  • FSX Play REAL GPU requirements not recommended

I wanted to ask kindly for some feedback from users who have activated FSX Play on which Nvidia GPU would run flawlessly in a full mode with no stutter. I'm going to upgrade from my GTX 1070Ti PC this year and wondered if an RTX 3060 would be enough to future-proof myself or should I go to the RTX 3090 and just be done with it. Thanks in advance for any advice

You will be fine. The cpu doesn't carry much load. I have 32 gb ram, system uses about 16 under most loads. I bought the PNY, it works great. Just read reviews on the card. Make sure it doesn't have high failure rate or overheating problems.

siebo - Hey did you ever pull the trigger on the 4070ti? if so which one and how are you finding it? As the courses close up here in Ontario, I have been updating and trying to decide whether to upgrade my GPU or to get a whole new Computer. A GPU upgrade required a PSU upgrade.....you know how it goes.

Also for the wider group, any thoughts on amount of GPU VRAM required? I am asking as when I look at my current 2080 Super, it seems to be maxed out on it VRAM 7.4GB or whatever, where as the GPU seems to be sitting at 80-85%. RAM is using only 30% of the available 32 and the CPU is barely breaking a sweat. So, while the clock speed of the GPU and the available frame-rates are no doubt key, I am wondering how important the amount of GPU RAM/VRAM is on the whole equation. Thoughts?

Yes, I brought the PNY. Honestly, still having some of the same issues with the flickering, maybe not as much. I can run any course in 4K medium setting, most in high and none in ultra setting. I did decide to go to GSPro because of all the issues still in FSX Play. So far, I’m very satisfied with it. I can run in 4K ultra will no difficulties. I’ve had zero issues with it. I do like some of the graphics in FSX Play a little better but that will depend on the course being played. For example, I have Cabot Cliffs in both programs and like it better in GSPro.

Yeah, pay attention to the date of release on the GS Pro courses. Most courses released in the past 6+ months have been using the latest version of the course building software and the results are amazing. Enjoy.

3070ti runs great. I also think what a lot of people are overlooking is cooling. I custom build all my PC's, my dedicated rig for the sim has 9 fans in total. These cards get real hot when under stress.

I agree completely - proper cooling is essential. When you say the 3070ti runs well - is this with the latest version of play? If so, what level of graphics are you using (Low, Med, High or Ultra) and which courses do you play? What I have noticed is it is very course specific. I have started to track which courses are an issue so I can update by tech service request, but as an example, I can play the new Tropical Paradise Executive, Harbour Town and La Jolla on High, but Pebble on Med max and Pitch & Putt I need to be on Low to avoid all stuttering.

      ForesightMattyG - any insight here?

jasonreg - There are a few factors that can contribute to courses running slowly:

        1. Optimization: Are you running the most up-to-date version of the course. You can download from https://www.foresightsports.com/supp...tware/fsx-play

        2. Hardware Capability. The Video card has a powerful GPU which will impact the course performance. Then comes the Memory on the computer, do you have 1 memory stick or 2? 2 sticks allows for better bandwidth and is recommended for higher end computer solutions. After this would be CPU as an i5 or i7, or i9.

        3. Then Heat also plays a strong role with any electronic performance. If the device is being cooled correctly you will see proper performance. If it is stuck inside a cabinet, then the heat most likely will begin to slow performance of the PC.

        4. Since the course is downloaded to the PC, the internet connection doesn't have a direct impact on course performance.

Run on high i don't see any issues that are noticeable to me. I have 8gb ram on the card and 64gb of ram in the system. i wonder if people are having issues with PC to quad connection? I use direct ethernet connection maybe that's a factor also?

This comment from foresight sports I think misses the point:
          • 4. Since the course is downloaded to the PC, the internet connection doesn't have a direct impact on course performance.
            • Flag
Its not about the internet connection. The first step in displaying the shot is the data capture from the quad, that's my point about a direct ethernet connection. If the quad is sending the data via wifi it might be causing data drops ? Just an idea.

ForesightMattyG - thanks for the response. To your Points:
          1. Optimization: Are you running the most up-to-date version of the course. Yes - all courses are updated. All windows updates and GPU Driver updates are done.

          2. Hardware Capability. I am running an RTX2080 Super with 32GB DDR4 2666MHz (2 x 16GB), 9th Gen Intel i9-9900K CPU - Not the most modern but not a Dog .....

          3. Then Heat also plays a strong role with electronic performance. No Heat issues. 2 extra case fans, CPU is liquid cooled. 3 Fans on GPU. CPU is on a bench open to ambient air.

          4. Since the course is downloaded to the PC, the internet connection doesn't have a direct impact on course performance. OK

PittsburghRed - thanks for the update. Yes, I connect via USB so like you, this should not be an issue.

          WRT some updated data:
          • I am getting 56-60 FPS on Ultra in GSP Pro. No issues whatsoever.
          • I get 2 (yes 2) FPS on Pitch & Putt on Ultra in FSX Play and 8-10 FPS on High. Unplayable
          • I get 18-20 FPS on Pitch & Putt on Med in FSX Play. Playable but noticeable stuttering
          • I get 22-23 FPS on Pitch & Putt on Low in FSX Play. Playable but minor stuttering
Will test out a few other courses later.

jasonreg - This all looks good outside of the Video Card. It appears to be a older generation from the software min specs:

Video Card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 or greater

recommended for Quality/Optimal Performance: GeForce RTX 3070ti/3080/3090
not supported: Nvidia Quadro, AMD GPU

This copied from the downloads page for FSX PLAY: https://support.foresightsports.com/...ftware-release

The Video Card will account for the performance issues you have with rendering some of the more graphics intensive courses, this is most impacted by tress, grass, and water assets within the course build itself.

jasonreg - I am looking at the differences from these two cards and them seem pretty minimal. I would recommend sending a logfile on a support ticket to have this investigated further:

here is the comparison between the two cards: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compar...per/4090vs4050

ForesightMattyG - yes, this has been my struggle all along. The base performance of the two cards are very close. This was what led me to question whether the amount of VRAM might be coming into play with the way the courses are coded. Folks with xx60/70/60ti/70ti are seeing stuttering, while folks with xx80/90 cards less so. Generally the latter cards have 16 or even 24GB of DDR6 vs the 8 to 12GB for the lower cards. Dunno - shot in the dark.

          Jason on this point:

"thanks for the update. Yes, I connect via USB so like you, this should not be an issue."

A USB connection is not the same as ethernet. In fact USB hub root issues can have a profound impact on data transfer. I have a swing catalyst setup as well and the two cameras for example will not play well on the same USB hub I have to ensure they are separate,

Can you try a direct Ethernet connection?

Please let us know your USB configuration, card, board etc..? Also let us know what other USB devices you have attached. I think it might be data transfer issues.

I just finished upgrading my sim to 4k (projector, new PC). I have a brand new Lenovo Legion desktop (arrived yesterday so it's the latest and greatest) with 32g RAM and 4080 graphics card. I tested the FPS on FSX Play today on High and Ultra settings. My results showed in 4k I could get 50+ FPS on High but only ~20FPS on Ultra using Pebble Beach as the test course. the software and courses are all up to date. the GCQ is connected to the computer via CAT6. Heat is not an issue on the PC given cooling system.

the Ultra setting also didn't have super smooth graphics in the hole flyover either. it was decent but not what I would have expected given the PC I have to run it. High graphics setting looks very good and runs smooth. so it makes we wonder what is Ultra any good for?

If this machine can't run Ultra on FSX Play, I can't imagine what machine could?

GSPro on Ultra setting in 4k looks great and runs very smooth. I didn't check the FPS on that yet but will over the next few days.

has anyone got Ultra graphics setting on FSX Play to work well? if so, which courses and what FPS could you attain?

If you have a chance, and if you have the courses, I have found that I can get "playable" conditions on High graphics settings on the following courses:
                • Tropical Paradise Executive
                • Harbour Town and
                • Pebble Beach
I have not tried them all, but have started making a list to assist trouble shooting.

NVidia GeForce Experience does not seem to record FPS on Play for whatever reason. What are you using to verify FPS if you don't mind me asking?

I used GeForce experience to capture frame rates on FSX Play. However, I am not able to capture FPS using GeForce Experience when I am using GSPro. not sure how others are doing that.

Just to clarify, my courses run well using High graphics settings. it's only when I use Ultra graphics that they dont run as smooth and FPS drops to ~20. so I will just use High setting. but I would like to know what is the purpose/point of Ultra setting if no machine can effectively run this smoothly.

yeah, I had to use Windows Game Bar (Windows Key + G) to get the FPS for GS Pro. I could not get the FPS with GF Experience either for whatever reason.

^^^ do you have any intermittent black flickers when you play ?
I'm at 4K and get it occasionally, and also seems course dependent. Could be my combo of GPU & projector & cable & cable length. I might order another HDMI cable and see if that tames it, not that the flickering is bad, just randomly intermittent at 4K.

I have a 4080 running at 4K and Ultra is hit & miss, and is course dependent. I just keep it on High. I really don't know what Ultra would visually give me as I've gone back and forth a lot between Ultra/High and cannot discern any more detail or dimension. I don't have GS Pro yet but plan on it. Heck it's only golf, not a first person shooter with high realism, so I don't get how demanding the graphics requirements are with FSX Play -> something must be very inefficient in the coding.

No, I have not seen black flickers as you described. For me it is just stuttering and low (very low) FPS generation with some courses. My two first "Go-To" checks for what you might be describing are - delete and reload drivers, and verify PSU is (a) large enough for power draw of GPU and (b) working properly.

So I gave this a try. Connected my PC to internet via WIFI and used the ethernet to connect to GCQ. No change whatsoever. I too have multiple cameras on separate USB Hubs and have always connected the GCQ via USB without issue. In any case, no change.

I measured GSP Pro FPS at Ultra Graphics and dual monitors and I am getting 60FPS. It actually may be generating more but I limited the output to 60FPS to match my projector. The most I have seen even on Low Graphics on FSX Play is 28-30 FPS.
