What's your FSX Play graphics FPS?

Hey all -

Working on optimizing FSX Play graphics.
I have the Sim in a Box package, the HP computer has the GTX 1660 Ti card

I'm only getting about 45 FPS on low settings, wondering what others are getting?

My understanding is that 1660 Ti should perform well at 1080p which is what my projector is, so this is a little surprising.

I'll do some testing and report numbers back, but interested in others' experience.

CPU is i5 10th gen, not an issue running 20-30% utilization,

GPU 98-99%

System only has 8GB of RAM so need to investigate if that is a potential bottleneck as well instead of just the GPU.

More to come, hoping with 16GB RAM that I might be able to get enough performance for my 60Hz 1080p projector!

How do you see your FPS?

I have a new gaming laptop with the GTX 3070 card and it runs FSX 2020 1080P resolution smoothly at first but sometime after 8 holes, the frame rates drop to what feels like 1 FPS. When this happens, I save my game, exit FSX, then reload the saved game and it works fine, but an annoyance. I'd consider upgrading to FSX Play but am hesitant because FSX 2020 is less GPU hungry than FSX Play.

How’s it going with this? Your laptop should have no problems running FSX 2020 and if you’re doing 1080p FSX play should work. Your GPU is 30-40% more powerful than mine according to

Foresight website says recommended processor is I7 gen6.

My FSX2020 runs great with RTX2060 & I7 Gen 10 processors. I am hesitant for now with Play too, although my system does meet all of their requirements. I will eventually upgrade. I am happy with the Graphics on FSX2020 for now and its features are better.

I have 1660 Ti and i5 10th Gen.

FSX 2020 and Play are both GPU intensive. CPU utilization is crazy low. My 2020 and Play frame rates aren’t really too different.

You can download a trial of “FPS Counter” software, creates an overlay on the screen. MSI Afterburner is another, or if you have GeForce Experience installed, just hit Alt+R in-game.

In my case, my 1660 Ti was doing 50 FPS on low settings (“Full Performance”) at 1900x1200 (basically taller 1080p). I did the most recent update, and upgraded to 32GB ram and now I’m at 57-60 FPS. This is on La Jolla Pines hole #1. I get 70+ on the Paris driving range.

My projector has 60Hz refresh rate, so I’m in playable range on low settings. As long as FPS is higher than the refresh rate of the monitor/projector you’re doing OK. I only get this at the lowest graphics settings though.

On Balanced it’s 50FPS

Full Graphics it crashes down to about 10 FPS and is unplayable.

No matter what my GPU is at 98-99% utilization. CPU 20-35%. With 8GB ram Play was using 7.5 of 8 GB and once upgraded to 32GB it went up to 12 of 32 used so 16 GB should be sufficient but if you’re on 8GB I’d upgrade.

it’s kind of crazy because I downloaded Fortnite for comparison and I get over 100FPS on almost the highest settings. Makes me think there is some bloat in the design. 1660 Ti, 2060/2070 etc should have higher 1080p FPS I think.

I can safely upgrade to 3060 Ti in my current case/power supply. When I can get one around 400-450 I probably will.

I can’t imagine that 2060 or laptop 3070 can’t run decent frame rates at 1080p low or medium settings. Full Graphics/high settings seems very intensive.

I downloaded GeForce Experience. Thanks for the tip. My 2060 RTX, I7 Gen 10, laptop runs well (I think) with FSX 2020. My CPU, CPU usage (according to the app) never get very high? I'm not a computer guy. Can someone define "unplayable?" Or what is everyone looking at? How much the pin flag is blowing or trees moving etc? Or the actual play of the game - meaning slow response time, stuttering, etc.? I have an Optoma GT1090 HDR projector. I have a nice set up in my garage. I am not set up in simulator room with dark lighting, etc. My system plays great. No delays or anything.

To me playable is smooth graphics with no stutters or drops. The higher the resolution of your projector and the higher the settings in the app, the harder that is to do.

From FPS perspective, around 60 is generally pretty smooth, so if you can do that at medium or high settings, you’re pretty good. Your projector does have a 120Hz refresh rate, so you can get “smoother” response all the way up to 120FPS, as a 120Hz projector refreshes the image 120 times per second, so anything over 120 FPS is “wasted”.

I can play both FSX 2020 and FSX Play smoothly at 1080p low settings. Medium settings is still ok, but High (Full Graphics) chokes the GPU and doesn’t work well, like 20 FPS.

I’m waiting for a 3060Ti at MSRP as it’s the best card I can put in my current build and is a big upgrade for $400-$450. If I get a 4K projector one day it will need a much stouter PC likely 3080-3090 card or new 40 series later.

At the "Full Graphics" settings on FSX 2020 my FPS vary - depending on what is happening in the game. It looks fine to me, no stutters, etc. The highest FPS I see are 57-58. My GPU/CPU usage never seems to get above 50%. Is there anything I can do to increase performance? Or is that it, based on my 2060 RTX, I7 - laptop?

Also to add if you can play FSX 2020 at full graphics with those utilization numbers I would imagine you can run FSX Play.

Honestly are there any computers that can run FSXPLAY with Full Graphics on 4K projector? My laptop drops frames at anything except "Full Performance" And full performance is not very clear. Here's what I have with a laptop fan on full speed. I'd definitely buy something better if I could rest assured Id get full graphics on a 4K projector. Foresight should partner with someone and give us the list.
