  • GC2 erratic putter spin & more

Having a few issues with a used gc2 I just bought on ebay. Of course the seller won’t let me return, so I wanted to get opinions on what could be wrong…if the gc2 is actually faulty, or if it’s just really not liking something I’m doing. I had a setup issue at first (didn’t flip the lid latch underneath) that I thought was the problem, but more problems showed up after more use.

S/n is A1010. Guy said he bought cpo. I’ve put less than 150 shots on it and had it a day. I accept occasional misreads or no reads, but this is excessive. I thought it was mostly user error at first, but after exhaustive tinkering and a blown flash in just 30 shots, I’m worried it’s a hardware issue.

    1. I had issues with putts from the start. I get 1200-2000 backspin on a lot of putts, often see some as high as 12000 that roll 40’ backwards. Could be an 8 footer or a 30 footer, no rhyme or reason. I’ve eliminated so many variables - different putters, balls, heights of gc2, location of gc2, location of ball in hitting zone, surfaces, golfers, lighting, and even flashes. I’m exhausted with it and nothing seems to remedy long term. About 1 in 3 putts are read with lots of backspin. Once it starts really jacking putts up with the 12k spin, it can be nearly every putt.

    2. I get unrealistic spin numbers on other shots too, more intermittently, but consistently. Sometimes I’ll see 5000-7000 sidespin on all types of shots that seem well struck. Could be a 30yd pitch, iron shot, or driver. Most shots also leak right, even short chips that I physically see going left in my sim room. I’m known to slice the ball, but not that much. Even snap hooks register as a pull fade type shape. I’m pretty used to sim golf at this point, it definitely seems like a consistent misread. Seems to be an issue with erratic spin. Probably 1 in 10.

    3. I tried swapping to an included spare flash to rule that out, and it actually burnt out in about 30 shots (guy said it was new). I smelled burning plastic, and all of a sudden, my shots we no longer picking up (showing dashes), the flash stopped firing completely and has blown out. The gc2 still works with the other flash, but I’ve noticed an increase in the spin misreads or dashed no reads since then. The spare flash was an older type while the new flash was a larger super flash. This had me worried and no longer thinking it’s a setup issue.

    4. It can work fine for the first few mins, but the issues really pick up after about 30min-hour of continuous use. Once they start, they stay more consistent. Can be hard to replicate these issues after an initial startup when the gc2 has been sitting idle for a while. Restarting doesn’t do anything when they start happening, though.

    Any thoughts?

I would shoot a message to andygg1986, he does some repair on GC2's and also has his own flash that he sells. He has done work on mine and is very quick and responsive.

First thing to try is 1. disconnect the battery and charger for about 10 minutes. 2.reconnect the battery and charger and reload the GC2 firmware which is available on the Foresight web site and is version 4.0.0.15. This may not fix any component that is malfunctioning but it will ensure you start out with non corrupted EEPROM bits.

From your description it seems you have a problem with increasing internal temperature. This sometimes causes marginal EEPROM bit storage to read out incorrectly. Reloading the firmware will recharge the storage nodes on the chips.

Doing the above may not fix your problem but it is easy to do before trying more time consuming and expensive solutions like sending the unit out for repair.

The GC2 sounds defective. EBay has buyer protection. Open a case and get the return process started. EBay will step in even if the buyer doesn't accept returns. If you paid with PayPal you'll also have another level of buyer protection.

Thanks a ton for the insight, that all seems to make sense. The burning of the flash makes me think a hardware issue is present, but surely there's something off with the firmware as well since the putting was never right from the start.

All in all, the thing seems pretty jacked up. I know things can be fixed, and I'm happy to fix stuff...but I just forked over nearly $3k for a GC2 listed as "in pristine condition". Now chasing potential repairs, it bleeds into the cost saving factor which is why I went GC2 over a BLP/GC3. Didn't expect to have such major problems right away.

I went ahead and started that process, but it will take some time since the guy is fighting me hard on it. he's insisting I did something in the 48 hours I had it to break it somehow - ridiculous. with the value, it needs to be escalated to a special claims dept where they can determine if it's eligible for buyer protection. the guy on my case seems to think I'll be OK, but I need to wait a bit for the decision.

I really hope I don't get stuck with it, but if I do, I at least want to be prepared to know how I can potentially fix it so I can try to recoup some cash. Could be a while, so I caved today and just ordered a new BLP (thank god for affirm lol).

I finally got my sim room where I want it after 9 long months of tinkering (also sold my r10)...thought this was the best move for me. I can't stand to leave it unfinished while I deal with this for an unknown amount of time. My Home goal is to just focus on golf and get ready for the upcoming season. Before I know it, it'll be spring and my sim use will go down a lot. I need to put in some major work the next 2-3 months and hoped the GC2 was the final piece for at least another few years...I guess I just got unlucky...
