulb life expectations). That said, if you can control the ambient lighting easily, you can get a really affordable 4K projector (bulb) such as BenQ TK850 for around $1500. For comparison, the Cheapest BenQ 4K Laser ST is about 4 times that amount right now. As with most options - really depends on where you want to spend your cash and what is most important.

Lastly, projector is one of the easier components to upgrade over time when street prices come down a bit. My two cents,

Thanks jasonreg, much appreciated. I think I am going to go with the 4K and look at the Laser down the road, unless I get a deal I can’t refuse. All the best.

Yes, laser is worth it, ESPECIALLY with that window in your garage door. I'd say don't waste money on 4k vs laser. Laser first, 4k second. I'm on my second projector and wish I'd spent the money the first time. HUGE difference.

Figure out the geometry of how high is your ceiling (minus projector hang), how tall you are, how far from the screen you stand. You want a short enough throw that you don't have shadow issues.

Also, this is not what you are asking, and it sounds like you want to keep the space uncluttered -- but I think you are going to want some more netting protection around your screen, both sides and top. It looks great now but watch out if you ever hit a shank. Even if you don't, wedges will bounce upward off the screen and you will be ducking for cover from balls hammering down off the ceiling.

I had my screen like that when I first got a sim. Wasn't about the bounce back but more about hitting a high wedge. AMAZING how a golf ball will go RIGHT THROUGH SHEETROCK! Will go through plywood too if hit hard.

All comments welcome. I plan to have the sides all covered either by some type of padding, curtain, etc. Just have not figured out what direction I want to go. Also there will be something covering the bulkhead I we have built (netting or padding) but still figuring out the logistics of that as my garage door will need to be able to encroach in that area by about 3'. I have purchased a computer and 4k projector and will up date with some pictures and specs later this weekend when I have tested them out. Fingers crossed.
