  • GC2 New Build Confusion

    Hi guys,
I've been trying to read all of these forums and the Ottawa forums trying to get as smart as I can. I also spent 90 minutes on the phone with foresight trying to get smart on the GC2. The more I've learned the less I know!
I would love to get some guidance on some key topics, as I am in the middle of a build out in my basement that includes a large simulator room, 15x24 allocated in the space.
Flooring: I would like to have the entire area in turf, and I can find several sources of 15' wide product but would like recommendations. I'm stuck deciding if I should build the whole floor up by 3" or more to allow the addition of any floor sensors or even if I should allow for the hitting mat to be recessed to have a constant finished carpet height across the whole room?
When I see the hitting mats that include fairway, sand trap and rough, I think they are appealing, but with GC2 it seems like they are not an option. I was even thinking about an automated mechanism that put the GC2 on rails that moved it to stay aligned with the proper hitting area, but it seems like overkill. Any thoughts? This was something that had me thinking GSA was the good answer but after reading all the challenges, that may be a bridge too far. I had been thinking PX5.
But I came back to GC2, and I like the looks of the tee marker version, even if I can't take it outside. Any concerns with it?
Then I get to projectors. I really want 1080p at a minimum, and it seems like the Optima XT1080 is the only real option for a short throw. I didn't like the idea of a projector behind me because I can't get it high enough to prevent shadows. I would have loved a 4K until I saw the prices! When I talked to Foresight, they said their minimum lumens output is 4000, but most that I can find in short throw seem to max out at 2800 or 3000. I wanted to know what you guys are using?
The next big thing that has me very concerned comes from my conversation with Justin at foresight. He indicated that the ability to run non foresight sanctioned software with a GC2 was only a firmware change away from being stopped. It seems so clear that TGC is the right answer, but it scared me that I could be locked out if I get a gc2? Then I think I saw a protee rep say within the last week that they won't provide TGC a without a hardware purchase, but is it right that that would not include GC2 in the future? HELP!
Thanks for all of the great forums, and in advance for advice. I will take a photo record of my buildout and post it here over the coming couple months.

-you don't need floor sensors with a gc2
-white turf and long turf ain't rough or sand so why bother?
-gc2 on rails is a waste of time imho
-GSX...if you are confused with gc2, run from gsx
-I have the benq 1080st. I love it
-if firmware can stop non sanctioned software, from working, then don't change firmware. Seems simple.

    Good luck my friend.

I'm in your same situation, starting to build out my room. I liked GC2's hardware and when paired with the Protee software which includes TGC you have a really good combination of hardware & software. Unfortunately, Protee just shut the door on non-Protee hardware buyers from buying just the software. They plan to support all previous Protee software buyers with ongoing support. GC2 is a launch monitor that sits to the side of your hitting area (similar to Skytrak). This gives you lots of flexibility on hitting mats and they do not have the sensors in the mat like other systems (Protee, Trugolf, etc.).

      Hope this helps...

One other thing to consider, Custom Golf Design sells a mat with multiple surfaces (fairway, rough, sand, etc.) and a sliding tray that sits next to it easily move a GC2 or Skytrak to the proper surface for your next shot. I've seen it in action and it's pretty neat. Check out their web site...

Thanks for quick replies. The reason for considering building on a platform is only if gc2 becomes an issue if TGC is where it's at, and I have to switch to something else, that does have mat sensors, at least I will be elevated to accommodate sensors. I'm scared about buying gc2 now due to no TGC and a ver expensive course cost. Am I off track with my newfound gc2 concerns?

            Not off track.

Protee is positioning themselves to have the only launch monitor (speculation) with TGC compatibility. Great for them, but not good for non-Protee users. But that's busniness.

Foresights business model is to offer their proprietary software with the expensive course fee. They're relying on their brand reputation to keep new customers coming in, but all it takes is someone to come out with a cheaper launch monitor that performs similarly to kill them.

The environment is changing fast now it seems, so these decisions are tougher than they used to be.

Maybe it's best to build your room and buy the hardware when that's done.

Have a look at my build thread... http://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum/...lator-build-uk
I've been going through some of the issues you mention over the last few months, and am now finally approaching a usable system!
There's still a few things to finalize, but I'm getting there.

Thankfully I bought my ProTee / TGC last month - otherwise I'd be gutted that they've changed their selling rules. I bought the GC2 especially for TGC!

I guess what I don't understand is why protee stopped selling the software when they don't seem to have a launch monitor to compete. You are forced into an in floor system. As an aside, I find all those pictures of a smiling little boy holding a golf stick behind his back as a little creepy... They should rethink their marketing strategy! I should take this question to another forum, but does anyone actually like the in floor systems from protee?

I think I am going to buy the optoma 1080 projector, for 750 from Amazon.

Is the common wisdom to just set the hitting mats on top of the wall to wall turf carpet versus cutting a hole in the turf for the mat to sit in? And forget the idea of a constant flooring height?

When I look at the protee software, it makes no mention of TGC, so how do you know what you are getting?
What do you think about the idea of buying the cheapest mat sensor from them to get the software and just sell the sensor on eBay? Then use the GC2 purchased elsewhere?

I would think that may work...? But then I don't know if the software is paired with the serial of your sensor mat, therefore making it useless to the 2nd hand owner. I don't know though.

Dennis (Protee) visits the forums somewhat regularly, so if that's a loop hole that would work, I would think it would be closed soon enough! Whoops!

The cheapest sensor/software combo is $3,353; and the software alone costs only $1,995. How exactly would buying the combo and selling the mat save you money? No one in their right mind would buy a useless mat for over $1,400.

If protee is no longer willing to sell the software standalone, then I am comparing the foresight software cost with software plus hardware at protee. So many people are on TGC, and the foresight costs for courses is so high that buying the protee hardware and getting part of it back on eBay may still be cheaper. GC2 courses are that expensive.

Cheapest sensor mat with TGC is the Personal Pro for $2300 but I think mthunt said it best.

The build is underway, but not knowing the sensor drives indecision on whether I build a platform on top of the concrete or not. Zmax, your enthusiasm for TGC is catching and what makes me want that more than the foresight simulator. Everyone seems big on GC2 also so that has been my focus. I'll be ordering screen, projector and turf this week, was taking anyone's guidance on those three components.
